Joseph Henders born circa 1865 in Croydon/Dublin son of William Henders, a white smith.
It is possible that he is the Joseph Henders born on 28 Jul 1865 to William Henders and Jane
Whittaker in Carlow. He married Katie Murray on 30 May 1889 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin,
both were resident at 52 York Street, Dublin. Katie was the daughter of Patrick Murray, a
gardener. In 1901 Joseph and Caroline were living at Ballyknocken in Carlow in 1901 and
Joseph was working for Arthur McClintock as a butler. In 1911 Caroline and some of her
children were living at Farrenboley in Dundrum. She had been married 22 years (ie 1889)
and she had twelve children of whom seven had survived. Joseph at this time was working
as a butler for Cecil Fetherstonhaugh in Co Westmeath. In 1913 Kate was living at 12
Millmount Cottages, Dundrum and took Joseph to court for abandoning her and her children.
She gave evidence that Joseph had abandoned her six months previously and in the last three
years she had got scarcely any money from him, that two of her daughters were working in
the laundry and got 6s each a week and that Joseph earned £45 a year plus all found when
he worked for Captain Fetherston and then moved to Mr McClintock in Bagenalstown where
he was paid £32. Kate’s solicitor told the court that Joseph was living with a woman in
Swinford. In his defence Joseph said his wife was a good wife but had written to his employer
Captain Fetherston and destroyed his character and he was now out of work. He was
sentenced to 6 months hard labour in Mountjoy. By 1921 Caroline was living at Toxteth Park,
Liverpool where she died on 12 Aug 1923.

Ballsbridge Terrace died 5 Sep 1891 at Ballsbridge. His mother Kate the informant.
2 William Albert Henders born 15 May 1893 to Joseph Henders and Caroline Murray at
Georges Place Dublin. He was working for the Barton family as a Hall boy at Straffan
House in 1911. He was a butler at Sutton House, Howth and married Alice Hughes on
1 Oct 1913 at the RC Church in Balbriggan. Alice was the daughter of William Hughes, a
farmer. Alice died at Rutland Street on 28 May 1925.
William secondly married Mary A Gough on 2 Jun 1926 at the Pro Cathedra in Dublin.
Mary was living at Lusk and was the daughter of John Gough, an iron monger. He was
with the Royal Army Service Corps during the second World War and died 31 Jan 1942
at Jervis Street Hospital late of Hardwicke Street. He is buried at Glasnevin.
3 Caroline Cathleen Henders born 28 Jun 1894 at Coolfinn, Parsonstown, Queens County
to Joseph Henders and Caroline Kathleen Willoughby. She was living with her parents in
1901 and working for the Archer family at Beaufield in 1911. She married William J Burley
in West Bromwich in 1916 and they were living at St Austell, Cornwall in 1921 and were
still living there in 1939.
4 Ethel Ada Henders born 12 Sep 1895 at Castlehyde Lodge, Ballyhooley, Cork to Joseph
Henders and Caroline Willoughby. She married Richard Carroll in 1921 at Toxteth Park.
In 1962 her birth registration was changed by statutory declaration to read that her
mother’s name was Caroline Murray.
5 Charles Herbert Henders born 30 Mar 1900 at Rathvinden, Leighlinbridge Co Carlow. He
was living with his mother and working as a gardener at The Priory, St Michael’s in
Liverpool in 1921. He married Gertrude M Eccles in 1922 at Toxteth. They were living
at 2 Basil Close, Liverpool with their three children in 1939.
6 John Joseph (Herbert J J) Henders born 23 Feb 1902 at Rathvinden, Leighlinbridge, Co
Carlow. He was living with his mother and working as a gardener at The Priory, St
Michael’s in Liverpool in 1921. He married Florence May Deakin in 1930 and they were
living at 10 Chatsworth Avenue, Liverpool with their four children in 1939. Florence
pregnant and suffering from depression was charged with shoplifting in 1940 and was
sentenced to six months in prison.
7 Grace Maude (Maude Grage) Henders born 13 Feb 1904 at Rathvinden, Leighlinbridge, Co
Carlow to Joseph Henders and Caroline Willoughby. In 1921 she was a clerk living with
her mother in 1921. She died unmarried in Liverpool in 1952.
8 Arthur Robert Henders born 9 Sep 1906 at Sallins Road, Co Kildare. Arthur was living at
Millmount cottages and wore surgical boots with supports in 1916. He was living with
his mother and working as a shop assistant in 1921. He married Mary Croughan in
Liverpool in 1936. He was a grocer's shop assistant living at 14 Norwich Road, Liverpool in
1939.
