William Grattan born circa 1790 married Anne Cathcart on 3 Apr 1818 at St Mary's Church,
Dublin. Anne was the youngest daughter of Rolleston Nassau Cathcart, attorney of Dublin
and his wife Charlotte Wade. William was a farmer and shopkeeper/grocer of Edenderry. He
was also treasurer of the Edenderry Dispensary. His sister Jane Dickson died aged 59 in 1856.
William died 21 July 1863 at Edenderry, Kings County. Anne died 24 May 1882 same place and
both are buried at Carbury.
1 John Rolleston Grattan 1st son born circa 1820 entered Kings Inns.
2 Charlotte Eliza Grattan eldest daughter died in April 1841 at Edenderry and is buried
at Carbury.
3 Nassau Cathcart Grattan died in 1842 and is buried at Carbury.
4 Marianne Grattan second daughter born circa 1823 married William Watson of Ballinrath,
Kings County on 16 Feb 1848. William died 24 Jan 1869 at Ballinrath aged 52. Marianne
died at Edenderry on 29 Jul 1902.
5 Eliza Grattan married Joseph Russell in November 1841 at Edenderry. She died at
Edenderry on 17 Jan 1852 and is buried at Carbury.
6 Richard Grattan second son born circa 1827. He was a miller and married Anna
Goodbody on 6 Apr 1858 at Rosenallis Church. Richard died 16 Apr 1863 aged 34 at
Lunville Lodge, Edenderry.
1 Richard Grattan born circa 1859. As last surviving child he died of scarlatina on
21 Nov 1865 at Haddington Road.
Anna secondly married William Romans a civil engineer of Northumberland Road in
1869.
7 William Grattan born circa 1828.
8 Robert Grattan born circa 1831 fourth son of William Grattan, a farmer of Edenderry,
Kings County. He was an outfitter of Grafton Street when he married Matilda Bolton at
St Anne’s, Dublin on 31 Dec 1850. Matilda was resident at 24 Clare Street and was the
youngest daughter of John Bolton late of Grafton Street. Robert was an outfitter and
shirt maker of 14 Nassau Street and was appointed shirtmaker and hosier to Hugh
Montgomerie, the Earl of Eglinton and Winton in 1858. He was later hosier to the
Lord Lieutenant. They were living at Bellevue, Merrion by 1862. Matilda died
25 Sep 1866 aged 37 at Belle Vue, Merrion and is buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Eliza Grattan eldest daughter born 16 Jul 1852 at 14 Nassau Street. She married
Frederick Augustus Madden at Donnybrook Church on 22 Jan 1874. Frederick was
the son of James F Madden of Dublin.
2 Son Grattan born 5 Aug 1853 at Nassau Street.
3 Matilda Grattan infant daughter died 14 Nassau Street on 6 Nov 1856 and is
buried at Mount Jerome.
4 Charlotte Annie Grattan born circa 1858 married Harry Watson on 6 May 1881 at
Philadelphia. Harry was the eldest son of the late William Watson of Ballinrath,
Edenderry, Kings County.
5 Matilda Adelaide Grattan born 31 Mar 1859 at Nassau Street. She was a music
teacher and married Henry Clay Herr in 1890 in Philadelphia.
6 Frances Victoria Gratton born 15 Jun 1861 married Joseph Dobbs on 3 Mar 1881 at
St Anne’s Dublin. Frances was living at Nassau Street and Joseph, a hosier of
Abbeyleix was the son of James Dobbs, a farmer. Frances moved to Philadelphia
where Joseph died circa 1889.
She was a seamstress and secondly married Usher Ralston in 1893.
7 Son Grattan born at Belle Vue 14 May 1862.
8 Robert Colley Grattan born 24 Aug 1864 at Bellevue married Ada Gothard in 1904.
They were living in Devon, Exeter in 1911 with their two daughters. Robert died
in 1954 in Devon.
Robert secondly married Anne Gough on 21 Oct 1867 at Kingstown Registrar’s Office.
Anne was the daughter of Hugh Gough, gardener of Woodbine Cottage, Merrion Road
(gatelodge to Nutley Park) and his wife Mary. The lease of Bellevue on 5 acres was for sale
in 1878. Robert died 5 Jul 1879 at Nassau Street, Dublin. William Grattan of the same
address the informant. He is buried with his first wife at Mount Jerome. Anne died
8 Dec 1879 at Nutley, Donnybrook aged 35 and is buried at Deansgrange. Her parents
were later buried with her.
9 Henry Nassau Grattan born 14 Aug 1868 at Belle Vue baptised at Booterstown
RC Church.
10 Anna Edith Grattan born 23 Sep 1869 at Belle Vue, Merrion baptised at
Booterstown. She married Philip Ambrose Swift in Birmingham in 1910. Philip
was a clerk with a coffin furniture manufacturer and they were living at Acocks
Green Birmingham in 1911. Edith died at the Accident Hospital in Birmingham
on 12 Oct 1955, probate to her husband Philip.
11 Henrietta Josephine Grattan second daughter born 17 Sep 1871 at Bellevue
baptised at Booterstown. She became a nun with the Sisters of Mary Passion in
1897 and as Sr Mary Philip she died in December 1901 and is buried at Tonge
Cemetery, Manchester.
12 Richard George Grattan born 14 Jul 1874 at Bellevue baptised at Booterstown.
9 George Grattan born circa 1830. As fifth surviving son he died a bachelor on 22 Oct 1892
at Edenderry.
10 Emily Grattan born circa 1835 died unmarried in 1909 at Edenderry.
11 Fanny Grattan sixth daughter born circa 1836 died from consumption unmarried on
18 Jul 1868 at Edenderry and is buried at Carbury.
12 Anne Jane Grattan died a spinster 18 Sep 1898 at Edenderry, funeral to Carbury Church.
13 Matthew Henry Grattan youngest son born circa 1839 graduated from the Royal College
of Surgeons in 1861. He was a doctor resident at Chipping Ongar, Essex when he married
Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hipwell on 3 Feb 1864 at Edenderry Church, Kings County. Lizzie was the
eldest daughter of the late John T Hipwell of Edenderry. They were living in Ongar with
their six children in 1881. Lizzie died in February 1912 at Ongar aged 71. Michael died in
November 1923.
1 Henry William Grattan born 11 Apr 1872 in Ongar. He was educated at St Laurence
College, Ramsgate, and the London Hospital, he qualified in 1894 and commissioned
Surgeon- Lieutenant on 29 Jul 1895 and retired 26 Dec 1921.

William Grattan born circa 1790 married Anne Cathcart on 3 Apr 1818 at St Mary's Church,
