Carter Eben Draper born circa 1809 baptised 17 Jan 1811 at Holborn son of Carter Draper, a
chemist and Elizabeth Oakes. He was a wholesale druggist and moved to Dublin circa 1847.
He had premises at Mary Street and was in partnership with Henry Bewley by 1858 trading
as Bewley & Draper. Carter died by his own hand on 14 May 1866* at Arbour Field, Grosvenor
Road, Rathgar and is buried at Mount Jerome. He left 18k in personal estate. Elenor moved
to Nahant after the death of her husband. She died 11 Dec 1894 at Nahant, Avoca Avenue,
Blackrock. Her grandson George Hanlon the informant. She is buried with her husband.
1 Henry Napier (Harry) Draper born 1837 in Hereford. He married Hannah Connolly on
15 Sep 1857 at St George’s Church. Hannah was the daughter of Robert Connolly of
Cork Hill, Marlborough Street. They lived at 13 Charlemont Terrace Rathmines and
had at least two children. Hannah died 8 Nov 1865 aged 30 and is buried at Mount
Jerome.
Harry secondly married Charlotte Elizabeth Egan on 5 Dec 1866 at Taney Church.
Charlotte was the third daughter of William James Egan of Rockville, Dundrum. They
had a least five children. Harry, FCS FCSL, a pharmacist contributed a number of papers
to the medical press. He was a mineral water manufacturer, the owner of Bewley &
Draper of 23 Mary’s Street. He was the inventor of draper's dichroic ink, a quick drying
non corrosive ink. He died by his own hand, in the mistaken belief that he was about to
be committed to a lunatic asylum, on 27 Jun 1892 at Albion House, Dundrum, the home
of his brother in law Frederick Egan. He left 94k in personal estate. Charlotte died
24 Oct 1892 at Esterel, Temple Road, Rathmines aged 50. Both are buried at Mount
Jerome.
1 Edward Alfred Draper born circa 1873 died 26 Mar 1882 aged 9 and is buried with
his parents.
2 Frederick Draper second son born 1839 in Hereford. He married Isabella McKenna on
14 Feb 1860 at George’s Church, Dublin. They lived at Dunville Avenue and had at least
two children. Frederick died 1 May 1863 aged 24 at Toronto Lodge, Rathgar and is
buried at Mount Jerome.
3 Ellen Draper born 1841 in Hereford. She married George Oldham Hanlon on 15 Jul 1865
at Rathmines. George was a civil servant and a member of the London Mathematical
Society. He died 27 Nov 1873 aged 31 and is buried in Mount Jerome. Ellen and the
children lived at Nahant after the death of George. She lived at Otranto Place from 1901
to 1911. Ellen died at Bloomfield on 4 Dec 1919.
1 George Hanlon born 14 May 1869 at Marino Lodge, Monkstown lived at Nahant.
He was a tutor living at Cleveland Road, Woodford and married Florence Catherine
Kerse on 4 Sep 1905 at the Presbyterian Church, Sandymount. Florence was the
daughter of James Kerse, a tailor. In 1921 they had no children were living at
Cambridge and George was a University Correspondence Tutor in Maths & Physics
and Florence also worked for the University and did the clerical work.
2 Eleanor (Ellie) Hanlon born 28 Feb 1870 at Marino Lodge, Monkstown died
unmarried on 29 Nov 1944 at Bloomfield and is buried with her parents.
4 Mary Draper younger daughter born 1843 in Hereford. She married Henry Wilmot on
15 Mar 1864 at St Peter’s Church, Dublin. Henry was an architect and the son of John
Wilmot of Carlisle House, Rathgar. Mary died 8 Jun 1865 aged 23 years. She is buried at
Mount Jerome.
1 Eleanor Wilmot born 16 April 1865 died at Arbourfield, Rathmines aged 5 weeks
and is buried at Mount Jerome with her mother.
Henry secondly married Georgina Mary Christie at Londonderry in 1871. He died aged 91
at 22 Waltham Terrace in 1932.
5 Carter Draper born 1845 in Hereford. He graduated Trinity college in engineering,
practical mechanics and physics. He married his first cousin Sophy Draper on 10 Apr 1866
at Rathmines. Sophy was the daughter of Hastings Dare Draper and the granddaughter of
Carter Draper and Elizabeth Oakes. They had twelve children and eight of them were born
at Nahant. He worked on various projects for Courtney Stephens & Bailey and on the
engineering staff of the Great Southern & Western Railway. He was appointed county
surveyor to the west riding of Co Galway in 1878 after an open competitive examination.
In 1882 he was appointed County surveyor to Wicklow. He also had a private practice and
designed the Captain Robert Halpin obelisk memorial in 1894 and the extension to
Deansgrange Cemetery in 1898. They were living at Grosvenor Road by 1901. Carter died
on 7 Dec 1902 and left 29k in personal estate. Sophy died 17 Feb 1927 aged 84 at Grosvenor
Road. Both are buried at St Patrick’s graveyard in Enniskerry.
1 Eleanor Draper born 3 Jan 1867 at Nahant. Eleanor a retired teacher died unmarried
at a Dublin nursing home on 5 Dec 1962 and was buried with her parents in
Enniskerry.
2 Sophy Draper born 19 Jan 1868 at Nahant married Charles Stokes on 13 Apr 1904.
Charles was a bank clerk and the son of Richard Stokes.
3 Mary (May) Draper born 26 Jul 1869 at Avoca Avenue an unmarried art student living
with her mother in 1911. She married Holyroyd Price in 1920.
4 Harriette Draper born 16 Jan 1871 at Nahant living with her mother in 1911. She died
unmarried on 17 Sep 1926 at Grosvenor Road.
5 Carter Gordon Draper born 15 Jun 1872 at Nahant, Blackrock died from typhoid fever
on 18 Feb 1891 at Norman House, Bray.
6 Hasting Dare Draper born 11 Feb 1873 at Blackrock, a solicitor in 1901. He married
Maud Marion Harty on 23 Jul 1902 at Rathfarnham parish church. Maud was the
daughter of Spencer Harty, a civil engineer. By 1911 they had four children and were
living at Rathgar. Hasting had offices in St Andrew’s Street and died at Zion Road,
Rathgar in 1952.
7 Emily Draper born 15 May 1875 at Avoca Avenue living with her mother in 1911.
Emily died unmarried at the Adelaide Hospital in 1934 late of Grosvenor Road.
8 Charles Frederick Draper born 25 Nov 1876 at Nahant. He was a civil engineer and
married Kathleen Maxwell on 25 Aug 1909 at St Stephen’s Church. Kathleen was the
youngest daughter of Patrick W Maxwell, an ophthalmic surgeon of Baggot Street.
They were living at Quarryvale, Palmerstown in 1911 and had one son. They
emigrated to Canada where George held a number of government jobs including
assistant engineer on the Canadian Pacific Railway.
9 Maude E Draper born 12 Oct 1878 at Salthill, Galway living with her parents in 1901.
She married George Percy Manning of Oaklawn, Newcastle, Co Wicklow on 10 May 1905
at Holy Trinity Church, Rathmines. They were living in Newcastle with their three
children in 1911.
10 Francis Edwin Draper born 4 May 1880 in Galway a commercial clerk in 1901. He was
a civil engineer when he married Elsie Marion McEntagart on 24 Mar 1906 at
Rathfarnham parish church. Elsie was the daughter of John McEntagart of Butterfield
House, Rathfarnham. They were living at Mitchelstown, Cork with one son and Francis
was working as a civil engineer/architect.
11 George Ernest Draper born 18 Sep 1882 at Bray, a draftsman in 1901. He was a land
surveyor and married Aileen Dora May Herford Baird on 21 Dec 1903 at St Peter’s
Church, Dublin. Aileen was the daughter of James Baird, a physician of Grosvenor
Square, Rathmines. In 1911 they had no children and were living at Castlereagh,
Roscommon, where George was an assistant land inspector with the Congested
Districts Board.
12 Arthur Philip Draper born 23 May 1889 at Norman House, Bray a TCD medical
student living with his mother in 1911. He qualified in 1912 and joined the RAMC. He
married Lena Alice Payn on 22 Sep 1913 in Kent. Lena was the daughter of Enwin
Payne. Arthur remained with the armed forces and was in India in 1921. He
attained the rank of major and was based in Woolwich in 1937. Lena was invalided
out of India in 1935. She had an inoperable brain disease and suffered terrible
headaches and took her own life in 1937.
