John Gore Jones of Rockley Lodge, Johnsport, Co Sligo only son of John Gore Jones of Johnspoint.
He married Letitia Elizabeth (Eliza) Sheridan in October 1818. Letitia was the daughter of the late
Charles Francis Sheridan, Secretary at War, and the niece of playwright and politician the Rt Hon
Richard Brinsley Sheridan. John was a JP of Sligo and resident magistrate for 50 years. Letitia
died 10 Jan 1852 and was buried at St Mary’s, Templemore. John died 6 Jan 1879 at Templemore
and was buried with his wife.
1 John Gore Jones first son born 20 Sep 1819 at Kildare. He graduated Trinity and was
admitted Kings Inns. He was a barrister working for Gethlin & Walker solicitors, and
editor of the Sligo Chronicle for a number of years. He married Eliza Gillman Nagle on
16 Sep 1845 at Holy Trinity Church, Cork City. Eliza was the daughter of Edward Gillman
Nagle, a farmer. He was appointed income tax collector for Northern District of the City
of Dublin with an office and had an office at Dame Street in 1853, his father acted as
one of his sureties (3k) and he had a salary of £250 pa. He was accused of bribing the
electorate in Sligo in 1854 but it was not proven. His private residence was Littleton in
Stillorgan in 1858 but he went missing the same year but later it as discovered he had
left the country possibly in default and gone to Brisbane. John was elected MP for
Warwick at the resulting by-election on 4 Feb 1862 and again for 1865 to 1866. He was
appointed Crown Prosecutor for the Metropolitan District in 1862, which office he held
at the time of his death. He was engaged for the defence in the Mackenzie murders
(the trial of Thomas Jobs Griffin for the murder of troopers Power and Cahill at the
Mackenzie River) but died before it came to trial. He died 27 Feb 1868 at Rivers Leigh,
Brisbane survived by his wife. Elizabeth died 27 Feb 1874 at Summerhill Terrace, Bangor.

Queensland in 1936.

her uncle William Gore Jones in 1871. She died at 11 May 1880 at Rockley the
residence of her uncle Charles Gore Jones.
2 Anna Maria eldest daughter born circa 1824 died in Dublin in March 1837.
3 Arabella Louisa Jones second daughter born circa 1830 married Charles Sheridan
Salterthwaite, of Hyde Park on 10 Aug 1854 at Thurles Parish Church. Charles was the son
of Charles Salterhwaite. They lived at Lancaster Lodge, Roehampton.
1 Nanette Letitia Salterthwaite eldest daughter married Benjamin Wyld in January 1889.
4 Charles F Sheridan Gore-Jones second son born circa 1820 was appointed a magistrate for Sligo
in 1843. Of Rockley Lodge married Elizabeth Anne Groves on 2 Jan 1856 at St Peter’s Church,
Dublin. Elizabeth was the daughter of the late Rev Edward Groves of Dublin. They were living
at Rockley in 1901. Elizabeth died 26 Mar 1909 aged 83 at 33 Mount Merrion Avenue and was
buried at Deansgrange. Charles a widower living with his niece Eleanor Groves at Mount
Merrion Avenue. He died 7 Feb 1912 at 33 Mount Merrion Avenue and was buried with his wife.
5 William Gore Jones born 12 Mar 1826 in Sligo. He was a commander in the Royal Navy. He
served in the New Zealand War 1845/6, and in the place sea during the Crimean 1854/5. He
was of Rockley, Co Sligo and married Arabella Meliora (Bella) Furnell (a minor) on
29 Nov 1855 at Bray Church. Arabella was the third daughter of Thomas Furnell of
Heathmount, Co Clare. William was based on the HM gun vessel Assurance and Bella died on
9 May 1856 of decline at 26 Orsett Terrace, Hyde Park aged 18.
He secondly married Agnes Spankie on 27 Jan 1858 at Trinity Church, Paddington. Agnes was
the daughter of Mr Robert Spankie, MP for Finsbury and HM Serjeant at Law. He took command
of HMS Princess Royal, Flagship of Sir George King, in 1864. William was living at 116 Sloane
Street, London and was appointed Commander-in-Chief, East Indies Station in 1879. He retired
in 1887 and was created a CB. Admiral Gore Jones CB died on 28 May 1888 at Kensington.
6 Letitia Sheridan Gore Jones born circa 1829 living at 25, Cleveland Gardens, Barnes, Richmond
upon Thames in 1881. She died a spinster on 30 Jan 1895 at Northumberland Road, Dublin.
7 Agnes A Elizabeth Gore-Jones born circa 1835 married the Rev Phineas Hunt on 1 Aug 1861 at
Thurles. Rev Phineas was the son of Phineas Hunt. Phineas was rector of St Kevin's, Harrington
Street. They lived in Sligo 1911 and had nine children of whom seven were still alive. Phineas
and Agnes died at Rockley in 1920.
8 Thomas Sheridan Gore Jones youngest son born 3 Feb 1837 killed in action on the Punjab
frontier on 18 Nov 1864.
