John Hutton born circa 1756 son of Robert Hutton and Sarah Lewis married Priscilla Dix from
Hackney on 3 Dec 1781 at Hackney. He was a coachbuilder of Dublin at 63 Great Britain
Street in 1784. He moved his coach making business to 57 Summerhill in 1789 and
disengaged himself from the mail coach in business by 1793. He sold his premises at Great
Britain Street in 1795. He died on 7 Aug 1830 at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire where he had
gone for the benefit of his health. His body was repatriated and he was buried at St George’s,
Whitworth Road, Drumcondra. Priscilla died 6 Nov 1835 at Kilmore, Co Dublin and was buried
at St George’s. In 1836 Kilmore, Artane on 41 acres was put up for auction.
1 Robert Hutton born circa 1784 married Caroline Crompton on 3 Feb 1821 at Childwell
Church, near Wavertree. Caroline was the youngest daughter of Peter Crompton of Eton
House, Lancashire. He was an MP for Dublin with Daniel O’Connell. They lived at
Putney Park, Surrey.
1 Compton Hutton born 1822 eldest son educated at Trinity College Cambridge
married Harriet Sophia Holland on 1 Aug 1865. She was the daughter of Edward
Holland of Dumbleton Hall and died in 1908. Compton died in 1910.
2 Letitia Hutton only daughter born circa 1789 married Henry Hutton on 23 Sep 1823 and
died in 1851. She was buried at St George’s.
3 Thomas Hutton born circa 1788 in Dublin. He married Sally Ferguson on 1 Jul 1814. She
was the daughter of James and Althea Maria Ferguson of Whitepark, near Ballyclare. Sally
died 6 Mar 1815 at Summerhill.
Thomas secondly married Margaret Hutton on 22 Jan 1818. Margaret was the youngest
daughter of the late Maxwell Hutton, merchant of James’ Street and his wife Nessy Rosavo.
By 1836 they were living at Elm Park, Goose Green, Drumcondra, Co Dublin. Thomas a JP &
DL was a coach builder in business with his father and in 1850 was appointed to HM Stables
by Master of the Horse, the Duke of Norfolk. In 1851 their premises at Summerhill went on
fire and they lost all the carriages they had built for the great Hyde Park London exhibition,
but managed to save the railway carriages they were building. They built the Irish State
Coach for Queen Victoria in 1852 which is still used for ceremonial occasions in London.
Thomas was a founder member of the Zoological gardens and a member of the RHS. In
their later years Thomas and Margaret won numerous prizes for their gardens in
Drumcondra with their gardener Mr P Connor. Thomas died on 12 Nov 1865 at Elm Park
and was buried at St George’s burial ground (Whitworth Road). Thomas left 8K in personal
estate, probate to his sons Thomas & Lucius and his son in law James Murland. The interest
in the lease of Elm Park was put up for sale in 1866. Margaret died 11 Jan 1877 at Fitzwilliam
Place aged 79. She was buried at St Georges. She left 7K in personal estate, probate to her
sons Thomas & Lucius.
1 Narissa Rosano (Rosa) Hutton eldest daughter born 15 Oct 1818 at Summerhill
baptised at. Eustace Street Presbyterian Church. She married widower Marmion
Wilme Savage on 28 Nov 1846 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Marmion was a barrister
and the son of the Rev Henry Savage and Sarah Bewley. He had a son Henry from his
first marriage who died age 20 in 1870. They moved to England in 1856 and Marmion
worked as a journalist, editor of The Examiner Newspaper and was an author of
novels including The Bachelor of the Albany and The Women of Business. Rosa wrote
short stories for the Argosy magazine. Marmion died 1 May 1872 at Torquay. Rosa
died 5 Oct 1891 at 8 Fitzwilliam Place. She left 13k in personal estate; probate to her
brothers Thomas & Lucius. She was buried with sister Priscilla at Mount Jerome.
2 Priscilla Matilda Hutton second daughter born 14 Nov 1819 at Summerhill. She married
James William Murland on 17 Jul 1854 at the Chapel of the British Embassy. James was a
director and chairman of the Dublin and Drogheda Railway. He was appointed to the
Commission of Endowed Schools in 1856. Priscilla died 6 Feb 1882 at Nutley,
Booterstown and left 1k in personal estate. James died at Nutley on 20 May 1890 aged
76 and left 98k in personal estate. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Annie Murland born 17 Mar 1860 died 21 May 1882 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
3 Thomas (Maxwell) Hutton eldest son born April 1821 married Annette Louise Meyer on
7 Jan 1858 at Manchester. Thomas was a coachbuilder of Summerhill (now Dublin Bus
Depot). Annette was the daughter of Meijer Sigismund Meyer of Smedley New Hall near
Manchester. In 1871 he took a lease on Altidore near Bray. Thomas had 900 acres in Co
Meath. Thomas died 4 Feb 1896 at Summerhill and was buried at St George’s. He left 7k
in personal estate. Annette was living at Summerhill in 1901 and 1911. She died at
Eglinton Road on 18 Jan 1911 aged 87.
1 Francis Morris (Frank) Hutton born 23 Sep 1859 at 118 Summerhill. He married
Marguerite Lydia Russell at St George’s Church on 16 Mar 1898. Marguerite was the
daughter of John Russell, solicitor of Mountjoy Square. They were living at 29
Mountjoy Square in 1911 with their two daughters. Frank died 19 Mar 1917 at
Mountjoy Square.
2 Annie Louise Hutton born 11 Nov 1862 at 118 Summer Hill. As only daughter she
died after an accident when the donkey and chaise she was driving overturned on
16 Oct 1871 at Altidore, Co Wicklow.
3 Thomas Maxwell Noel Hutton (twin) born 25 Dec 1864 at 118 Summerhill, Dublin.
He was a timber merchant and married Alice May Robertson born in Scotland circa
1880. He was MD of Messrs Brooks Thomas & Co Ltd, John Hutton & Sons, builders
and director of Minch Norton & Co, Westmoreland Street retired in 1937. Thomas
died 17 Jun 1937 at Roebuck Grove. He left 28k in personal estate. Alice died
6 Apr 1972 at Ballinahinch, Ashford, Co Wicklow aged 92, her son Wilfred of
Carrigaline, Co Cork the informant

Brooks Thomas. He was married and living in Carrigaline Co Cork in 1972.
2 Walter Howard Hutton born 2 Apr 1907 at Upper Pembroke Street married
Cecile Raydene Williams in July 1935. He was attached to the Royal Air Force
at Pembroke, Wales in 1937 and working for the Air Ministry in 1939 living at
Westbourne Terrace, Paddington, City of Westminster.
3 Charlotte Louise (Louise) Hutton born 19 Nov 1911 at 29 Pembroke Street
was a radiographer at St Ultan and Harcourt Street Hospital in 1937. She was
also a duet singer and competed regularly in the Feis Ceoil with her partner
May Robertson. She changed direction and became an actress working
under Michael MacLiamore, acted at the Peacock and the Gate Theatre. She
moved to London and when she returned to Ireland, bought a farm in Ashford
and wrote her memoirs.
4 Walter Louis Hutton (twin) born 25 Dec 1864 at 118 Summerhill, Dublin was a
maltster and Corn factor. He died unmarried on 27 Nov 1901 at Summerhill.
5 Alfred Hugh (Hugh) Hutton born 26 Jul 1868 at 118 Summerhill, Dublin. He was a
coach builder married Maud Alexandra Lombe Atthill at Monkstown Church on
23 Feb 1899. Maud was the daughter of Lombe Atthill, MD of Monkstown Castle.
Hugh was a coach builder living with his wife and two daughters at Summerhill in
1911. Hugh died 3 Sep 1915 at Summerhill and was buried at Mount Jerome.
6 Augusta Maud (Maud) Hutton born 6 Feb 1875 at Fitzwilliam Place. She died
unmarried on 25 Jan 1963 at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital late of 71 Merrion Road and
was buried at Mount Jerome.
4 William Louis Hutton second son born August 1822 at Upton Lodge near Dublin. He
married Julia Parker on 27 Aug 1847 at Glynn. Julia was the daughter of Mr Parker of
Newcastle, Co Limerick. William was a civil engineer and died 29 Jun 1855 at New
South Wales.
5 John Hutton born at Kilmore in October 1823 died an infant.
6 Anna Maria (Annie) Hutton youngest daughter born circa 1825 died at Elm Park on
2 Jun 1853. She was buried at St George’s She had been betrothed to Thomas Davis
who died in 1845.
7 John Dix Hutton born October 1826 died 31 Jul 1831and was buried at St George’s.
8 Francis Hutton born 14 Apr 1828 died 7 Aug 1831 and was buried at St George’s.
9 Lucius Octavius Hutton fourth son born circa 1831 married Margaret Bruce on
3 May 1854 in Belfast. Margaret was the eldest daughter of the Rev William Bruce of
the Farm, Belfast. Lucius and his brother Thomas joined their father’s coach building
business. By 1901 Lucius was a JP and railway/bank director. Lucius died 22 Apr 1911
at Wyckham.
10 Howard Hutton youngest born circa 1833. He married Emma Kenrick on 3 Dec 1857
at the Parish Church, West Bromwich. Emma was the eldest daughter of A Kenrick of
West Bromwich. He died on 1 Jan 1894 at Cheyne Court, Chelsea, London and left 6k in
personal estate.
*In 1898 John Colohan became the major shareholder in John Hutton & Sons. With the rise of
the motor industry, John Hutton’s & Sons took on the Daimler agency for Ireland in 1900. They
were offered the Ford agency in 1907 but turned it down. John Colohan left in 1908 and the
firm went into voluntary liquidation in 1925.
