Henry White of Seamount/St Helens
Henry White fourth son of Luke White, bookseller and lottery merchant was born circa 1790.
He was with the 14th Light Dragoons in 1811 and served in the Peninsular Wars. He fought
at the Siege of Badajoz and at the Battle of Salamanca. He was resident at Woodlands
(Luttrellstown) and married Eleanor Sophia (Ellen) Dempster on 8 Oct 1828 at Bangor, North
Wales. Eleanor was the daughter of William Soper Dempster of Skibo Castle, County of
Sunderland. Henry was the liberal member for Co Dublin from 1823 to 1832. They lived at
Seamount from 1837 and they had changed the name to St Helens by 1844. He was Lord
Lieutenant of Leitrim in 1841 and had a residence at Belgrave Square from where they
entertained. He was an MP for Longford In 1846, they went on a tour of German and in the
December of that year they donated £10 to the parish priest of Booterstown church for the
poor in their neighbourhood. In 1847 Henry inherited Woodlands on the death of his brother
Thomas. He put the mansion house and demesne up 'for let for 7 years or the interest in the
lease for sale'. The house was on 40 Irish acres. By 1847 his seat was Rathcline and he was
appointed commander of the Longford Militia for a second time. He was also in a train crash
but escaped with minor injuries. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Annaly, of Annaly
and Rathcline in the County of Longford on 19 Aug 1863. Ellen died 12 May 1868 at
Grosvenor Place. Henry died on 3 Sep 1873 at Sunbury Park House, Sunbury Park, Sunbury
on Thames. He left 35k in personal estate. His estates at Woodlands, Rathcline and
Ballydown were left to his son Luke and his estates in Clare and Tipperary were left to his son
Charles.
1 Luke White eldest son born 26 Sep 1829 in London was educated at Eton. He
entered the Light Dragoons in 1847 and retired in 1853. He married Emily Armit
Stuart on 24 Aug 1853 at Twickenham. Emily was the daughter of the James Stuart
of Edinburgh. He entered parliament in 1861 as MP for Longford and Kidderminster
from 1862 to 1865. He served as a Junior Lord of the Treasury from 1862 to 1866. He
He became the 2nd Baron Annaly in 1873 on the death of his father. He was Aide de
Camp to Lord Londonderry, the Viceroy of Ireland. He died on 16 Mar 1888 at
Funchal Madeira where he had gone for the benefit of his health. He was survived
by his wife and eight children. His body was repatriated and he was buried at the
churchyard at Holdenby. Emily Dowager Lady Annaly died at Ebury Street on
22 Jan 1915 aged 84.
1 Luke White eldest son born 25 Feb 1857 married Hon Lilah Georgina Augusta
Constance Agar-Ellis in July 1857. Luke was with the Scots Guards and Lilah
was the daughter of Henry, third Viscount Clifden. He died at Holdenby House
on 15 Dec 1922.
2 Henry White born 4 Sep 1830. He entered the army in 1850 as ensign in the 68th
Foot. He attained the rank of captain in 1854 and served with his regiment in the
Crimea. He next served with the 13th Light Dragoons and died on 8 Feb 1861 at
Woodlands.
3 Eleanor (Ellen) Eliza White born circa 1833 married Lt Col Henry Holden on
10 Jun 1854. Henry was of Palace House, Lancaster. Eleanor died a widow on
29 Apr 1907 and was buried at Holdenby. She was survived by her two children.
4 George Frederick White third son born 1 Oct 1831 in London died on 4 Sep 1846 at
Rathcline. He was shooting duck on the Shannon and his pistol accidently
discharged.
5 Francis Samuel White born 17 Mar 1836 was a captain in the Royal Longford Rifles.
He drowned in a boating accident on Lough Gonna, Co Longford on 3 Apr 1855.
6 Charles William White fifth son born 9 Sep 1838 was educated at Harrow and entered
the Scots fusilier Guards in 1856. He was MP for the County of Tipperary from 1866
to 1874. He purchased Cahircon in 1878 and was Lord Lieutenant of Clare. He died
unmarried on 17 Oct 1890 in London.
7 Emily Beaujolais White born January 1844 married Hon Robert Wellesley Grosvenor
on 20 Jul 1867 at St Paul's Church, Wilton Place, Knightsbridge. Robert was the son of
Robert W Grosvenor, first Lord Ebury and the Hon Charlotte Crowley. The first Lord
Ebury died in 1893 and Robert became the 2nd Lord Ebury. He died in 1918 and
Emily died 18 Dec 1923 at Batchworth House, Rickmansworth survived by their four
children.
8 Robert White born 8 Dec 1844 at St Helens was due to enter the diplomatic services.
He died from diphtheria on 3 Mar 1866 at Hamburg.
