Maurice Fitzgerald married Margaretta Frend Nee Kennedy

Maurice Fitzgerald born circa 1763. He married Margaretta (Kennedy?) on 22 May 1797 at
Madras. Margaretta was the widow of Benjamin Frend and had a number of children. Maurice
was of Lifford, County Limerick and was a physician to the British Government and to the
Nabob at Madras.
1 William Burton Fitzgerald baptised at Madras India on 28 Dec 1798.
2 Juliana Cecilia Fitzgerald baptised at Madras 23 Dec 1799 married William Fitzgerald of
Adelphi, Co Clare on 9 May 1817 and they had two daughters. Julianna died in 1823.
1 Mary Fitzgerald married Lucias O’Brien in 1837.
2 Anne FitzGerald married Richard Bassett Wilson in 1839.
3 Maurice Gerald Fitzgerald eldest son baptised 22 Jan 1801 at Madras. He was a lieutenant
in the 41st Regiment and died Nagpur District, Maharashtra, India on 7 Jun 1827.
Maurice Fitzgerald secondly married Mary Burton on 8 Sep 1803 (ML) at St Peter’s Church, Dublin.
Mary was the second daughter of E W Burton of Clifton, Co Clare. They lived at 56 Eccles Street and
later a Donnybrook. Maurice died 15 Mar 1838 formerly of Eccles Street but late of Kildare St Dublin
and left 2k in personal estate. His pension of 2k per annum reverted to the East India Company on
his death.
4 Edward William Fitzgerald born 16 Nov 1804 at Madras graduated Trinity and was admitted
Kings Inns. He was living at 10 Upper Pembroke Street in 1843 and lived at Belgrove from
1854. He died 26 Dec 1871 at Belgrove, his brother Francis his executor. He made a number
of bequests to RC parish priests including the pp of Kilroan in Co Clare and the pp of
Donnybrook where he resided.
5 Jane Mary Fitzgerald born 1 Dec 1805 at Madras living at Eccles Street in 1824.
6 Francis Alexander Fitzgerald born 5 Jun 1807 in Madras. He graduated Trinity and was
admitted Kings Inns and called to the Irish Bar in 1834. He married Janet Lecky Burton on
11 Jul 1836 at Kingston, Leicestershire. Janet was the eldest daughter of Major Charles F
Burton of Williamstown, Blackrock. Francis was living at 50 Stephens Green in 1864. He was
a second baron of Her Majesty’s Court of Exchequer and offered the appointment of the Lord
Chief Justiceship of the Irish Court of the Queen’s Bench in 1876 which apparently, he
declined. Francis owned 781 acres in county Clare in 1876 and retired in 1882. Hon Francis
died 4 Feb 1897 at 50 Stephen’s Green and Jane died 21 Oct 1906 aged 96 at 27 Upper
Merrion Street.
1 Margaret Anne FitzGerald married Gerald FitzGibbon on 31 Mar 1864 at St Peter’s.
Gerald was a barrister living at 10 Merrion Square and the son of Gerald Fitzgibbon,
master in chancery. He was considered to be one of the outstanding Irish judges of
his generation.
2 Mary Fitzgerald born circa 1837 in Co Dublin unmarried in 1901 and living with her
brother and mother at Merrion Square.
3 Charles Edward Fitzgerald only son born circa 1843 Co Dublin was an MD. He was
president of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He married Isabella Ferrier
Clarke on 13 Apr 1869 at Monkstown Church and they had four sons. Isabella died
25 May 1877.
1 James Fitzgerald born circa 1874 was superintendent in a Dublin Food
Packing Company. He was single and living with his father in 1901.
Charles secondly married Edythe Overend on 22 Feb 1908 at Christ Church Cathedral
and was an oculist and dentist. He died a widower on 22 May 1916.
7 Anne Fitzgerald born circa 1812 died 3 Jul 1830 at Roebuck.
8 William FitzGerald born circa 1814 youngest son took Holy orders and was a professor
of moral philosophy at Trinity. He married Anne Frances Stoney on 23 Apr 1846 at St
Peter’s, Dublin. Anne was the elder daughter of George Stoney of Oakley Park, King’s
County and they had six children. He was Vicar of St Anne’s and appointed Vicar of
Monkstown and Archdeacon of Kildare in 1855. Anne died 20 Oct 1859. William was
Bishop of Killaloe and Clonfert from 1857 to 1883. William died at Clarisford House,
Killaloe on 24 Nov 1883 and was buried at St Nicholas Church, Cork.
1 George Francis FitzGerald born circa 1851 was a physicist and was Erasmus Smiths
Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy in the University of Dublin. He
married Harriette Mary Jellett on 21 Dec 1885 at St Peters Church, Dublin. Harriette
was the daughter of the Reverend John Hewitt Jellett. George died on 22 Feb 1901 at
7 Ely Place. Harriett and three of their eight children were living at Ely Place in 1901
and in Leeson Street in 1911. Harriette died 10 Feb 1919 and both are buried at Mount
Jerome with some of his sisters and brother.
