Kehoe of Wickham
Michael Kehoe married Catherine Butler
born circa 1754 September 1872
Bannow, Co Wexford Co Tipperary
died 23 Nov 1818
Michael Keogh born circa 1754 in Bannow, Co Wexford was the nephew of Mathew Cardiff, ship
builder of City Quay and Summerville, Booterstown. He was later Mathew’s partner in the ship
business. He married Catherine Butler in September 1792. Catherine was the daughter of
Thomas Butler of Kilcock/Kilcash, Co Tipperary. Michael purchased property in Lime Street,
Dublin in 1792 which he leased out for 51 years. Michael had an extensive timberyard at Sir
John Rogerson’s Quay and from here he sold all types of wood including Quebec pine, American
oak and Honduras mahogany. He also sold hogshead and pipe staves for the brewing industry.
He purchased the Dundrum Estate of Henry Hutton in 1809 and called it Wickham where he lived
until his death. In 1810 when riding past Platanus in Donnybrook on his way home to Dundrum,
he was robbed of ten guineas by four armed villains. In 1813 he put Wickham House up to rent
for the season and in 1814 he did the same and was also looking for a buyer in the interest of
100 Sir John Rogerson’s quay which included, the yard, dwelling house, vaults and stabling.
Michael died 23 Nov 1818 and was buried at Rathfarnham with his wife and brother Daniel.
Wickham House and the yard at Sir John Rogerson's Quay was for sale in 1820.
His brother Daniel was the captain and master of the Brig Sally and regularly sailed to Baltimore in
Maryland. He was also master of the Charming Mary which sailed to Jamaica and the Leeward
Islands. Daniel died circa 1889 and was buried in Rathfarnham. As was Michael’s nephew Michael
Kehoe who died 16 Jun 1821 aged 40. It is thought than Catherine predeceased her husband and
that it was Mrs Julia Maria Kehoe who inherited the life interest in the house. (Julia Maria Kehoe of
Aungier Street and later of Hartfield Lunatic Asylum in Drumcondra died in 1855.)
Eliza Kehoe niece of Michael Keogh married Laurence Sweetman of Ballymackesy, Co Wexford and
their eldest son was Michael Kehoe Sweetman. They also had two other sons Laurence Sweetman
and Daniel Pierse (Percy) Sweetman. Elizabeth died 13 August 1876.
Catherine Kehoe was another one of his nieces who benefitted under her uncle’s will and she
married Edmond Sweetman of Sweetmount, Co Wexford. They had a number of children including
Edmund Kehoe Sweetman, Farrell Sweetman and Michael Sweetman. They held the interest in the
lease of Wickham in 1853 and also in Michael’s property in Co Wexford. Eliza and Catherine were the
surviving executrixes in 1856.
