Joseph Anderson born circa 1836 third son of James Anderson of Belfast moved to Dublin in
1856, and joined the firm of Fawcett and Co, afterwards known as Bewley & Anderson of
Henry Street. He married Hannah (Annie) Godbey on 8 Apr 1859 at St Mary’s Church, Edgehill,
Liverpool. Hannah was the third daughter of Robert Godbey of Dundalk. He started the
business of J Anderson and Co at Bachelor's Walk. In 1884 he purchased the old-established
business of Lewis Heinekey and traded at Heinekey and Anderson from 62 Sackville Street.
He was a director of the Red Bank Restaurant Company in D’Olier Street and a director of
Bagots, Hutton and Company, wine merchants of Dublin. When attempts to have Sackville
Street renamed O’Connell Street in honour of Daniel O’Connell, he organised a petition that
all but 15 occupiers of Upper Sackville Street signed. In 1885 Joseph was one of the eleven
plaintiffs (all trading from Sackville Street) in an action to restrain the Corporation of Dublin
from changing the name. He was a Freemason and governor of the Irish Masonic Schools. They
were living at Summerfield, Dalkey from 1886 to 1893. Hermitage Blackrock from 1903 to 1906.
Joseph died 1 Nov 1911 at Elpis Private Hospital on Mount Street late of Westcroft, Seapoint.
He is buried at Deansgrange and left 5k in personal estate. Hannah died 26 Sep 1918 at
Westcroft, Booterstown and is buried with her husband.
1 Frederic Joseph Anderson eldest son born circa 1860. He married Edith Stoddart
Smith on 6 Apr 1893 at All Saint’s, Princes Park, Liverpool. Edith was the daughter of
Thomas Sands Johnson Smith of Princes Park. He was a wine merchant and shipping
agent of Liverpool and later of London. Frederic died 25 Sep 1939 at St John’s Woods,
London and left 26k in personal estate.

2 Herbert William Anderson younger son born circa 1864. He was a major in the 3rd
Battalion, Connaught Rangers. He was charged of fraud, passing himself of as a DSO
and dishonouring cheques in 1904. He was found guilty but insane. He died
31 Jan 1906 at the Hanwell Asylum in London.
3 Florence Josephine Anderson born 29 Sep 1865 at Belleville, Rathgar. She died
unmarried in Dun Laoghaire on 12 Jul 1953 and is buried with her parents in
Deansgrange.
4 Madeline Hannah Constance Anderson born 17 Dec 1876 at Kenilworth Square died
unmarried on 31 May 1956 at Mounttown and is buried with her parents in
Deansgrange.
