Francis Buckley married Mary Anne
died 8 Dec 1851
Francis Buckley married Mary Anne. Francis was in charge of the gardens at the Zoo and on
the death of Mr Scott in 1847 he became superintendent of the Royal Zoological Gardens,
Phoenix Park. He died suddenly from fever on 8 Dec 1851 leaving no provision for his family.
He was survived by his widow and six small children (and another due). A subscription fund
was opened and 161 pounds was raised. This was held in trust and administered by the
Zoological Society to help secure the future of the family.
1 Alexander Buckley second eldest son born 6 Jun 1843 at Phibsboro Avenue baptised
at Grangegorman. He married Susan Smith at Naas on 12 Mar 1868. Susan living
at Liffey View was the daughter of Robert Smith, a Methodist farmer. Alexander was
a carpenter and they lived in Blessington before moving to Inchicore. By 1911
Alexander was retired and four of their seven children had survived. Susan died at
11 Charlton Terrace on 21 Mar 1923 and Alexander died same place on 7 Feb 1924.
1 Francis Robert Buckley born 13 Dec 1869 at Charleville Avenue, Dublin. He
started work at Guinness’ on 14 Dec 1883. He married Frances Jane Cooper on
2 Apr 1892 at St Clement Danes, London. Frances (Jennie) was the daughter of
Francis Jones Cooper, a master plumber/contractor and Mary Louisa White.
Francis worked as a hall porter and they lived at Eglington Cottages in 1901 and
at Wolseley Street by 1908. He enlisted in 1914 reducing his aged by two years
and served at Pembroke 1 (an accounting base and administrative shore
establishment for the Royal Navy stationed at Chatham barracks). He was a
gate clerk for Guinness’ and they lived at Meadowlands, Churchtown by 1918.
Francis died 21 Jun 1931 at Mercers Hospital late of Meadowlands. Jennie died
14 Jan 1957 at St Helen’s Road, Blackrock aged 91, her son Alick the informant.
Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Alexander Buckley born 9 Jun 1893 at Greenville Terrace, SCR. He and
his father both enlisted in 1914.
2 Mary Henrietta Georgina Buckley born 15 Feb 1871 at Butterhill, Blessington. She
was living at Annamore Terrace when she married widower William John Coomber
in 30 Sep 1891 at Jude’s Church. William was a sergeant at the RHM Hibernian
School in the Phoenix Park and the son of Samuel Coomber, a superintendent
gardener in the Phoenix Park. William died on 4 Feb 1903 at the Adelaide Hospital.
1 Violet May Coomber born 3 Mar 1895 baptised at the Royal Hibernian
Church.
Mary secondly married Joseph Dempster on 3 Oct 1906 at St Jude's Parish Church.
Joseph was Staff sergeant, a divorcee and the son of Joseph Dempster, a hotel
keeper. They were living at Aldgate, London in 1911 with their children.

4 Susan Buckley born 22 June 1872 at Butterhill, Blessington died 23 Sep 1872 at
5 Garden Terrace, Dublin.
5 John Thomas Buckley baptised 28 Aug 1875 at 1 Thorn Villa, Rutland Avenue,
Crumlin died same place on 15 Sep 1875.
6 Samuel H Buckley born 20 May 1878 at Rutland Avenue, Crumlin was a grocer
in 1901.
7 Annie Jane Buckley born 17 Nov 1880 at Rutland Avenue, Crumlin. She married
George Scott Coomber on 27 Jan 1904 at Jude’s Church. George was a sergeant
in the R I Fusiliers and was the son of William John Coomber a quartermaster.
They lived in India after they married, George born in Bermuda was
superintendent at the Richmond Institute for the Industrious Blind and Annie
was matron there from 1920. They lived at O'Connell Street Upper and had at
least three children.
2 James Buckley (twin) born 6 Jun 1843 at Phibsboro Avenue baptised at Grangegorman.
He was a mechanic living in Liverpool when he married Fanny Burnett at Donabate
on 26 Dec 1865. Fanny was the daughter of William Burnett, a music teacher.
3 George Buckley born 12 Nov 1845 at Grangegorman. He was a law clerk living at Lower
Gloucester Street when he married Matilda Murray on 3 Nov 1870. Matilda was living
at Malahide and was the daughter of Thomas Murray, a school master.
4 Mary Anne Buckley born 7 Jun 1848 at the Phoenix Park baptised at St Mary’s.
5 Samuel Buckley baptised at St James’ on 24 Jul 1850. He was a butcher/shopkeeper of
Leixlip when he married Anne Coely on 22 Jul 1872 at Leixlip. Samuel died 11 Feb 1892
at Lucan, his brother Alexander the informant. Anne was living at Lucan in 1901 with
her four children.
6 Robert John Buckley born circa 1851. He was a grocer living at Lucan when he
married Frances Charlotte Reid on 28 Nov 1878 at St Thomas’ Church, Dublin. Frances
was living at Buckingham Street and was the daughter of William Reid, a mercantile
clerk. Robert was a relieving officer for Lucan and was also an assistant registrar.
Frances was a widow by 1901.
1 Walter Claude Buckley born 25 Jan 1880 at Lucan died same place on
23 Dec 1881.
