NAME Richmond Cottage/Dalguise
AREA LOCATION Monkstown Road
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838 - 1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of
Monkstown and it is annotated as Richmond Cottage and
unannotated respectively.
GENERAL Richmond Cottage, a mansion was for sale in 1841 on 8 ½ acres. It
commanded a view of Dublin Bay, Mount Anville and the Killiney Hills. The dining room and
drawing rooms were 25'x18'. It had a breakfast parlour, study, five bedrooms with dressing
closets. There was a larder, dairy, butlers pantry, china, cloak and water closets, servants
apartments and a large garden with fruit trees. It had stabling for six horses, two coach
houses, harness room enclosed in a large detached yard.
The name was changed from Richmond Cottage to Dalguise by Mrs Hart circa 1880. A five bay
two storey over basement villa set back from the Monkstown Road within extensive gardens.
It was approached by a long avenue (Clifton Lane) with outer gatehouse on Monkstown road
shared with Carrickbrennan. It also had an inner gatelodge. It was for sale, still on 8 ½ acres,
in 1912.
YEAR BUILT circa 1827 and rebuilt in 1880. In 1903 it as enlarged and rebuilt at a
cost of £4000. The lease is from 1827 for 99 years with a revision made
to extend the lease from 1926 for a further 73 years.
VALUATION In 1894 the valuation was 115 pounds and in the 1911 census it is
noted as having 21 rooms occupied by the family.
ARCHITECT Proposed new coach house and alterations to stable offices by
McCurdy & Mitchell, a proposed gatelodge designed by William M
Mitchell in 1881. House was rebuilt for Mrs Kennedy by Messrs J J
Phillips & Son in Belfast in 1903. New stables and outhouses same
year: Contractor/builder J Lowry & Son, Belfast.
