Francis Devine born circa 1837 son of Patrick Devine, a farmer and Fanny Rorke of Cavan.
He was a merchant/grocer of 42 Charlemont Street and married Helen Kiernan at the Pro
Cathedral on 1 Feb 1865. Helen was the daughter of Owen McKiernan, MD, surgeon and
Helen Louisa Worrell of Rockfield House, Buckfastleigh, Devon She was also the niece of
Bernard (Barney) McKiernan of Little Britain Street. Barney Kiernan died a bachelor on
14 Jan 1874 leaving 30k in personal estate. Francis was present at his death and his sole
executor.
Francis became the owner of ‘Barney Kiernans’ (Messrs B Kiernan & Co), a wine merchants of
8-10 Little Britain Street. This was the pub made famous by James Joyce with his chapter on
the ‘altercation with a truculent troglodyte in Bernard Kiernan's premises’. They moved to
Ardavon, Orwell Road, Rathgar circa 1874. Francis was a guardian of The South Dublin
Union, he also had public houses at Hawkins Street, D’Olier Street, North King Street and
Dorset Street. Francis died 22 Apr 1899 at Ardavon, Rathgar and is buried at Glasnevin. He
left 44k in personal estate. Helen died at Ardavon on 9 Feb 1907 and was buried at Glasnevin.
Ardavon was put up for sale in 1910.

unmarried on 13 Nov 1904 at Ardavon. Her brother Robert the informant.
2 Bernard Joseph Devine 18 Jun 1869 at 42 Charlemont Street. Bernard and his brother
Ernest were trading as B Kiernan & Co in 1907 and emigrated to Canada in 1908.
3 John Ernest Patrick (Ernest) Devine born 24 Jun 1871 at 42 Charlemont Street. Ernest
and his brother Bernard were trading as B Kiernan & Co in 1907 and emigrated to
Canada in 1908.
4 Frances Mary Helen Devine second daughter born 19 Jun 1874 at Ardavon, Rathgar was
living with her brother at Wilton Terrace in 1911. She died unmarried on 3 Mar 1915 at 5
Gilford Road, Sandymount.
5 Louisa Mary Rose Devine born 29 Sep 1877 at Ardavon.
6 Francis Edward Devine born 21 Nov 1878 at Ardavon, Rathfarnham. He was educated at
the Catholic University School on Leeson Street and was admitted a solicitor to the High
Court in 1903 after serving his apprenticeship with Valentine & W B Dunne. He founded
the firm of Horan and Devine in 1904 with offices at Stephen's Green and took over as sole
owner in 1912. The firm had offices at 12 Dame Street from 1905. He married Lilian Mary
Lee on 7 Nov 1923 at Corpus Christi Church, Maiden Lane, London. Lilian was the daughter
of the late Mathew Lee and Frances Bobbett of Co Kildare. They lived at Holly Park, Gilford
Road until 1926 when Lilian died on 1 Dec 1926 aged 36 from flu. He moved with his two
infant daughter to Dunamase from 1927 to 1936 and to Ardlui from 1936 to 1941. He died
a widower on 2 Feb 1956 at 1 Burlington Road. He left 6k in English estate, his executors his
solicitor and Yvonne Devine.
1 Mabel Katherine Devine born circa 1924 married Desmond McMurrough Joseph
Kavanagh at Chapelizod Church on 9 Sep 1942. Desmond was a surveyor of 1
Burlington Road and the son of William George Kavanagh.

7 Arthur Edward Devine born 3 Apr 1880 at Ardavon.
8 Mabel Catherine Devine born 28 Sep 1882 at Ardavon, Rathfarnham. She was a spinster
living with her brother at Wilton Terrace in 1911.
9 Edward Joseph Devine born 21 Feb 1884 at Ardavon, Rathgar graduated Royal Veterinary
College of Ireland. He joined the Army Veterinary Corps, British Expeditionary Forces. He
married Marjorie Blake on 7 Nov 1916 at Star of the Sea Church, Sandymount. Majorie was
the daughter of the late Charles Henry Blake of the Bridge House, Tuam and granddaughter
of the late Walter Blake of Meelick, Whitegate, Galway. He died at Pepys Road, Wimbledon
on 1 May 1936.
10 Helen Margaret Mary (Helena) Devine youngest daughter born 19 May 1885 at Ardavon. She
married James A Kiernan on 14 Nov 1910 at St Andrew’s, Westland Row. James was a solicitor
of Balinamore, Co Leitrim.
11 Robert Ronan Leon Devine youngest son born 9 Jul 1887 at Ardavon, Rathgar. He married
Norah Joyce on 11 Jun 1923 at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Donnybrook. Norah was the
daughter of the John Joyce of Marlborough Road.
