House
NAME Dundrum Castle (Manor House) later Dundrum Castle House
AREA LOCATION Iron gated entrance from Ballinteer Road with porter's lodge.
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838-1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of
Dundrum and it is annotated as Dundrum Castle on both.
GENERAL In 1795 40a 2r 20p (old castle, small house and 2 cabins) were for
Sale by public cant formerly held by Isaac Dobson and now in the possession of Anthony
Dobson. The site also included the metal works and buildings and mills.
Originally a five bay two story Georgian house with parapet two single storey wings and a cut
stone door case. The wings were later raised to two storey and a porch added. It had a ruined
13th century castle on the property which had been rebuilt in the 16th century. In 1811 it was on
27 acres with 30,000 registered trees on the site and it was enclosed by a stone wall. There was
a stream running through the site with a plaque on the bridge which read 'God bless this castle
and prosper it, made by William Mallett 1700'. This was still in place in 1920, however the date
seems unlikely. It was for sale along with the Iron works, the mill pond and two house that
fronted on to the main street in 1795. In was on 5 acres in 1894.
YEAR BUILT circa 1767
VALUATION In 1847 the valuation was 132 pounds and in the 1901 census it is
noted as having 22 rooms occupied by the family.
ARCHITECT Unknown. Alterations by William Fogarty, architect in 1868/9.
