Anthony Gilholy* born circa 1761 son of Andrew Gilholy of Tipperary graduated Trinity College
and received a degree in medicine in July 1789. He married Mary Wilson on 10.04.1787 at St
Peter’s Church, Dublin. He was a licentiate of the College of Physicians in 1795 and fellow in
1798. He was one of the physicians that worked at the charitable dispensary to the parishes
of St Thomas, St Georges and St Mary’s parishes. He was appointed censor and vice president
of the College of Physicians on St Luke’s Day 1803 and president in 1817. They were living at
Henrietta Street in 1805, Bray from 1812 to 1815 and at 8 Upper Saville Street in 1818.
Anthony was Deputy State Physician, Ireland and died circa 25 Oct 1821 at Seapoint House.
He was survived by his widow and eleven children and is buried at Clontarf. Maria was in the
insolvent’s court in 1823 and was discharged in 1826. She was living at Capel Street in 1832
when she applied for the position of matron with one of the newly established lunatic asylums.
Mary received a pension which was £23 in 1829 and £21 pa in 1838. She died circa 6 Jan 1840
at North Cumberland Street and is buried with her husband.
1 Henry Constantine Gilholy advertised the taking over of a school at Seapoint
conducted by himself under the superintendence of his father. He was running the
school there in 1822 after the death of his father with W H Stack. By 1823 he had a
new school at Dundrum. He was living at Aungier Street and married Mary Reilly on
16 Jan 1838 at St Peter’s Church. Henry, formerly of Angier Street, then of Rathmines,
proprietor of a boarding school in Harcourt Street was bankrupt in 1839. He was
working at a seminary in Williamstown from 1846 to 1850 and Master of the Cashel
Parochial School by 1868. Henry died circa 01.02.1870 at his residence, John Street,
Cashel. Mary, late of Cashel was sued and arrested as an insolvent debtor at Galway
in 1871. Mary died on 11.06.1890 aged 74 years at 17 Margaret Square, Newry.
1 Henry Constantine Gilholy eldest son. He was a Professor of Music in Tralee
and married Diana Sarah Turpin circa 27.01.1869 at Ballymoden Church,
Bandon. Diana was the 2nd daughter of George Turpin of Bandon and
granddaughter of late Richards Williams of Macroom. Diana died 19 May 1870
in Bandon, Cork aged 25. He was organist at Cashel Cathedral and was appointed
to St Augustine’s Church in 1881.
1 Henry Constantine Gilholy born 14.04.1870 at South Main Street, Bandon.
It is thought he emigrated to America in 1893.
2 Edward Gilholy 2nd son born circa 1850 a pupil at Dundalk School in 1868.
Edward a schoolmaster was living in Berkshire in 1881 and died in 1918 aged 69
years in Blackburn.
3 Isabella Gilholy born circa 1857 was a governess. She died unmarried at
Bloomsbury, Terenure on 16 May 1887, her mother Mary the informant.
4 Barry Maxwell Gilholy born circa 1858 in Cashel, Tipperary was the organist of St
Mary’s Church, Newry from 1878. In 1901 he was unmarried and living at Margaret
Square. In 1907 he went to the Parish Church, Lismore. Leaving there he went to
Bristol where he died in 1926.
5 Kate Gilholy youngest daughter was a teacher and died at Bangher Street Cahir on
23 Apr 1874.
2 Barry Maxwell Gilholy born circa 1793 joined the Indian Army. He married Elizabeth
Clements in 1822 in India and they had at least seven children. Barry died in 1860 in
India.
3 Mary Ann Gilholy* married William Harnett Stack in Dublin on 6 Jul 1822. William was
government reporter to some of the leading journals in London and died in Cork in April
1830.
4 William Gilholy of Dublin born circa 1806 was a linendraper of Francis Street and insolvent
in 1852. He was a linen merchant of 76 Church Street and married Eleanor Louisa Caldwell
on 15.09.1853 at St Michan’s Church, Dublin. Eleanor was the daughter of John Caldwell.
William of Britain Street died circa 13.03.1859 aged 53 years and is buried at St Mary’s
Churchyard.
1 John Walter Gilholy baptised on 25.05.1856 at St Mary’s Church. John a clerk for
Eason’s married Sophia Sarah Lear on 10.06.1897 at the Wesleyan Chapel,
Shaftesbury, Dorset. Sophia was the eldest daughter of Thomas Lear. John died on
02.11.1934 at 4 St Rumbold’s Road, Shaftesbury.
Eleanor married secondly John McConnell a Professor of Music son of Thomas McConnell on
24.11.1862 at the Registrar’s Office, Dublin. Eleanor died on 27.08.1917 of 134 Rathmines.

5 Louisa Gilholy youngest daughter born circa 1817 married James C Murphy circa April 1837.
James was the younger son of Surgeon Murphy of Carrickmacross. James died 6 May 1837
at 9 Upper Ormond Quay of fever.
Louisa secondly married Edward Townley Hardman, Edward was a veterinary surgeon and
the eldest son of Townley Blackwood Hardman of Drogheda. His brother was Townley
William Hardman. Louisa was living at Booterstown when she carried out administration
on the estates of Anthony and Maria Gilholy in 1849. She died on 6 Feb 1873 at Mornington,
Drogheda.
Edward secondly married widow Annie Elizbeth Gore Kelly in 1874 and died in Fair Street,
Drogheda on 26 May 1889 aged 73. His nephew Hunt Walsh Hardman his executor.
