Richard James Dacres born circa 1799 at Totnes, St John's Devon. He was the son of the late Vice
Admiral Sir Richard Dacres and married Frances (Fanny) Thomas on 03.11.1840 at St Thomas'
Church, St John's, Newfoundland. Fanny was the only daughter of Henry P Thomas a merchant of
St John’s. Richard was was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and then entered the
Royal Artillery. He was a captain in 1840 and in 1855 he became Colonel and Major-General,
General in 1858 and was on the retired list in 1877.
Richard was a “Master Gunner” or senior artillery officer of England. He served through the Crimea
campaign and he commanded the artillery until the end of the war. In December 1856 Sir Richard
was appointed Commander of the Artillery in Ireland and during that time Sir Richard and Lady
Dacres lived at St Bridget’s, Clonskeagh.
From 1859 he was Commandant at Woolwich until 1865. He was made a Commander of the Legion
of Honour after the battle of Sebastopol and in 1881 was appointed to the post of Constable of the
Tower. In 1871 Richard, Fanny and her niece Fanny were living at Beckenham, Kent. In 1881 Richard,
Fanny and her 3 nieces Fanny, Edith and Annie were living in Hove, Sussex. Sir Richard died
06.12.1886 at Palmeira Square, Brighton. He was buried Hurst Pierpoint, probate to Richard James
Thomas. In 1891 Fanny was living at Beckenham, Kent with her nephew Charles and niece Annie.
