Quarter Staff of the Army in Ireland and subsequently secretary and adjutant to the Royal
Hibernian Military School, Dublin, formerly of Inchicore House. Lucinda died 20.12.1848 and
was buried at St Mark’s Graveyard. Christopher died 29.08.1859 at Upper Brunswick Street,
Brighton. Probate to his son Henry Clinton Foss.
1 Thomas Foss born circa 1804. Thomas aged 22 years was in Military Service in the
United Kingdom. Thomas a 1st Class Staff Surgeon to the Forces died on 29.11.1857
on board the Royal Mail Steamship on passage from Jamaica to England.

at Chapelizod Parish Church. John died on 15.02.1864 aged 60 years at his residence
113 Lower Gardiner Street, formerly of Fitzgibbon Street, Dublin. Internment to St
Mark’s Church. Probate to Cornelia Foss. Cornelia died on 13,07.1901 formerly of 38
Tedworth Square, Chelsea and 23 Overstrand Mansions and late 3 Grosvenor Crescent,
Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex.

Mary died unmarried on 19.11.1927 at 4 Clifford Road, Bexhill, Sussex. Probate
to brother Kenneth.
2 Major John Edward Vaughan Foss born 02.08.1851 at the HIB School, Phoenix
Park, Dublin. Major John MD to Bombay in 1874. Surgeon Major placed on half
pay because of ill health in 1892. John died unmarried on 02.01.1912 at Melton,
Terminus Avenue, Bexhill, Sussex the residence of his sister.
3 Kenneth Mackenzie Foss born 14.03.1856 was a nephew of Dr Foss of Stillorgan
and attended Rossall Collage in Lancashire in 1871 and the Military Academy at
19 Lower Leeson Street in 1876. Kenneth of the Madras Staff Corps married
Lavinia Ellen Lane McCormack daughter of George Lane McCormack, CE of
Pembroke Road, Dublin on 11.10.1877 at Christ Church, Chelsea. In 1891 they
lived at 28 Warwick Square, St George Hanover Square, London. Lieut Colonel
Kenneth M Foss served for many years in the Indian Army and obtained a lease
from the Duke of Argyll to explore the sea-bed for the remains of one of the
vessels of the Spanish Armada which took shelter in Tobermory Bay on the Isle
of Mull. He was unsuccessful in his salvage attempts. Lavinia died on 04.05.1922
aged 58 years following an operation at a London Nursing home at 11 Breaumont
Street, Harley Street. Kenneth died circa 08.05.1934 of Knigton, Barnhord Road,
Little Common.
The Duke of Argyll was a risk taker and in 1963 was involved in a scandal when he
divorced his wife Margaret. The BBC made a film in 2021 about the Duke of Argyll
starring Claire Foy and Paul Bettany.

4 Julia M Foss born circa 1810 baptised only daughter married John Henry Dennys O’Kelly
in 1830. Julia married secondly Andrew John Maley a Barrister 2nd son of Michael Maley
of Cavendish Row on 22.10.1843 at St Andrew’s, Westland Row. In 1861 the family were
living at 60 Brunswick Place, Hove, Sussex. Andrew died after a long illness on
30.05.1869 at Rue de la Baume, Paris of Upper Brunswick Place, Brighton and Merrion
Square, Dublin. Probate granted to his brother Michael.

5 Christopher Vaughan Foss 3rd son born 29.05.1814. Christopher of the 18th Royal Irish
married Anne Caroline Elizabeth Denroche youngest daughter of late John Dormer
Denroche, of Liscarrol, Cork on 04.05.1841 at Walcot Church, Bath. The family emigrated
to the Red River Settlement, Australia. In 1850 it was rumoured that Christopher had a
relationship with a Mrs Ballenden. Christopher took a case for defamatory conspiracy
against the instigators of the rumour which he won. Christopher was later a staff officer
of the Chelsea pensioners. He died on 16.12.1890 at Bathurst, New South Wales. Anne
died on 14.01.1892 aged 74 years at her residence Scilly, Kinsale. Probate to daughter
Elizabeth.

6 Henry Clinton Foss baptised 21.03.1816 at St Mary’s Pro Cathedral, Dublin. Sponsors
Henry Clinton and Anne Vaughan. He was a member of the RCSI and also was a
licentiate of midwifery. In 1841 Henry was appointed assistant surgeon with the 37th
foot and transferred to the 10th Regiment the following year and the 31st Regiment in
1846. By 1851 he was surgeon to the 2nd Regiment and by 1861 Surgeon Major. He
was based at Dublin Castle and lived at Lower Castle Yard. He moved to Waltersland
from 1875 to 1877. Henry was appointed Surgeon General in 1876 and principal
medical officer for Ireland. He retired on half pay in December 1876. He died
unmarried on 14.10.1877 aged 60 years at 122 Pembroke Road. Probate to Cornelia
Foss.
