Christopher Joynt born 25.04.1828 at Ballina Mayo son of Henry Joynt. He married Lilly
Anna Noble on 06.06.1863 at St Anne’s Church, Dublin. Lily was the daughter of William
Noble Holton JP of Woodberry House, Roscommon. Lily died 19.10.1883 at Leeson
Street.
1 Henry Noble Holton Joynt born 24.03.1864 Bombay, India. In 1891 Henry aged 27
years was the Assistant Medical Officer in a Fever Hospital in Birmingham. Henry
died on 07.11.1915 near Sydney, New South Wales.
2 Eleanor Beatrice Mary Joynt eldest daughter born 10.06.1866 India died of
tuberculosis on 29.04.1902 aged 35 years at 21 Leeson Street and is buried at Mount
Jerome.
3 Maud Anna Evans Joynt 2nd daughter born 07.03.1868 Woodberry House,
Roscommon. She attended Alexandra College Dublin and the Royal University of
Ireland graduating with first class honours. She was a lecturer in literature and
taught at a number of Girls Colleges including her alma mater and also lectured at
the Royal University. She identified at a Christian of no church in both 1901 and 1911.
She was a member of the Irish Literary Society and considered a brilliant lecturer. In
1905 she gave a lecture ‘Irish Precursors to the Divine Comedy’ 1909 was on ‘Arthur
Darley and Some Traditions of Irish Music’. She was also a member of a number of
non militant women’s groups to protect women’s interests. She was a regular
contributor to the New Ireland Review.
In 1911 she was assistant to the Editor of Irish Dictionary, Royal Irish Academy. In
1912 she was one of the founding members of a committee to protest against the
dismissal of Hanna Sheehy Skeffington from Rathmines School of Commerce. In
1918 she is noted as having announced. ‘I have lived to see a good many changes
realised which in my young days were regarded as dreams impossible of realisation.
Men can fly; women can vote for members of parliament; I begin to think that I may
even live to see women elected as members of parliament.’ She received an Honorary
D Lit in 1937. Maud an Irish Celtic scholar and linguist died unmarried on 24.07.1940
aged 72 years at Portobello Nursing Home late of 69 Stephens Green and is buried at
Mount Jerome. Eleanor Marie Knott, MRIA wrote her obituary.
4 Lilian Gertrude Joynt third daughter born 10.09.1870 Bombay, India married James
Berry, a planter and second son of the late William Berry of Insch, Aberdeen on
11.06.1896 at Labasa, Fiji.
5 Mabel Sarah Joynt born 16.05.1872 in India living at Leeson Park in 1901. She was a
teacher at Alexandra College for forty-six years and retired as vice-principal in 1941.
She died unmarried on 04.05.1950 aged 77 years at 89 Anglesea Road and is buried
at Mount Jerome.
6 Francis Christopher Dudley Joynt second son born 04.11.1873 at 7 Haddington Road,
Kingstown living at Leeson Park in 1901. He was a solicitor and in 1913 he went into
partnership with Samuel H Crawford. He was secretary and sometime president of
Lansdowne Rugby Club. Francis a senior partner of Joynt and Crawford Solicitors
died unmarried on 05.02.1944 aged 70 years at 89 Anglesea Road, Donnybrook and
is buried at Mount Jerome.
7 William Grierson Joynt born 17.04.1875 at King Street, Athlone. William an MD of 56
Grand Parade, Cork married Henrietta Haynes daughter of late Henry Haynes of Inch,
Douglas on 10.08.1904 at the Parish Church of St Nicholas, Cork. They lived at
Malahide before moving to South Africa.
8 Edwin Mally Joynt (twin) born circa 1878 died 26.03.1879 aged 5 months and 20 days
in India.
9 Herbert Edward Joynt (twin) born circa 1878 India died 23.12.1878 aged 87 days in
India.
10 George Arthur Dudley Joynt youngest son born 10.03.1880 in India educated at High
School Dublin and graduated Trinity as an engineer. He was living at Leeson Park
in 1901. He was a Methodist minister and married Gertrude Harriett Cooke on
07.07.1915 at Clontarf Methodist Church and they had three daughters. Gertrude
was the youngest daughter of John H Cooke of Clontarf. George was appointed
president of the Methodist Church in Ireland in 1943. He died on 31.01.1956 in
Larne and is buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Evelyn Joynt born 1919 in Bandon, Cork. She joined the Women's Royal Army
Corps and attained the rank of Major. She was awarded an MBE in 1967 and
was World Wide Commissioner for Guiding in 1968.
Christopher was Deputy Surgeon General of the Indian Army. Christopher a widower of
Claremount, Carrickmines married secondly Anne Eliza (Bessie) Keough daughter of the
late William Keough of Rockfield House, Dundrum and New Orchard, Kilkenny on
11.08.1887 at St George’s, Bloomsbury, Middlesex. The lived at Claremount until 1894.
Bessie died at Portrush on 15.08.1911. Christopher died on 04.06.1915 at Leeson Park,
the informant his son Francis.
