Barney Hughes son of Peter Hughes and Cate Quin baptised at Armagh on 8 Jul 1808. He
married Jane Beatty on 7 Apr 1828 at St Patrick's Church, Belfast. Barney opened his Public
Bakery on 3 Dec 1840 at 71 Donegall Street and the Railway Bakery in Donegall Place in 1847
and later another bakery on the Falls Road. He was awarded a military contact in 1841 and
announced that he would sell to the public at the same price. He encouraged the public to
visit his premises to view the bread making process. He was a an astute self promoter and
initiated a excursion for his workers each year which was well publicised. He also donated to
charity which again was reported on. He commissioned a 130 ton schooner and launched
the boat named after his wife in 1845. Jane died 25 Aug 1847 aged 43 at Donegall Street and
was buried at Friar’s Bush burying ground.
1 Peter J Hughes born circa 1831 went to Liverpool. He married Elizabeth Boland on
19 Jan 1853 at the Pro Cathedral, Dublin. Elizabeth was the daughter of Patrick Boland.
2 Thomas Joseph Hughes born circa 1833. He was a farmer and married Margaret
Warnock on 19 Jun 1855 at the Presbyterian Church in Newtownards and they had six
children of whom one survived in 1911. Thomas died on 3 Jul 1914 at Sea Cliff Road,
Bangor.

2 Bernard Hughes born Belfast a miller in 1901.
3 Edward Hughes youngest son born with 1835. He married Mary Frances Hughes circa
1858. He went to America but returned to Belfast when his father became unwell and
took over the business after his death. He moved the bakery to a 3 acre site on Springfield
Road in 1884 where he also had a milling operation. He was a JP and appointed chairman
of the ‘Irish News’ in 1891. Edward travelled with his wife Mary to Liverpool with a niece
who was retuning to America. He died 5 Oct 1893 in Liverpool and his body was
repatriated and he was buried at Milltown cemetery. He left 59k in personal estate. This
was left to Bernard Devine, his works manager and his solicitor Andrew O’Rourke to hold
in trust for his four children for 12 years. After his death the executors set up a limited
company to carry on the business and Bernard Devine was managing director. The bakery
closed in 1979. Mary and her children moved to Derryvolgie Avenue.
In 1907 the trust had more than doubled in value and 92k was divided among his four
children. The remaining trust value was divided between Annie and Jane in 1921. Mary
died at Oatlands on 22 Mar 1929 aged 83.
1 Jane Mary Teresa Hughes eldest daughter born circa 1864 married Peter O’Reilly
O’Connell of Maudabawn on on 27 Apr 1907 at St Paul of the Cross, Mount Argus.
Peter was a medical doctor and the son of Patrick O’Connell and Ann O’Reilly.
2 Annie Maria Hughes born circa 1876 died unmarried at Oatlands on 22 Aug 1925
late of Carrigart, Belfast.
3 Mary Frances Bernadette (Bernadette) Hughes born circa 1879 died unmarried on
25 Mar 1917 at the North Circular Road.
4 Bernard Patrick Joseph Hughes born 9 Jun 1869 at Ballykeel House, Hollywood. He
was taken to court by Kathleen Garland for breach of promise in 1899 but a
settlement was reached in advance. He was a barrister and died in 1918 unmarried.
By 1848 he was stamping his own bread to avoid confusion with ‘inferior loaves’. He secondly
married Margaret Mary Teresa Lowry in July 1849 at Rosstrevor. Margaret was the eldest daughter
of John Lowry of Dublin and the grand daughter of Francis Lowry of Killadoren and Mountmellick,
Queen’s County. He automated the bread making industry in Ireland and patented a sealed oven
to improve cleanliness. He was elected a town councilor for Smithfield in 1855/6 the first Catholic
on the Council since the reign of Queen Elizabeth. He developed 10 houses for rent on the Falls
Road and by 1859 the bakery was also producing biscuits. That same year he donated a site for a
new church and model school on the Falls Road. Bernard died 22 Sep 1870 at Riverston House,
Holywood and left 16k in personal estate. John Fagan his son in law and Edward his son, were his
executors. Lore has it that he was the inventor of the 'Belfast Bap'.
4 Roseanna Hughes eldest daughter born 27 Jul 1850 died at Menton France on 10 Dec 1865
and an altar was dedicated in her memory at the Pro Cathedral, Falls Road.
5 Teresa Hughes born circa 1852 was professed a nun at the St Paul’s Convent of Mercy
Crumlin Road in 1869.
6 Bernard Hughes born circa 1854 youngest son died 2 Mar 1854 at Rose Lodge.
7 Mary Catherine (Mary Kate) Hughes born circa 1856 youngest daughter married John Fagan,
(Fegan) a surgeon on 30 Jul 1872 at St Malachy’s, Belfast. John was the eldest son of James
Fagan. They were living at Graigavern and four of their five children had survived. John was
knighted in 1910 and died in 1930. Mary died in 1914.
1 James Bernard Fagan eldest son born circa 1873, playwright, actor and director.
