Samuel Kirwan was a clerk living at 23 Lower Rutland Street. He was the son of John Kirwan.
He married Anna Burchell of 13 Apr 1857 at St Thomas’ Church, Dublin. Anna of Willington
Place, London was the daughter of Valentine Burchell, of Kilmoney, Carrigaline, Co Cork and
his wife Alicia. Anna left London and the marriage took place without the knowledge of her
father. Her father felt it was too late to intercede and settled a house on his daughter and
her issue as a marriage settlement. ‘I hereby settle, assign and make over to my daughter
Anne, on the occasion of her marriage with Mr. Samuel Kirwan, the house and premises No. 1
Charlemont-avenue, Kingstown, free of all rent, during my own term of the same, to the purpose
and effect that the same shall be settled upon herself and her issue by the said Samuel Kirwan, at
their marriage.' The marriage wasn’t a success and Anna returned home to her father after
Samuel’s violent conduct with her and him being bound over to keep the peace. Samuel took
her father to court as he had been promised other property at a later date in a letter
accompanying the settlement. Samuel lost his petition but Anne returned to the family home
anyway and despite a number of series altercations involving the police they stayed together.
Samuel, a solicitors’ apprentice died 24 Sep 1891 in Clones late of 14 Goldsmith Street, his
son Valentine the informant. He left two houses in Cabra, No 2 & 4 McCarthy’s buildings and
£30 in personal estate, his widow Ann of 30 Richmond Road, Drumcondra and his sister Marie
Margaretta Kirwan his executors. He was buried at St George’s, Dublin. Anne died 12 Aug 1903
at Bootle, Liverpool.

3 Valentine Francis Kirwan born 6 Nov 1861 at 3 Upper Clanbrassil Street baptised at St
Luke’s on 31 Aug 1862. He was living at 45 Synge Street and married Hannah Narcissa
Barber on 1 Aug 1892 at St Peter’s, Dublin. Hannah was the daughter of James Barber, a
building contractor pf 45 Synge Street. They lived at 57 Grosvenor Road, Rathmines and
was a solicitor. He was considered one of the great authorities on Land Commission
procedure. Hannah died 13 Jun 1929 aged 56 and Valentine died November 1935, both
at 57 Grosvenor Road. Valentine was survived by six sons and three daughters. Hannah
and Valentine are buried at Mount Jerome.

is buried at Mount Jerome with her parents.
2 Samuel Valentine Kirwan born circa 1895 was called to the Irish Bar in 1923 and
worked with his father.
3 James Kiernan Kirwan born 26 Nov 1896 at Victoria Street joined the Mahratta Light
Infantry. He married Sally Castles in 1929. He died 3 Feb 1964 and is buried with his
parents.
4 Valentine Edmond Kirwan third son born 9 Jan 1899 at Victoria Street. He was a
solicitor’s assistant and married Doreen Alexandra Douglas on 6 Aug 1930 at the
Methodist Church, Blackrock. Doreen was the elder daughter of Jeremiah Joseph
Douglas, an accountant and civil servant in the Land Commission and his wife Elizabeth
Jane (Lillie) Jackson of Glenrafon, Green Road, Blackrock. She was the granddaughter
of Benjamin Douglas, a farmer from Lowland Baltinglass and his wife Phoebe Douglas.
Her father was considered one of leading experts of land purchase in Ireland. They
lived most of their married life at Dalkey Lodge and Doreen (Go-Go) was the founder of
the Beaufield Mews Restaurant in 1952.

6 Cecil Norman Kirwan born 16 Feb 1904 at Victoria Street married Anne Shackleton in
1933. He died in Croydon in 1966 and is buried at Mount Jerome.

8 Dorothy Muriel Kirwan born 21 Nov 1907 at Victoria Street died unmarried.

Mary Leahy as Walter Browne giving his occupation as porter on 28 Sep 1886 at Dublin
Registrar’s Office. An explanation note on the register gives his real name as Walter Blake
Kirwan but that he wasn’t prosecuted. Walter and Mary were living at Desmond Street with
six of their surviving eight children in 1911. Walter was a solicitor’s assistant.
