George Knox of Prehen, Co Londonderry son of Andrew Knox and Honoria Tomlins. He
married Jane Mahon circa 1760. Jane was the daughter of Thomas Mahon and Jane Crosbie
of Strokestown, Co Roscommon. She was the sister of Maurice Mahon, Lord Hartland and
they had at least six children (four sons and two daughters). George died at Rathmullen on
18 Jun 1787 survived by his wife and numerous children. Jane died at Strokestown
on 5 May 1823.
1 Andrew Knox, eldest son born circa 1766 succeeded to the family estates. He was a
Colonel of the Donegal Militia and a MP. He married Mary MacCausland by special
licence at Henry Street in June 1790. Mary was the eldest daughter of Dominick
MacCausland of Daisy Hill, Co Derry. Mary of Prehen died 20 Jun 1834 at Gortgowan,
Moville, the residence of her son in law. Andrew, a JP of Londonderry and Donegal
died at Brussels on 23 Aug 1840.
1 George Knox born circa 1793 was appointed a magistrate in 1841 and a JP of
Londonderry in 1842. He died on 24 Jun 1848 at Prehen House and was
interred in the family vault at Rathmullen.
2 Jane Knox eldest daughter married Captain Robert Sinclair Hay at the Cathedral
Church, Derry in January 1831. Robert was the son of Robert Hay of Chesterfield,
East Lothian. 10 Jun 1875 at Rutland Square, Edinburgh.
3 Andrew Knox third son married Katheron Cox on 24 Sep 1823 at Derby.
Katherine was the third daughter of John Cox of Derby.
4 Honoria Thomkins Knox married Rev Charles Galwey of Gortgowan, Moville at
Glendermot Church in April 1822.
5 Dominick Knox married Sarah Dysart on 30 Apr 1829 at Londonderry Cathedral.
Sarah was the daughter of John Dysart of Derry and Mile-end Hall Cheshire.
6 Caroline Knox fourth daughter married Robert Hillier Rickards at Glendermot
Church in July 1831
7 Thomas Knock born circa 1810 in Derry graduated Trinity College, Dublin.
8 Benjamina Knox youngest daughter married Captain Loeffel at the British
Embassy in Brussels on 28 Nov 1838.
2 Thomas Knox second son born circa 1768 graduated Trinity College, Dublin and took
Holy orders. He married Elinor (Helen) Dillon on 18 Jul 1793. Helen was the daughter
of Redmond Dillon of Ashbrooke, Co Dublin. Thomas died before 1816 and Elinor
died a widow at Longford in June 1828.
1 Jane Knox born circa 1798 died 30 Mar 1816 in Londonderry.
2 George Knox born circa 1806 married and lived at Cloonbarry, Co Sligo. He was
appointed resident magistrate of Co Sligo in 1856.
3 Ellen Knox married Godfrey Hogg at Strokestown on 17 Jan 1839.
3 Maurice Knox, third son born circa 1775 acquired the lands of Farn, Co Roscommon. He
married Anne Mabel Wilson in 1799. Anne was the daughter of James Wilson of Derks,
county Meath. They had at least two sons and three daughters. Maurice was a solicitor
of New Buildings, Capel Street and they lived at Prince Edward Terrace in Blackrock.
Anne Mabel died 25 Aug 1851 aged 74 at Prince Edward Terrace and is buried at
Carrigbrennan graveyard, Monkstown. Maurice died at Prince Edward terrace on
7 Jan 1852 and is buried with his wife.
1 George Knox, elder son born circa 1800 took holy orders. He was rector of
Donamon, Co Roscommon and married Frances Eugene Holmes in August 1836
at French Park Church, Co Roscommon. Frances was the daughter of Richard
Holmes, of Clogher, Co Sligo. He was appointed to the Rectory of Castle Blakeney,
Co Galway in 1865. George died 6 Oct 1871 at Ballybrack, Co Dublin. Maurice Knox
his son the informant. Frances died 26 Sep 1886 at 4 Kent Terrace, Dalkey, her
daughter Jane the informant. Both are buried at Stillorgan.
1 Jane Erskine Holmes Knox born circa 1839 in Co Roscommon. She died
unmarried on 30 Jul 1934 at Clarinda Park, Dun Laoghaire.
2 Maurice Knox born January 1846 in Roscommon licentiate of the RCSI in
1866. He was a surgeon major in HM 70th Regiment. He married Edith
Cave on 27 Sep 1880 at Subathu, India. Edith Mary was the second
daughter of Major General George Noble Cave, late Bengal Army. Maurice
retired from the army in 1897 and is listed on the medical register in
London in 1913. They had no living children in 1921. Maurice died at
Littlehampton, Sussex on 28 Apr 1930. Edith died in 1951.
2 Hannah Knox eldest daughter born circa 1805 married her cousin William
Christopher Knox, son of Alexander Knox on 27 Sep 1849 at Monkstown Church.
William of the Queen’s Bench Office died 21 Mar 1850 at 4 Brighton Vale,
Blackrock. Hannah died 5 Mar 1890 at 29 Corrig Avenue, Kingstown. Her niece
Jane Knox, of same address, her executor. She left 2k in personal estate.
3 Maurice Wilson Knox second son, born circa 1807. He married Elizabeth William
White in 1831. He purchased in 1862 the estate of Kilmannock in Co Wexford.
Maurice was a JP of Kilmannock, Co Wexford. Maurice died 7 Jan 1894 at Tassagh
Lower, Co Antrim late of Ballyeskar Co Wexford. His wife Francis was granted
letters of administration.
1 Francis William White Knox born circa 1848 at Ellen House, Co Armagh. He
married Annie Catherine Hudson and they had at least five children. They
were living at Kindlestown Upper, Delgany in 1901. Francis died in 1901 in
Co Wicklow.
2 Elizabeth Knox married Robert Boyd of Ballier, Co Armagh on 3 Jul 1862 at
Ballyhack.
4 Alexander Knox, fourth son was a captain in the Donegal Militia, married Miss Lyneham.
1 William Christopher Knox born circa 1809 a solicitor of Dublin married Jane Hume
Smith at Rathmullen Church on 17 Aug 1837. Jane was the daughter of Thomas
Smith of Rathmullen, Co Donegal. Jane died at Stanhope Place, Kingstown from
puerperal fever on 15 Sep 1838 aged 29. She is buried at Carrigbrennan graveyard
in Monkstown.
1 Son Knox born at Stanhope Place, Kingstown on 11 Sep 1838.
William secondly married his cousin Hannah daughter of Maurice Knox on
27 Sep 1849 at Monkstown Church. William of the Queen’s Bench Office died
21 Mar 1850 at 4 Brighton Vale, Blackrock and is buried at Carrigbrennan graveyard.
Hannah died 5 Mar 1890 at 29 Corrig Avenue, Kingstown. Her niece Jane Knox, of
same address, her executor. She left 2k in personal estate and is buried with her
husband.
5 Mary Anne Knox married Thomas Conry on 16 Oct 1806 at Strokestown House.
