Joseph Goff born 1745 son of Joseph Goff and Elizbeth Unthank, Quakers of Roscommon.
He was a flour merchant of Bride Street. He was the cousin of Joseph Fade Goff (son of
Jacob Goff). He married Sarah Clibborn on 5 Jun 1787 at the Friends Meeting House in
Wicklow. Sarah was the daughter of George Clibborn of Granby Row. Sarah died 9 Oct 1803
and was buried at Stillorgan. Joseph lived at Newtown Park and their house was robbed on
several occasions. In 1819 the coach house was broken into and coats stolen, in 1820 the
lead from the green house was taken and 270lbs of butter were stolen from the dairy in
1827. He was a founder member of the Bank of Ireland, and of the Dublin Chamber of
Commerce. He was also a member of the Ouzel Galley Society, and of the Kildare Place
Society. He was a director of the Bank of Ireland 1787 to 1827, and governor 1810 to 1812.
On 10 Dec 1812 he was proposed for membership of the Royal Dublin Society by Nathaniel
Sneyd and Reverend William O’Connor, and was elected early in 1813. His addresses were 3
Mountjoy Square, and Newtown Park, Blackrock which was sold in 1833. Joseph purchased
land in Tyrone (Killymoon) from James Stewart shortly before his death, he also had land in
King's County and north of the Liffey. Joseph died 6 Apr 1833 at Newtown Park. In his will
he requested that he be buried with his wife at Stillorgan after a simple funeral. He trustees
and executors were George Drevar and John Leland Maquay.
1 Joseph Goff eldest son born circa 1788 married Jane Stannus on 29 Jun 1816 at St George’s
Church. Jane was the fourth daughter of the late Thomas Stannus of Portarlington. They
had at least nine children. He was a JP for Co Tyrone and Co Dublin. Joseph was High
Sheriff of Co Tyrone in 1842 and later DL of Co Dublin. They lived at Hale Park, Salisbury
from circa 1837. Jane died 3 Jun 1874 at Hale Park. Joseph died on 24 Apr 1875 at Hale
Park and his executor was his brother George. He left 350k in personal estate.
1 Joseph Goff eldest son was born on 28 Oct 1817 at Mountjoy Square. He married
Lady Adelaide Henrietta Louisa Hortense (Adela) Knox, daughter of Thomas Knox,
2nd Earl of Ranfurly and Mary Juliana Stuart, on 26 Sep 1850 at St James’ Church,
Dover. Joseph died on 26 Dec 1872 at Burton Grange, Herts and was survived by
seven children. Adela died in 1911 and left 84k in personal estate.
2 Thomas Goff second son bon circa 1819 took Holy orders. He died at Hale House
on 20 Jul 1843.
3 Sarah Jane Goff eldest born circa 1821 died at Hale Park on 17 May 1839.
4 Caroline Goff born circa 1822 died at Hale House on 29 Mar 1842.
5 Sophia Goff, eldest surviving daughter married Charles Scott Plummer of
Sunderland Hall, Selkirk on 21 Jan 1857 at St George’s, Hanover Square.
6 Robert Goff second son married Une Cameron Barclay Lautour on 19 Jul 1859 at
St George’s, Hanover Square London. Une was the daughter of General Lautour CB,
Colonel of the 3rd Light Dragoons.
7 Rev George J Goff youngest son officiated at the marriage of his brother in 1859. He
died 19 Jan 1867 at Torquay.
8 Eliza Goff born circa 1828 died a spinster in a fire at her father’s house in Cumberland
Place, Hyde Park in July 1863.
9 Trevor Goff joined the army and attained the rank of Colonel. He was left property
in Ireland by his father in 1875 and died 17 Nov 1888 at Southampton.
2 Eliza Goff only daughter died at Barcelona in 1815.
3 John Goff second son mentioned his father’s will.
4 Richard Goff third son graduated from Christ Church, Oxford and admitted Lincoln’s Inns
in 1822 mentioned in his father’s will.
5 William Goff fourth son born circa 1799 died 2 Oct 1849 at Weimar.
6 George Goff fifth son born circa 1800 graduated Trinity was admitted Kings Inns in 1821.
He married Elizabeth Catherine Holmes on 9 Mar 1832 in Berne, Switzerland. He was
his brother Joseph’s executor in 1875 and lived in Lucerne, Switzerland. Elizabeth died
2 Mar 1880 aged 77 at Lausanne and George died same place on 17 Sep 1880.
7 Robert Goff sixth and youngest son baptised at St George’s on 1 Nov 1801. He graduated
Trinity was admitted Kings Inns in 1821. He died 27 Mar 1866 at Rome.
