Michael Hackett

Michael Hackett a solicitor of Sackville Street. He married (possibly Elizabeth Bently in 1828).
He had lands at Lusk, Corduff and Barnaslatty and they lived at Brooklawn, Chapelizod from
1830. Michael died 9 Nov 1855.

2 Pierce Hackett born circa 1841 died at Brooklawn on 15 Jul 1863.
3 Walter Hackett born circa 1838. He was a minor and married Honoria on 9 Apr 1856
at St Mary’s Dublin. Honoria was the daughter of Patrick Leahy, a teacher and was
resident at Mary Street. He was a captain in the Galway Militia and was a captain in
the Oxfordshire Regiment in 1868. They lived at Brooklawn, Co Dublin after they married
until the court ordered the sale of the estate for the life of Walter Hackett in 1875. They
moved to Ormond Quay. Honoria died at Gloucester Street on 16 Jan 1880 and was
buried at Glasnevin. Walter died on 5 Apr 1904 at Mountjoy Square and was buried with
his wife.
1 Michael Charles Hackett only son born 23 Sep 1856 at Brooklawn in County Dublin
baptised at Palmerstown. He joined the army and attained the rank of Colonel
commanding the 4th Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He married Maria
Imelda Holohan on 21 Apr 1879 at St Mary’s, Marlboro Street on the 21 Apr 1879.
Maria was the widow of Edward Holohan and the daughter of John Kavanagh, a
merchant and was living at North Great Georges Street. She had three children by
her previous marriage. They lived at Rutland Square before moving to Airfield in
1895. Michael fought at Orange River Colonet in 1902 and was awarded the
Queen’s medal and three clasps after the campaign. They moved to Beooklawn,
Palmerstown on 44 acres in 1905 having spent a few months in the Shelburne hotel
while the house was refurbished. Michael was appointed master of the Galway
‘Blazers’ in 1906. Michael was a JP for Galway and had a residence at Eyre Square.
He was the proprietor of the Galway and the Clifon Railway Hotels and was also a
member of the Galway Harbour Commission. Maria died late of Brooklawn,
Palmerstown on 4 Jan 1922 aged 80 and was buried at Glasnevin. Michael died on
2 Aug 1933 at Galway Central Hospital and left 4k in personal estate. He was buried
at Glasnevin.
1 Mary Ethel Maud (May) Hackett only daughter born 11 Jul 1880 at 2 Seapoint
Terrace, Clontarf. She married Thomas Cadell Norris at St George Hanover
Square in 1916. They had at least two children and May died in July 1944 in
London.
2 Walter Ralph Basil Charles Pierce Hackett only son born 14 Jun 1885 at
Rutland Square. He was educated at Beaumont School, Old Windsor and
married Eleanor McCausland in 1907. Eleanor was the eldest daughter of the
late McCausand, DL of Drenagh, Londonderry and the Hon Mrs McCausland
of Furnace, Co Wicklow. He enlisted on the outbreak of war. He received a
lieutenant’s commission in the Royal West Kent Regiment, and appointed
Regimental Transport Officer to the Brigade. He was killed in action on
4 Oct 1916 and remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
4 Catherine (Kate) Hackett born circa 1843 married John Walsh on 6 Oct 1868 at
Palmerstown Church. John was with the Military Train and Horse Transport.
