Andrew Ennis of Griffithstown, Co Westmeath Roebuck. He was a wealthy and influential Roman
Catholic trader in Dublin. He had a bakery at 50 Great George’s Street and was a director of the
Hibernian Fire and Life Insurance Company and the Hibernian Joint Stock Banking Company. He
was a supporter of Daniel O’Connell and had a house at 21 Harcourt Street from 1824 and was
in Roebuck by 1829. He died 31 May 1834 at his seat in Roebuck and was buried in the vaults of
the Pro Cathedral. Mary died at her residence at Prince Edward Terrace in Blackrock on
15 Dec 1855.
1 John Ennis born 15.08.1800 baptised at SS Michael & John attended school at Stoneyhurst
and followed his father into business. As only son John married Anna Maria Henry eldest
daughter of David Henry of Stephen’s Green on 09.09.1833 at Clifton Church,
Gloucestershire and they lived at Roebuck from 1834 to 1849. He was a businessman,
landowner and politician. He became Governor of the Bank of Ireland and Chairman of
the Midland Great Railway. He was created a Baronet in 1866 of Ballinahown, Westmeath.
Sir John died 08.08.1878 at 9 Merrion Square. Anna died 22.03.1889 late of 14 Grove Road,
St John’s Wood, Middlesex aged 94.
1 Mary Sophie Ennis born circa 1837 married Daniel O’Donoghue (Connolly) of the Glens
on 10.02.1858 at St Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church, Westland Row. (The O’Donoghue)
Daniel died of Typhoid aged 58 years on 07.10.1889 and Mary died on 22.10.1891 aged
55 years both at their residence Ballinahown Court near Athlone and were buried in the
family vault in Muckross Abbey, Killarney.
1 Geoffrey Charles Patrick O’Donoghue born circa 1859 married Annie Matilda
Deighton (Maud) Charlton youngest daughter of William Charlton of Clonmacnoise
House, Kings County on 17.01.1895 at St George’s Church, Dublin. They were living
at 11 Gardiners Place, Dublin in 1901 and in 1911 at Great Denmark Street. Maud
died on 23.07.1921 aged 67 years at 15 Clarinda Park East, Dun Laoghaire and
Geoffrey of The Glens died on 13.06.1935 aged 76 years at 17 Mellifont Avenue,
Dun Laoghaire. Probate to Violet Elise Howley Foley.
2 Charles John Joseph O’Donoghue 2nd son born circa 1860 married Rose Dalton
daughter of Larry Dalton of Killgarvin on 20.07.1892 at the Roman Catholic Chapel,
Ballinahown. Charles inherited in 1891 the large Westmeath estates of his uncle Sir
John Ennis. In 1901 Charles was living with his wife Rose and brothers John and
Angus at Ballinahown. Charles died at his residence Ballinahown Court, Athlone
on 25.01.1903 and in 1911 Rose was living with her brother-in-law Florence and his
wife Ellen.
3 Daniel O’Donoghue born circa 1863 and died of typhus fever on 29.09.1888 aged
24 years at Ballinahown. Informant brother Geoffrey.
4 Florence O’Donoghue born circa 1869. Florence married Ellen Dalton daughter of
Lawrence Dalton of Kilgarvan on 23.06.1896 at the Roman Catholic Church in
Ballinahown, Athlone. Florence died on 06.07.1919 aged 49 years and Ellen died on
21.02.1931 both at Ballinahown Court.
5 John James David O’Donoghue born 24.01.1872 at Tomies Cottage, Killarney. John
a law student living with his brother Charles in 1901.
6 Angus Robert O’Donoghue 4th son born circa 1875 died unmarried on 20.10.1908
aged 33 years at the Hibernian Hotel, 138 Capel Street, Dublin. Informant brother
John.
2 Margaret Alicia Josephine Ennis 2nd daughter born circa 1840 married Edmund Waterton,
Private Chamberlain to his Holiness Pius IX only son of Charles Waterton of Walton Hall,
Yorkshire on 20.08.1862 at St Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church. Margaret died on
26.12.1879 at Villa Neuve, Cannes.
3 Sir John James Ennis only son born 06.04.1842 baptised at St Nicholas’s Church educated
at Oscott and Christ Church, Oxford. Sir John most likely lived off his inheritance and died
unmarried on 28.05.1884 at 36 Curzon Street, Mayfair. The title became extinct following
his death and the estates were inherited by his sister’s family the O’Donoghues of the
Glens.
4 Elizabeth Antonia Joanna Ennis youngest daughter baptised on 06.04.1842 at St Nicholas’
Church married Joseph Edward O’Neill-Power eldest son of Nicholas O’Neill-Power of
Snowhill, Waterford on 27.11.1869 at St Andrew’s Chapel, Dublin. Elizabeth died of
typhoid fever on 20.10.1879 aged 37 years at Snow House, Drumdowney.
2 Elizabeth Ennis eldest daughter died at Harcourt Street on June 1828.
3 James Ennis baptised 21 May 1803 at SS Michael & John died before 1805.
4 Marianne Ennis baptised 31 May 1804 at SS Michael & John married Edward Howley in July
1836. Edward was the eldest son of Edward Howley of Belleek Castle Co Mayo. They had
a young family when Marianne died on 22 Oct 1847 at Belleek Castle.
5 James Ennis baptised 23 Jun 1805 at SS Michael & John died before 1833 died before
1833.
6 Jane Ennis, third daughter baptised 15 Nov 1807 at SS Michael & John married Nicholas
Balfe of Heathfiels, Co Roscommon in December 1832 at Harcourt Street.
7 Andrew Ennis baptised 9 Dec 1808 at SS Michael & John died before 1811.
8 Andrew Ennis baptised 27 Oct 1811 at SS Michael & John died before 1833.
9 Alicia Ennis youngest daughter baptised 29 Oct 1809 at SS Michael & John married John
