John Joseph Egan born circa 1862 in London. He married Mary Josephine (Minnie) Egan at St
Teresa’s Catholic Church, Lincoln, Nebraska on 25 Sep 1885. Thomas Brennan ex secretary
of the Irish Land League acted at Best Man. Mary was the eldest daughter of Patrick Egan,
treasurer of the Land League and by 1889 USA’s minister to Chile, and his wife Alice Mary
Magee, secretary of the Ladies Land League. Her father emigrated to Nebraska in 1883 and
her mother emigrated with the children the following year. Her brother Francis William
(Frank) was Irish representative in Chile from 1921. After the wedding they boarded a train
to Chicago and then on to New York to sail for Ireland where they were to reside.
By 1911 John and Mary had fifteen children of whom twelve had survived. John was a JP and
the managing director of Sir James Mackay and Co, Seed merchants, of Sackville Street.
They lived at 12 Longford Terrace from 1898 to 1917 where John died on 11 Nov 1917. His
funeral Mass was held at St Patrick’s, Monkstown and he was buried at Glasnevin. Minnie
died at 12 Longford Terrace on 12 Mar 1932, her son Kevin the informant. Minnie was
buried in Glasnevin.
1 Kathleen Rose Mary Egan born 24 Dec 1887 at 8 Booterstown Avenue died at the
Richmond Asylum from TB on 10 Jun 1914.
2 Nicholas Joseph Egan eldest son 17 Dec 1889 at 8 Booterstown Avenue enlisted in
Canada and then received a commission in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He was
awarded the Military Cross in 1916 for Gallantry on service in France after fighting
Germans in No Mans Land. He married Isabel King on 19 Jun 1919 at St Mary’s Parish
Church, Hencage Road, Grimsby. Isabel was the widow of Captain H King. They
emigrated to America circa 1921. Nicholas died at Hartford Connecticut on
18 Oct 1955.
3 John Egan born and died 1891 at Booterstown Avenue.
4 Patrick Michael Egan born circa 1893 in Sandymount and was a member of the Irish
Civil Engineers. He died a bachelor on 2 Jan 1956 at Wicklow and was buried at
Rathnew.
5 Mary Grace (Grace) Egan born 11 Feb 1894 at Glengarrif, Claremont Road,
Sandymount, Co Dublin. She worked as a VAD in France during WW1. She
married Robert Jerome Robertson of London at Monkstown Church on 4 Feb 1925.
Robert was the son of Captain Thomas Robertson. They moved to London.
6 John Brendan Egan born circa 1896 in Sandymount, Co Dublin. He emigrated and
married Lola Edith Grant on 15 Jun 1940 at Montreal. Lola was the daughter of A V
Grant of Montreal. He died on 21 Oct 1958 in Montreal.
7 Alice Jeanette Egan born 25 Jul 1896 at Claremont Road, Sandymount, Co Dublin living
with her parents in 1901. She served as a clerk with the Royal Navy during WW1 and
later moved to America.
8 Gerald Forbes Egan born 4 Mar 1898 at 12 Longford Terrace, Monkstown. He was an
engineer and married Edith M Maguire on 6 Oct 1926 at St Mary’s, Haddington Road.
Edith was from Northumberland Road and the daughter of Patrick N Maguire, a
commercial agent. Gerald as chief engineer and locomotive superintendent for the
Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway until it’s closure in 1957. Edith died late
of Lilac Cottage Dundrum on 23 Sep 1965. He was also a director of Mackey seeds
and died in 1974 and was survived by his six children.
9 Edward Forbes Egan born 13 July 1899 in Co Dublin.
10 Francis Gillis McBean (Frank) Egan born 13 Jul 1900 at Longford Terrace. He enlisted
in 1917 and was with the Machine Gun Corps. He was discharged for forgery but did
receive the British War medal and Victory medal. He was a commercial traveller and
married Maude Bennett on 24 Sep 1928 at the Church of the Holy Name in Rathmines.
They lived at Carysfort Lodge, Grove Avenue Stillorgan from 1932 to 1935. Frank died
on 25 Nov 1967 at Sir Patrick Dun’s late of Carysfort, Upper Glenageary Road and was
buried at Deansgrange.
11 William Gerard (Billy) Egan born 18 August 1901 at 12 Longford Terrace, Monkstown.
He enlisted and served with the RAF during WW1. He was an unmarried painter living
at Uxbridge in 1939. He died on 20 Mar 1950 at Hammersmith, probate to his brother
Frank.
12 Kevin Brian Xavier Egan born 27 Nov 1904 at Holles Street, Dublin. He married Mary
Sheila MacDonald at St Patricks, Monkstown on 27 Sep 1944. Sheila from Holyville in
Monkstown was the daughter of James MacDonald, a sea captain. Kevin was a clerk in
the Dublin Gas Company and they lived at Sandycove. Kevin died 29 Jan 1964 at
Sandycove.
13 Aidan Fergus Egan died aged four months at 3 Oct 1906 at Longford Terrace.
14 Mary Josephine (Jo) Egan born circa 1907 in Co Dublin married Henry Patrick Teevan
on 7 Feb 1934 at Monkstown Church. Henry was a doctor and the fifth son of Dr
Frances James Teevan of Dartry Road. The reception was held at Carysfort, Grove
Avenue.
15 Lelia Moria Egan born 7 Aug 1909 at Longford Terrace. She qualified as a nurse
and never married.
