Fry family of Oatland, Stillorgan
William Fry of 7 Nicholas Street and Harold’s Cross. A Mrs Margaret Fry died at Harolds Cross
in 1802 aged 81 (possibly his mother). It is thought that he was married to Esther Fry (a mixed
marriage). William was treasurer to the parish school of St Nicholas Within with an address
of 39 Nicholas Street in 1799. He died circa January 1803.
1 Thomas Fry eldest son born circa 1775. He succeeded to his father’s business in
February 1803 on the death of his father. This was a livery lace, fringe and tassel
manufactory of 7 Nicholas Street. He married Anna Dawson Lawrence in April 1803.
In 1805 he took his brother John into partnership and they moved the business to 30
Dame Street. He took George Nesbitt into partnership in 1808 and they traded as Fry
and Nesbitt until 1820. He took a lease on Oatland, Stillorgan the same year. He put
his residence Oatland up for sale or let in 1819 perhaps due to the death of his wife.
1 William Fry born circa 1804 married Evelina Brassington on 29 Jan 1829 at St Peters.
Evelina was the third daughter of William Brassington of Mount Street. William and
his brothers John and Henry took over the business in 1831 on the death of their
father. By 1835 they were trading as Messrs Fry & Co advertising that: Besides the
manufacture of poplin for dresses and ties, Messrs. Fry & Co. manufacture poplin
damask for window hangings, tabaret for the lining of motors and carriages and for
furniture covering, silk fringes, carriage laces, silk ropes and tassels. They moved to
Westmoreland Street in 1846 and were producing silks and poplins on their looms.
The supplied the soft furnishing for the new steamship the ‘Viceroy’ the same year.
In 1849 they opened a manufactory at Kevin Street and manufactured furniture.
William was elected councillor of the South Dublin ward in 1850. Alderman William
Fry died 17 Jan 1857 at 28 Pembroke Place. Evelina died on 3 Jan 1875 at Clyde Road
aged 71. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Thomas Fry eldest son born circa 1830 married Meta Elizabeth Boyd on
20 Aug 1856 at Ballinahinch. Meta was the daughter of the Rev Charles Boyd.
Thomas was the city treasurer died 11 Sep 1892 at Victoria Terrace,
Rathmines. He was buried in mount Jerome. He was survived by four
daughters and two sons, one of whom had settled in Tennessee.
2 Maria Louisa Fry eldest daughter born circa 1834. She was a music teacher
and died unmarried on 11 Feb 1907 at the Royal Hospital Donnybrook. She
was buried at Mount Jerome.
3 William Henry Fry youngest son married Sophia Herber Boyd on 20 Aug 1856
at Ballinahinch. Sophia was the daughter of the Rev Charles Boyd.
4 Anna Maria Fry married the Rev James Anderson Carr, curate of Carlow on
8 May 1861.
5 Alice Fry died at Bray on 25 Aug 1862 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
6 Eveline Jane Fry born circa 1842 died a spinster 19 May 1883 (epilepsy) late of
Clyde Road and was buried at Mount Jerome.
7 Clara Jane Fry born circa 1843 was a music teacher. She died unmarried on
20 Aug 1917 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
8 Eliza Esther Fry born circa 1846 died at Raglan Road in 1867 and as buried at
Mount Jerome.
9 Esther Sophia Fry married William Stephenson on 3 Jul 1884 at Dublin
Registrar’s Office. Both died in 1927 and were buried at Mount Jerome.
2 John Fry married born circa 1808. John and his brothers William and Henry took
over the business in 1831 on the death of their father. He was of Dame Street
and married Louisa Brassington on 15 Jan 1841 at St Peter’s. Louisa was the
daughter of William Brassington of Rathgar Road. They lived at Woodlands,
Ranelagh. John died 25 Mar 1874 and left 16k in personal estate. Louisa died 1905
aged 90. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Thomas Fry eldest son born circa 1842 graduated Trinity. He married
Esther Maria Clarkson on 7 Sep 1865 at St Peter’s Church, Belsize Park,
London. Esther was the eldest daughter of Thomas Clarkson of St John’s
Wood, London.
2 William Henry (Willie) Fry born circa 1844 died unmarried on 13 May 1922
and was buried at Mount Jerome.
3 John Fry born circa 1846 died (epilepsy) unmarried on 25 Apr 1879 at the
Steward Institution and was buried at Mount Jerome.
4 Maria A Fry eldest daughter born circa 1847 died at Woodlands on
7 Jun 1856.
5 Anne Dawson Laurence Fry born 20 Dec 1850 died on Jun 1852 aged 3 at
Rathgar.
6 Stillborn daughter Fry at Cullenswood Avenue on 28 Aug 1854.

was buried at Mount Jerome.

28 May 1875 and was buried at Mount Jerome.
3 Anna Maria Fry second daughter born circa 1810 died 21 Sep 1824.
4 Thomas Fry born circa 1810. He was of Dame Street and married Martha Ada
Boswell on 3 May 1842 at Rathfarnham. Martha was the daughter of Joseph
Boswell and Martha Lamb. Thomas died 14 Feb 1843 aged 33 at Camden Street.
Martha died 9 Mar 1863. Both are buried at mount Jerome.
5 Henry Lawrence Fry born circa 1814. He was living at Melrose Villa, Rathgar and
married Rebecca Mary Boswell on 2 Jul 1844 at St Peters. He was a partner in
Messrs Fry & Co and they lived at Cullenswood House and later Ashfield House,
Harold's Cross. Henry died 3 Nov 1869 and left 10k in personal estate. Rebecca
died 22 Apr 1896 aged 72. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Thomas Joseph Fry elder son born circa 1846 died 18 Jan 1888 and was
buried at Mount Jerome.
2 Marion Fry elder daughter married William J Reade. She died 17 Feb 1901
at the Ark, Foxrock and was buried at Mount Jerome.
Thomas secondly married Alicia Brassington in July 1821 at St George’s Church, Dublin.
Alicia was the second daughter of William Brassington. Thomas died on 28 Sep 1831.
Alicia died a widow on 22 May 1847 aged 47 at Rathgar.
2 John Fry joined in the firm in 1805.
William Fry & Co re-upholstered furniture in Dublin Castle in a blue fabric and supplied them
with gilded furniture in the 1860s. The firm also had the patronage of Queen Victoria who
purchased fabric and in 1870 fabric was purchased for the trousseau of Princess Louisa. In
September 1880 it was announced that the firm was restructuring and reorganising but in
March 1881, the stock in trade of William Fry and Co was but up for sale by the Trust Estate
through Craig Gardener and was sold to Arnott’s of Henry Street.
