Robert Holbeche Dolling eldest son of the Rev Bouverie William Dolling born circa 1809.
He was appointed a magistrate in 1840. He lived at Kilrea, Co Derry and was a landowner
and land agent owning nearly 4000 acres in the Counties Armagh and Down. He married
Eliza Mary Alexander on 22 Jan 1842 at St Peters in Thanet. Eliza was the third daughter of
Josias Du Pré Alexander, MP of Stone House St Peters, Isle of Thanet and Grosvenor Place,
London. They had at least nine children. Eliza died 2 Jan 1870 at Kilrea. Robert was a JP,
DL of Edenmore Co Down and died 28 Sep 1878 at 28 Gardiner’s Place, Dublin late of the
Manor House, Kilrea, Co Londonderry. He left 14k in personal estate.
1 Mary Emma Radclyffe Dolling eldest daughter born 22 Feb 1843 at Magheralin, Co
Down. She married James Head Staples at St Margaret’s Episcopal Church Braemar,
Aberdeenshire on 4 Aug 1883. James was a barrister and the son of Sir Nathaniel A
Staples, Bart of Lissan, Co Tyrone. By 1901 they were living at Lissan House. Mary
Emma died 15 Sep 1910 at Lissan, Cookstown. James died on 25 Aug 1917 without
issue and Lissan House passed to his brother Sir Robert Ponsonby Staples.
2 Elise Anne Radclyffe Dolling second daughter born 25 Jul 1844 at Magheralin, Co
Down. She lived in South Kensington worked among the poor and the prostitutes of
London and Portsmouth. She and her sister Geraldine founded a convalescent home
at Worthing in memory of their brother Robert in 1903 and Elise was superintendent.
She died unmarried in November 1917 at East Preston.
3 Adelaide Harriett Radclyffe Dolling third daughter born 9 May 1846 at Magheralin, Co
Down joined a religious order. Sister H Amitte died unmarried at East Preston on
11 Sep 1917.
4 Geraldine Bouverie Radclyffe Dolling born 17 Nov 1847 at Magheralin, Co Down worked
among the poor and the prostitutes of London and Portsmouth. She and her sister
Elize founded a convalescent home at Worthing in memory of their brother Robert in
1903. She died unmarried on 23 Aug 1929 at East Preston.
5 Josephine Maude Radclyffe Dolling born 22 Nov 1849 at Magheralin, Co Down was living
at Philbeach Mansions, Kensington in 1916 and ran a home for lady students particularly
drama students. She died unmarried in 1929 at East Preston.
6 Robert William Radclyffe Dolling eldest son born 10 Feb 1851 at Magheralin, Co Down.
He was educated at a preparatory school at Stevenage, Hertfordshire. From 1864 he
attended Harrow School and in 1868 matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He
returned in 1870 without graduating and helped his father in running the estate. He later
moved with his father to Gardiner’s Place in Dublin. In 1882 Robert enrolled at Salisbury
Theological College ordained deacon in 1883 becoming curate of Corscombe, Dorset. He
was appointed to St Martin's Mission at Holy Trinity, Stepney. He came into conflict with
the Anglican Church because over ritualist practices in church worship. He died a bachelor
on 15 May 1902.
7 Nina Caroline Radclyffe Dolling fifth daughter born 17 Apr 1852 at Magheralin, Co Down
received a bequest from her uncle William Bracken in 1891 and arranged improvement at
St Mary's Episcopal Church at Braemar in 1894 in his memory which included an iron
gateway and arch. She died unmarried on 16 Dec 1939 at Bournemouth and left £200 to
her maid Muriel Raffan.
8 Ulrica Douglass Radclyffe Dolling youngest daughter born 10 Nov 1853 died 15 Aug 1872
at Magheralin, Co Down.
9 Caledon Josias Radclyffe Dolling second son born 17 May 1857 at Monaghan. He attended
Harrow School. He was a land agent and married Harriette Anabel Crace on 30 Jan 1883 at
Camberwell, London. Harriette was the daughter of John Gregory Grace of Springfield,
Dulwich. They lived at 34 Mountjoy Square from1884 to 1894 and He and is sister Elisa
and Geraldine were on the committee of the Whitworth Hospital in Drumcondra. They
lived at Seapoint Manor from 1895 to 1899. Harriette was living at Shipborne Road,
Tonbridge in Kent in 1901. Harriette died 31 Jul 1909 at Folkestone, Kent. Caledon died
8 Jun 1916 at Kemesford Gardens, Earl’s Court following an accident on the street 10 days
earlier. He suffered a fractured thigh and succumbed to pneumonia.
1 Ulrica Margaret Radclyffe Dolling born 20 Jun 1884 at 34 Mountjoy Square. She was
attending Saint Marylebone School in Dorset Square London in 1901. She died
unmarried on 18 Aug 1969 aged 85 and was interred in Roselawn Crematorium.
2 Caledon Robert John Radclyffe Dolling born 1 Aug 1886 at 34 Mountjoy Square. He
went to Canada in 1910 and married Alma Victoria Clarke 22 Jul 1913 at Washington.
After enlisting in a Canadian Regiment, he received a commission in the Royal Irish
Rifles and later served as a 2nd lieutenant with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He was
wounded on a number of occasions was awarded the Military Cross in June 1916
for leading a night attack. He was killed in action on 20 Aug 1916 at Mametz Wood,
France.
Alma Victoria was a talented pianist and violinist and worked at the War Office in
central London. After the death of her husband, she volunteered with the Scottish
Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service as a stretcher bearer and field ambulance
orderly and worked at the front in France and in Greece. She married T Compton
Pakenham on 15 Jul 1920 at Brooklyn, New York and they had one son, separated
and Alma went back to live in Victoria, British Columbia. Here she had an affair
with the married Francis Mawsen Rattenbury. Her estranged husband divorced her
as Francis’ wife divorced him. Alma married Francis Mawsen Rattenbury (Rats) on
the 8 Apr 1925 at Washington. They had one son and they moved to Bournemouth.
Alma published a number of songs/music for violin.
In September 1934, she employed 18 year old George Percy Stoner as a chauffeur
and handyman, and he moved in to live with them. George and Alma began an affair.
Francis was brutally murdered on 28 Mar 1935 after he was struck multiple times in
the head with a wooden carpenter's mallet. Alma and George were jointly charged
with his murder. The jury acquitted Alma and convicted George. On being released
from prison, Alma committed suicide on 4 Jun 1935 aged 37. The case inspired both
a play and a film called ‘Cause Celebre.’ The film staring Helen Miren, David
Morrissey, Harry Andrews and David Suchet was released in 1987.
3 Mary Noel Radclyffe Dolling born 21 Dec 1888 at 34 Mountjoy Square died unmarried
in 1923 at Staines, Middlesex.
4 Dorothea Cecil Radclyffe Dolling born 16 Apr 1891 at 34 Mountjoy Square married
Geoffrey Dundas Luard on 11 Sep 1920 at Wintringham. Geoffrey was the son of Col
C H Luard and was later a clerk in the House of Lords. Dorothea died in 1930; no
issue found.
5 Harry Holbeche Radcliffe Dolling born 9 Jan 1893 at 34 Mountjoy Square. He enlisted
and was an officer in the pioneer battalion of the Ulster Division, Royal Irish Rifles. He
was wounded in 1917. He married Marguerite Hodge in 1922. After the war he worked
as a civil servant with the Colonial Office. They lived at Chertsey and had two children.
He was later a land agent and married Hazel Marion Radclyffe Staples. Hazel was the
daughter of Robert Ponsonby Staples. Hazel had trained as an air radio mechanic and
joined the WRNS, becoming a third officer. She worked with the Cunard Line as purser
on the Queen Mary and Caronia. Hazel inherited Lissan house and became its
Chatelaine.
