Andrew Fleming son of Michael Fleming, a farmer of Queens County. Andrew a farmer of
Wolfhill, Queens County married Mary Brennan on 24 Nov 1888 at Wolfhill Church. Mary
was the daughter of Edward Brennan, farmer of Slatt. Andrew was later a slater/mason
and they had eleven children of whom nine survived in 1911. Andrew died 2 Feb 1937 and
was buried at Clogh Graveyard. Mary died 12 Sep 1942 and was buried with her husband.
1 Michael Fleming born 9 Jun 1889 was a sergeant in Drumahair in 1933.
2 Jane Madelaine Fleming born 13 Oct 1890 at Wolfhill married Leo Schwarz a jeweller
of Holywell, North Wales on 28 Aug 1919 at Wolfhill. Leo was the son of Anthony
Schwarz, a watchmaker.
1 Winifred Schwarz born 2 Jun 1920 in Wales.
3 Edward C (Eamon/Ned) Fleming second son born 22 Feb 1892 at Wolfhill. He joined
the Portlaoise Company Volunteers in 1913 and it was under his command in 1916.*
He was released from Reading prison in 1919. He was a civil servant in the
department of Finance of Dame Street and married Kathleen O’Farrelly on 7 Oct 1926
at Booterstown. Kathleen with an address of Summerville was the daughter of the
late John P Farrelly, a wine merchant. They had three children. In 1927 when Kevin
O’Higgins was shot, Eamon and his brother were living at Summerville a few doors
down from the O’Higgins home and were two of the first people on the scene.
Eamon went in search of a doctor returning with Dr Jim Higgins who was at a service
in SS Philip and James Church. Eamon died at Homeleigh, Carysfort Avenue on
15 Apr 1938. His funeral was held at St John’s Blackrock and he was buried at Clogh.
4 Padraic Joseph Fleming third son born 21 Apr 1894 at Wolfhill was an apprentice mason
in 1911. He was with the 3rd Battalion of the Kilkenny Brigade*. He was released from
prison in 1923. He was living at Pembroke Road and married Marguerita (Rita) O’Farrelly
on 2 Apr 1925 at St Lawrence O’Toole Church. Rita was the third daughter of the late
John Peter O’Farrelly of Oakley, Clontarf. He moved to Summerville on Booterstown
Avenue after their marriage and had five children. He set up Fleming Fireclay in 1935
with his brother John. By 1844 Paddy was a director of Wolfhill Coal Mine and Motol Ltd
and managing director of Slieveardagh Coal Mining Company. Padraic died 5 Dec 1952
at Gracefield House. His funeral mass was held at St John’s Church, Blackrock and he
was buried at Clogh Graveyard, Co Kilkenny. Marguerita did 1 May 1955 at Gracefield.
5 Bridget (Bridie) Fleming born 14 Feb 1896 at Slatt married Albert Leo McDermott
on 20 Jan 1920 at the Pro Cathedral. Albert was a merchant and the son of
Patrick McDermott.
6 Margaret Fleming born 1 Sep 1898 at Slatt died aged 2.
7 Mary Anne (Sheila) Fleming born 8 Feb 1900 at Slatt. Sheila was a civil servant and
married Dr Martin Finn on 28 April 1930 at St Columba’s Church, Dublin. Martin of
Rathoath was the son of John C & Elizabeth Finn. They lived in Sutton Co Dublin.
8 John Fleming born 21 Jul 1902 at Slatt. He was joint manager of Fireclay Ltd in 1938
and general manager in 1957. He married Margaret Mary Grifin, a primary school
teacher on 24 Apr 1946 and they had at least ten children. John died on 30 Jun 1968
at St Vincent’s Hospital.
9 Julia Fleming born 27 Oct 1904 at Slatt living with parents in 1911.
10 Joseph Fleming 2 Sep 1906 at Slatt married Bridget Kelly at Athy Church on 9 Apr 1938.
Bridget was the daughter of the late Thomas Kelly, a farmer.
11 Sarah Mary Fleming born 25 Jul 1909 at Slatt. She professed as a nun with the Sisters
of Charity. Sister M St Laserian was a physiotherapist and worked at St Gerard’s
Hospital, Birmingham and at the Children’s Orthopaedic Clinic at Stratford-upon-Avon.
She returned to Dublin in 1981.
12 Catherine Rose Fleming born 16 Apr 1912 at Slatt professed a nun in 1931. Sister
Evangelista youngest daughter died at Our lady of the Apostles, Ballintemple on
1 Jun 1933.
