Francis Smyth born circa 1813 son of Adam and Catherine Smyth of Great Britain Street. He
married Margaret McEvoy on 13.08.1837 at St Andrew’s, Westland Row. Francis was an umbrella,
stick and parasol manufacturer of Essex Quay. Margaret died 08.10.1857 at 24 Essex Quay and
is buried at Prospect Cemetery.
1 Kate Smyth eldest daughter married James Connolly of Parsonstown at St Andrew’s Church
on 06.10.1863.
2 Francis Smyth born circa 1848 married Mary Monica Carroll of Dalkey at the Roman
Catholic Church of the Assumption in Dalkey on 23.08.1880 Mary was the daughter of James
Carroll of Tudor House, Dalkey, coal merchant of Brunswick Street. Francis an umbrella
manufacturer died on 08.03.1890 aged 42 years at Mount Pelier, Dalkey. Informant John
Carroll, probate to widow Mary. He is buried at Glasnevin. Mary secondly married widower
Peter Young on 04.10.1904 at Berkeley Street Church.
1 Ethelrida Mary Josephine Smyth born 01.06.1884 at Tudor House, Dalkey. She was living
with her mother and step father at Eccles Street in 1911. As only surviving child she
married James Arthur Hanrahan of Hammond, South Australia on 30.04.1913 at Berkeley
Street Church. They sailed for Australia on 12.05.1913.
2 Constance Smyth born 11.03.1886 at Mount Pelier, Dalkey died 13.09.1897 at Eccles Street.
Francis, a widower married secondly Anna Maria Hampson on 26.04.1860 at St Michael & Johns Church,
Dublin. Anna Maria was the only daughter of Robert and Caroline Hampson. By 1876 the Umbrella
business was at 75 Grafton Street and they had moved to Old Merrion. Anna Maria died on 07.07.1879
aged 48 years at her residence Bellevue, Old Merrion and is buried at Glasnevin. Francis died on the
anniversary of his first wife’s death at 82 Harcourt Street on 08.10.1883, his son Francis the informant.
He is buried at Glasnevin.
3 Caroline Maria Smyth baptised on 03.03.1861 at St Michael & John of 24 Essex Quay. She
married Charles Warren Redmond on 20.02.884 at St Kevin’s Church, Harrington Street. Charles
was the only surviving son of James Redmond of Trimleston Lodge, Roebuck.
4 William Robert Smyth born circa 1862 a cutler of 12 Summerhill Parade married Ophelia Pitman
a mantle maker of Linen Hall Barracks, Militia Quarters daughter of John Pitman a Trumpet
Major on 15.02.1886 at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Berkeley Road, Dublin. The family
moved to Belfast before 1890. William an umbrella maker died 03.06.1907 aged 48 years at
the South Dublin Union Workhouse of Cuffe Street, Dublin. Ophelia lived at 27 Clanbrassil
Street in 1911 with Mabel and John. Ophelia died on 28.08.1939 aged 65 years at St Kevin’s
Hospital, Dublin late Blackhall Place.
1 Agnes Ophelia Smyth born 30.12.1886 at 3 Lullymore Terrace, Grand Canal. Agnes
died of scarlet fever on 25.08.1890 at 52 Annalee Street, Belfast.
2 Mabel Frances Smyth born 16.10.1888 at Lullymore Terrace, Grand Canal. Mabel living
with her mother in Clanbrassil Street in 1911. Mabel married Christopher Walsh of 48
Church Street son of James Walsh on 15.10.1911 at the Roman Catholic Church of St
Kevin on Harrington Street.
3 Francis William Smyth born 11.08.1890 at 52 Annalee Street, Belfast. Francis a soldier
of 6 South Great George’s Street married Elizabeth O’Neill, a shirt maker of 3 Long Lane,
daughter of John O’Neill on 10.08.1916 at St Kevin’s Roman Catholic Church, Harrington
Street, Dublin. Elizabeth died on 05.07.1923 aged 30 years at 18 Iveagh Buildings.
Francis a widower in 1926 was living at Blackhall Street with his two children and his
mother Ophelia.

O’Grady on 20.11.1921 at the Roman Catholic Church of St Nicholas, Francis Street,
Dublin.
5 Henry William Smyth born 02.01.1896 at Holles Street Hospital baptised at St Andrew’s,
Westland Row. Henry a private in the East Lancashire Regiment was killed on 10.08.1915
aged 18 years and is remembered on the Helles Memorial.
6 Ralph Sydney Smyth born 06.04.1898 at Guinness’s Buildings, Dublin. Ralph, a civil
servant of Blackhall Street married Josephine Conlon daughter of John Conlon on
18.08.1931 at the Roman Catholic Church of St Catherine, Dublin. Witnesses Francis
William Smyth and Florence Walsh.
7 Florence Smyth born 27.04.1900 at 9 Georges Place, Dublin.
5 Jane Magdalen Smyth born 22.07.1864 at 27 Eustace Street.
6 Edward Albert Smyth born 30.01.1866 at 10 Garville Avenue, Rathgar died in the same year.
