Howard Dowker married Mary Carter

Howard Dowker born circa 1762 admitted Kings Inns. He was a solicitor of 31 Mary’s Abbey
when he married Mary Carter on 14 Apr 1787 at St Peter’s, Dublin. Mary was the sister of
Willoughby Harcourt Carter, owner of Lota. He was agent to the Commission of
Bankruptcy and also had offices at 11 Strand Street. Howard died circa 1799 and letters of
administration were granted to his widow Mary on 15 Mar 1799.
1 Howard Dowker baptised at St James’ Dublin in 1796. He was a captain in the HEICS
when he married Sarah Fleetwood on 7 Apr 1825 at Monkstown Church. Sarah was
the third daughter of Henry Fleetwood and Dorothea Carter of Mount Pelier Parade,
Monkstown. He was stationed at Mangalore in 1837 in command of the Second
Regiment of Native Infantry. They lived at Lota from 1841 to 1843. Howard was
appointed a lieutenant general in 1863. General Howard Dowker died 5 Feb 1870 at
Ootacamund and is interred in Nilgiri. Sarah died 27 Oct 1884 at Ootacamund,
Neilgherries aged 76 and is buried with her husband.
1 Dorah Maria Dowker born 9 Feb 1827 at St George, Madras died in February
1828 at St George, Madras.
2 Maria Wilson Dowker born 12 Aug 1827 at St George, Madras died in July 1830 at
St George, Madras.
3 Howard Codrington Dowker born 12 Apr 1829 baptised at St Thomas Mount. He
was a lieutenant in the HMS Indian army when he married Cecilia Augusta
Onslow at Ootacamund, Madras on 1 Oct 1864. Cecilia was the daughter of
Thomas Onslow. They were living at Vyvyan Terrace, Clifton with their daughter
Ada and son Leonard in 1871. He attained the rank of general by 1887 and
major general by 1888. He died 4 Dec 1912 at Eastbourne, his wife Cecilia his
executor.
4 Mary Jane Dowker born 11 Dec 1830 at St Andrew, Madras. As eldest daughter she
married J H Melville Babington on 20 Sep 1853 at Madras. J H was a captain in the
48th Regiment Madras Native Infantry.
5 Sarah Caroline Dowker born 18 Apr 1832 at Mangalore. She married William
Anthony Gib on 28 Jan 1851 at Madras. William was later Sir William and was the
son of Colin Gib.
6 Ellen Harietta Dowker born 22 Jun 1833 at Mangalore. She married Henry Ernest
Thesiger Williams on 28 Jan 1856 at Ootacamund, Nielgerries. Henry was a
lieutenant and adjutant of the 3rd Madras European Regiment and the eldest son
of the late Captain H B Williams.
7 Henry Walcan Dowker second son born 10 Mar 1835 at Mangalore. He was a
lieutenant in HM 82nd Regiment died 26 Oct 1855.
8 Henrietta Alice Dowker born 28 Apr 1839 at French Rocks, Madras. She married
Charles Aylmer Liardet on 10 May 1871 at St Stephen’s Church, Ootacamund,
Madras. Charles was a captain in the Madras staff Corps.
9 Son Dowker born 29 Oct 1840 at Stephen’s Green.
10 Georgina Anna Dowker youngest daughter born 16 Oct 1845 at Malligaum. She
married James Girdlestone on 6 Dec 1864 at Hampstead parish church. James was
of New Street, Spring-gardens and Hampstead and the son of the Rev Charles
Girdlestone.
