Robert Holmes of Moycashel, Kilbeggan youngest son of late Richard Holmes of Prospect, King’s
County. A leading agriculturist Robert introduced English short horns as a substitute for native
Kerry cattle. In October 1841, Vulcan a horse he had bred won the Cambridgeshire Stakes.
Robert married Jane Henn at St Peter's Church on 21.12.1842. Jane was the daughter of William
Henn of 17 Merrion Square, Dublin a Master in Chancery. Robert died at Surrey Lodge,
Sydenham on 23.10.1870 and Jane died 03.05.1905 at St Leonards, Sussex.
1 Sir Robert William Arbuthnot Holmes born 25.12.1843 at Upper Mount Street, Dublin.
Robert a barrister married Isabella Elrington daughter of Joseph Faviere Elrington of
Carrick Brennan, Monkstown on 28.12.1871 at St Stephen’s Church, Dublin. Robert was
Treasury Remembrancer for Ireland and was created KCB in 1902. Robert died on
19.02.1910 at Ivanhoe, Lansdowne Road late of 5 Clifton Terrace, Monkstown and is
buried at Deansgrange. Dame Isabella died on 03.03.1925 of Bemerton House formerly
of Riversfield, Bemerton, Salisbury.

3 William Henn Holmes 2nd son born circa 09.11.1846. William of the civil service in India
married Mary Rachel Russell 2nd daughter of John Scott Russell of Westwood Lodge,
Sydenham and granddaughter of late Sir Daniel Toler Osborne of Beechwood, Nenagh
on 29.10.1872 at St Bartholomew’s Church, Sydenham. Rachel died of Cholera on
22.07.1882 aged 40 years at Benares, India and William died on 01.01.1934 at the
Vandyke Hotel, Cromwell Road, London.
4 George Charles Vincent Holmes 3rd son born 09.10.1848 at Moycashel. George a Civil
engineer was educated at Downing College, Cambridge and studied mechanical
engineering at the London and Northwestern Railway Company’s works at Crewe.
George was the resident engineer for the construction of the iron rotunda at the
Vienna International Exhibition in 1873. George married Louisa Eugenie Addison
daughter of Charles Greenstreet Addison, a barrister on 22.07.1880 at Holy Trinity Parish
Church, Brompton. He was Secretary to the Institution of Naval Architects from 1878 to
1901. In 1901 the King appointed George as chairman of the Board of Works Ireland and
he was created Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1906 so was then
entitled to be addressed as 'Sir'. The family lived at Dornden from 1906 to 1913. He was
the author of a book on steam engines and also a book on Ancient and Modern Ships.
Sir George of 41 Half Moon Street, Piccadilly died on 13.02.1926 aged 75 years following an
operation at the London Homeopathic Hospital. Probate to wife Dame Louisa. Louisa died
on 30.07.1943 at Kerfield Cottage, Peebles, Scotland.
1 Commander Robert Gerard Addison Holmes born 31.08.1881 of 13 Sussex Place,
Kensington. Educated at Wellington College and Glasgow University Robert founded
the Sea Scouts in 1908. He served both at sea and in the air during the First World
War. Robert retired to Peebles and died there on 01.12.1963.
5 Edmond Gore Alexander Holmes born circa 17.07.1850 at Moycashel. Edmond an Inspector
of Schools married Florence Mary Syme daughter of Peter Macfarlane Syme on 22.06.1880
at the Parish Church of St Thomas, Portman Square. Edmond was a Writer and Poet.
Florence died circa 12.08.1927 aged 67 years following a fall from a third-floor window at 5
Phene Street, Chelsea. Edmond of 5 Phene Street, Chelsea died on 14.10.1936 at 198 Cromwell
Road.
6 Eleanor Jane Pamela Holmes born circa 01.03.1853 Westmeath, She was a novelist and married
George Edward Aubert Ross, a widower in October 1921 in Kensington. George was a barrister
and died on 18.03.1931 of Earls Court. Eleanor of Seafield House Nursing Home, Seaton,
Devonshire died on 26.10.1942 as a result of enemy action after a German bomber jettisoned its
payload on its return journey.
7 Thomas Rice Edward Holmes 5th son born 24.05.1855 at Waterstone House near Athlone,
Westmeath married Eliza Isobel Isaacs daughter of Lionel Isaacs in 1888 in Kensington. They
lived in Kensington in 1911.
8 Charles Leslie Arbuthnot Holmes youngest son born 21.09.1858 died on 08.06.1874 aged 15
years at Davies Street, Berkeley Square, London and is interred at Marsh Gibbon,
Buckinghamshire.
9 Julia Susan Christiana Holmes born circa 1863 in Surrey married Walter Charles Alan Ker a
barrister son of Alan Ker a Judge of the Supreme Court of Jamaica on 13.08.1885 at Holy Trinity
Brompton, Kensington. Julia was found drowned in the River Thames on 27.12.1900 aged 38
years.
