Symes family, stockbrokers of Dame Street
George Symes born circa 1798 son of Glascott Symes. He was of Killester when he married
Catherine Symes on 17 Dec 1821 at Carnew Church. Catherine was the eldest daughter of
the late James Symes of Coolboy, Co Wicklow.
He secondly married Ellen Morton on 5 Sep 1828 at Clontarf Church. He was a stock broker
of 4 Foster Place and living in Killester in 1829 when he was robbed at gunpoint on his way
home from work. By 1836 he was a partner in the firm of Bruce & Symes operating from 37
Dame Street. Ellen died 18 Aug 1848 at Bonnybrook.
1 Mary Chambey Symes baptised 28 July 1829 at Clontarf died unmarried in Galway on
4 Feb 1897 and left 7k in personal estate.
2 Glascott Symes eldest son baptised 23 July 1830 at Clontarf. He married Constance
Hardy on 27 Jul 1858 at St Andrew’s Church. Dublin. Constance was the eldest daughter
of George Frederick Hardy. Glascott, a stockbroker of 37 Dame Street died at Ashfield
on 29 Nov 1868. Constance died a widow at West Kensington Park, London on
24 Oct 1888. She is buried at Mount Jerome.

3 Alicia Anne Symes second daughter married Benjamin Joseph Wilson of Roebuck on
11 Jun 1856 at Coolock Church.
Alicia, a widow secondly married Dr James Symes on 6 Oct 1859 at Kiltegan Parish
Church, Co Wicklow.
4 Catherine Symes baptised 10 Sep 1834 at Clontarf. Kate, third daughter married John
Pim Watson of Galway on 7 Jun 1855 at Coolock Church.
5 Georgiana Symes baptised 11 April 1838 at Clontarf. She married William Hone of
Paulbeg, Co Wicklow on 7 Sep 1871 at Coolock Church. William was the son of Addison
Hone.
He married Margaret Brooke on 11 Jun 1851 at St Catherine's Tranmere, Cheshire. Margaret
was the daughter of Henry Daniel Brooke. George died in Bonnybrook, Artane on 1 Aug 1870.
He left 23k in personal estate, probate to his wife Margaret and his brother Gascott. Margaret
lived at Brookvale Stillorgan from 1874 to 1876 and by 1881 Margaret was living in Killiney. She
died at Marino Lodge, Killiney on 8 Oct 1910 aged 88.
6 Lucinda Brooke Symes born circa 1856. She married Thomas Arthur Bell on 1 Dec 1881
in Killiney and they had at least one daughter. Thomas died on 28 Oct 1888.
Lucinda secondly married John Frederick Gill on 24 Nov 1892 at Holy Trinity Church. John
a Deemster of the Isle of Man died in 1899 and Lucinda was widow living with her
mother in Killiney in 1901.
