James Doyle of Drummartin House
James Doyle married Catherine (Kate) Plunkett

James Doyle took possession of Drummartin House 26 November 1858. The lease, which was
purchased from the Byrne Darcy family, was effective for a period of 70 years and 6 months
and was subject to an annual rent of £50 payable half yearly. The property comprised the
dwelling house and offices, 7 acres 1 rood and 12 perches (former plantation measure) of land
and a small house with a half-acre garden that formed a gateway and entrance. Doyle, having
raised a mortgage of £1,380 in January 1878, retained possession of the property until 11 June
the same year when the loan was cleared and the residue of the lease was sold to James
Winstanley.
James Doyle was the son of Gerald Doyle a grocer from Rathmines Co Dublin and his wife Brigid
Faye. He was baptised at St Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, Werburgh St, Dublin in October
1813. He married Catherine (Kate) Plunkett 21 Nov 1841 in the same church. Kate was the
daughter of Thomas Plunkett, most likely a silk dyer of Mark’s Alley, Dublin. As there was no
official register of births prior to 1864 it has not been possible to establish if the couple had any
children. James was admitted to King’s Inns in 1843 his educational history having been attested
to by his father-in-law Thomas. He practiced law from a premises at 5 Harcourt Street, Dublin.
They lived at Drummartin House from 1858 To 1878. His business declined and they left
Drummartin House and rented a house on Churchtown Road from Mr Mc McCabe, victualler.
James died at Annadale, Churchtown Road on 23 Sep 1887 after an altercation with a bailiff
employed By Mr McCabe who was due two quarters rent on the property.
