Lewis Shaw born 22 Aug 1819 at Birmingham, Derbyshire son of John and Mary Shaw. He
was a grocer of Holy Well Cross, Chesterfield and married Ann Charlton on 16 Jul 1850 at
Chesterfield. Ann was the daughter of William Charlton, a farmer of Callow. Lewis was a
large shareholder in the Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Bank and suffered substantial
losses when it failed in 1878. They lived at Cobden House in Chesterfield and Lewis and
Ann had retired by 1881. Lewis was chairman of the local floral society, a member of the
local Unitarian Church and a member of the local board of guardians. Lewis, one of the
largest property owners in the town died on 21 Apr 1891 at Cobden House, Chesterfield.
Ann died 18 Feb 1897 in Sheffield at the home of her son in law Walter.
1 Mary Walker Shaw eldest daughter born 1850 at Chesterfield. She married the Rev
Alexander Farquharson on the 13 Sep 1883 at the Unitarian Chapel, Elder Yard,
Chesterfield. They had two children and were living at Camden Square, London in
1921. Their son Captain Lewis Shaw Farquharson was killed in action on
12 May 1915 at Ypres. He is listed on Ireland's Memorial Record.
2 Harriet Martineau Shaw second daughter born 1852 at Chesterfield married Arthur
Hallam on 17 Jan 1877 at Chesterfield Parish Church. Arthur was a surgeon and the son
of Alder Hallam, Sharrow House, Sheffield. The couple and their three children were
living in Sheffield in 1901.
3 Oliver Cromwell Shaw born 1854 in Chesterfield. He was a medical doctor and married
Frances Winnifrid Wood in 1890. They had two children and were living at Kings Norton,
Worcestershire in 1901.
4 John Hampden Shaw born in Chesterfield in 1856. In 1881 he was an architectural
draughtsman, living with his parents and siblings at Cobden Road, Chesterfield,
Derbyshire. He moved to Dublin circa 1885 and set up practice as an architect and
engineer at 5 Westmoreland Street. One of his first commissions was - alterations and
additions to the townhall in Maryborough (Portlaoise). The following year he was
elected surveyor to the New Kilmainham Township. Further commissions followed
from townships, councils and boards of guardians from around the country which
included the building of dispensaries and labourer’s cottages. He designed and
oversaw the refurbishment of 80 Grafton Street for J J Boland in 1889 which led to
further commissions, at 60 Grafton Street for J O'Connell and 92 Grafton Street
for Switzer & Co in 1893. He also completed alterations for Benjamin Hyam, tailor of
30 Dame Street in 1892. That same year he contracted typhoid fever.
He was onboard the Dublin Steam packer which collided with another vessel during
fog on the Mersey, and was injured along with several other people but made a full
recovery. He was a founder member of The Irish Trotting Association (horses) and
designed the track and 90’ long stand, Refreshment Saloons and Press Rooms on the
site. The land was provided by Lord Ashburn on a 500 year lease at £60 per annum
close to the Phoenix Park in 1892.
In 1896 he designed the new Balmoral showgrounds. He married Kate Ethel Robinson
Mason on 12 Jan 1898 at Holy Trinity Church, Llandudno, Caernarvonshire, Wales. Kate
was the third daughter of Edwin and Rebecca Mason of Chesterfield. John identified as
Unitarian and Kate as Church of Ireland. They were living at The Turret in Cowper Gardens
by 1900 and Kate bred and exhibited dogs (pugs). They moved to Netley, South Hill in
1903. John designed four houses on Merrion Road for Robert S Langley which were
built in 1911 but became the subject of a legal dispute. On retiring from practice in
1915, John and Kate moved from Netley to Llandudno cum Eglwys Rhos, Conway,
Caernarvonshire, Wales, where John died on 10 Apr 1932. Kate died 20 Nov 1935 at
Llandudno, her son Lewis and daughter Alice her executors.
1 Hampden Charlton Mason Shaw eldest son born 21 Sep 1901 at The Turret,
Rathmines and joined the RAF. Flying Officer Shaw was killed in a flying accident
on 12 Aug 1924 at the Shotwick Aerodrome in Chester. He is buried at St Tudno's
graveyard in Llandudno.

3 Alice Ethel Low Shaw born 13 Nov 1909 at Netley on South Hill Avenue.

6 Charles Garibaldi Shaw born 1860 at Chesterfield was a solicitor’s clerk living with his
parents in 1881. Charles a solicitor married Nina Noemie Barker 20 31 Mar 1897 at
Christchurch, Lancaster Gate, London. Nina was the daughter of George Bark of Upper
Norwood. They were living at 1 Matlock Road, Caversham, Oxfordshire in 1911 with
their daughter.
7 Annie Shaw born circa 1863 married Walter Hallam, at Upper Chapel, Sheffield in
November 1893. Her brother John gave her away. Walter was a surgeon and they were
living at Burngreave Road, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield with their son in 1901.
8 Lewis Charlton Shaw born 2 May 1866 at Chesterfield. He was a silver & electro plate
manufacturer living with his parents in 1891. He married Ann Furness in 1890 at
Tideswell, Derbyshire. He was a farmer living at Worthing, Sussex in 1911 with his wife
and two children.
