John Duffey son of John Duffey. His father employed 1200 daily workers at his calico
printworks in 1798 and he went into the family business in 1802. He was a merchant and
calico printer of Ballsbridge and married Margaret Orr in February 1804. Margaret was the
daughter of William Orr of Ralston House, Paisley and Margaret Kibble. Her father was a
Glasgow merchant who had made his fortune in the manufacture of linens in Ireland. Her
father died in 1812. Her brother Robert Orr was married to Annie Duffey and her sister
Eliza was married to Robert Orr of Dublin. In 1817 John opened a retail arm to the business
at Bridge Street. His property portfolio included the bakery, corn stores and mills at
Ballsbridge that were leased to Johnston's. They lived at Richview from 1827 to 1834.
Margaret died 7 Oct 1843 at 28 Pembroke Road. John put the Upper Mills which were on
the Dodder at Donnybrook up for let John in 1847 and took a lease on Cyprus Grove in
1854. He outlived all his sons and died 15 Jul 1858 at Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin late of
Cyprus Grove.
1 John Duffy junior born 4 Nov 1804 in Dublin was educated at the Feinaigle School and
graduated Trinity. He was admitted Grays Inns and Kings Inns. He married Mary
Victoria Cuming Luscombe on 10 May 1831 at St Marys’ Donnybrook Mary was the
eldest daughter of Thomas Popham Luscombe of Gayfield, Donnybrook and his first
wife Mary Wood of Devon. John junior was of Fitzwilliam Street from 1832 to 1848. He
was a barrister and merchant and died 10 Feb 1856 at Sandycove.
1 Son Duffy born at Upper Fitzwilliam Street on 27 Apr 1832 died an infant in
January 1833.
2 Caroline Kate Duffey born circa 1833 died unmarried on 10 Feb 1915 at Clarinda
Park, Kingstown. She left 6k in personal estate, probate to her niece Caroline
Beatrice Duffey.
3 John Luscombe Duffy born at 5 Upper Fitzwilliam Street, baptised at St Peters in
1836. He married Sarah Maria Bleir on 21 Apr 1860 at The Registrar’s Office Dublin.
Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Bleir, a government officer. John died 14 Jul 1861
at 3 Hackett’s Buildings, North Strand late of Richview and Cyprus Grove. Sarah then
moved to 4 Little Britain Street. The sale of the estate was adjourned by the Landed
Estates Court in 1861.
4 Robert Duffey born 16 Oct 1841 at Upper Fitzwilliam Street baptised at St Peters.
5 George Frederick Duffey MD born 20 Jun 1843 at 5 Upper Fitzwilliam Street baptised
at St Peters. He received his medical degree from Trinity College. He was an
assistant surgeon with the 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment. George was living at Corrig
Road, Kingstown and married Agnes Cameron by special licence on 29 Apr 1871 at
the Gresham Hotel. Agnes was the daughter of the late John Cameron and sister of
Sir Charles Cameron, Bart, MD, DL. He was founder of the Irish Hospital Gazette and
was physician to Mercer's and City of Dublin Hospitals and president of the Royal
College of Physicians of Ireland. They lived at 30 Fitzwilliam Place. George was knighted
in 1897, died 13 Oct 1903 and left 7K in person estate. He was buried with Cameron
family at Mount Jerome. Agnes died in London in 1923.
1 George Allan Duffey born 13 Mar 1872, Lieutenant 1st Battalion West Indian
Regiment died of yellow fever on 13.10.1897 late of Port Royal Jamaica.
2 Caroline Beatrice Duffey born 12 Jul 1873 living with her mother at Fitzwilliam
Place in 1911. She married James Bruce Mantell on 12 Apr 1921 at St Mary’s
Holmwood. James was a manual therapist and they travelled to Algiers in 1924.
Caroline died a widow on 26 Feb 1957 at Middleton, Cork.
3 Arthur Cameron Duffey born 13 Jan 1875 graduated Trinity and was a licentiate
of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. He served the Royal Army Medical
Corps during WW1 and attained the rank of major. He died in London on
12 Nov 1922 and left 7k in personal estate.
4 Esther Frances Duffey born 23 May 1878 married John Hill Trevor McNeill on
3 Jun 1902 at Christ Church Leeson Park. John was a barrister and the son of John
McNeill, an engineer.
5 Florence Mary Duffey born 7 Sep 1883 married Lieut Cecil Godfrey Cruttwell at
Christ Church, Leeson Park on 7 Oct 1908.
2 Margaret Duffey eldest daughter born circa 1805 married widower the Hon Judge Philip Cecil
Crampton on 18 Jun 1844 at Sandford Church. Philip was the son of the Rev Cecil Crampton,
rector of Headford and his wife Nichola Marsh. They lived at St Vallerie in Bray and Judge
Crampton retired in 1857. In 1838 Irish Judge Philip Cecil Crampton in one of his rulings
reminded the parties that 'an Irish court though applying English law was “not regulated by the
practice in England, but by the established practice of the Irish courts". ' Judge Crampton was
a staunch supporter of the temperance movement and an anecdote is that he poured the
contents of the wine cellar into the Dargle River which flowed through his Bray property. He
was also the judge in the trial of William Burke Kirwan in what became known as the Ireland’s
Eye Mystery. Philip died at St Valerie in December 1862 aged 79. Margaret died at her residence
Gloucester Gardens, Hyde Park on 23 Dec 1882.
1 Philip Cecil Crampton only son born circa 1847 died at Queens Gate Terrace on his
way abroad on 8 Sep 1866 aged 19. He left 2K in person estate but his mother failed to
administer it.
3 Sophia Georgina Duffy youngest daughter was resident at Monkstown and married Francis
Smith at Monkstown Church on 14 Mar 1854. Francis worked for HM Treasury and was the
son of the late John Smith, Vice Treasurer of Ireland. Sophia died 15 Sep 1855 at 15 Adelaide
Terrace, upper Leeson Street.
4 William Duffy youngest son of John Duffy of Pembroke Street, married Eleanor Doyle. He
was a captain in the third US Dragoons and died in July 1847 at Vera Cruz. Eleanor died a
widow at Lawson Terrace, Sandycove on 30 Jun 1868.
