Arthur Cunynghame born 3 Aug 1812 at Oakley., Hampshire. He was the third son of Colonel
Sir David Cunynghame, 5th Baronet of Milncraig and his first wife, Mary Thurlow. He joined
the Army in 1830 after purchasing a commission as a second lieutenant in the King's Royal
Rifle Corps, 60th Rifles. In 1845, he was promoted to major and on 13 Sep 1845, he married
Frances Elizabeth Hardinge. Frances was the daughter of Sir Henry Hardinge, Governor
General of India. In November 1846 he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the 13th Light
Infantry. They lived at Mount Dillon from 1868 until 1872. He was commander of the troops
in the Dublin Division from 1866 and became sir Arthur in 1869. He left Mount Dillon in 1872
to take up a command in South Africa. From 1873 to 1878, he commanded the forces at the
Cape of Good Hope and served through the Xhosa Wars and was appointed Lieutenant-
Governor of the Colony. In 1877 he was promoted to general and in 1878, he was appointed
Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. Frances was invested with the Imperial Order
of the Crown of India by the Queen in 1879. Arthur was placed on the retired list in 1881
and died 10 Mar 1884 at the Red Sea near Aden. He was returning home from India after a
pleasure tour with his eldest daughter. He was survived by two sons and three daughters.
A memorial was erected at Winchester Cathedral in his memory. Frances Elizabeth Lady
Cunynghame died on 9 Jul 1894 aged 70 at Fordcombe, Tunbridge Wells.
1 Stillborn daughter Cunynghame in December 1846 at Southpark, Pedhurst, Kent the
seat of Viscount Hardinge.
2 Lavinia Augusta Charlotte Cunynghame (d. 31 Mar 1922) married Capt. George
Charles Williams-Freeman in London in 1883. George was the son of Frederick Peere
Williams-Freeman. They had three sons, and two daughters. George was chief
constable of Shropshire and died in December 1905 aged 49. Lavinia died
31 Mar 1922 at Portsmouth.
1 Major Anthony Peere Williams-Freeman eldest son died of wounds in April
1916 aged 28.
3 Emily Caroline Thurlow Cunynghame born 27 Jul 1851 St John the Baptist Penshurst,
Kent. She married Charles Walter Oddie at the English Embassy in Paris on 4 Aug 1888.
Charles was the son of the late Rev George Oddie of Aston, Hertfortshire. Emily died
13 Jan 1941 at Winchester.
4 Henry Hardinge Samuel Cunynghame born July 1848 in London. He was a barrister
of Hurlingham Lodge, Fulham and appointed secretary to the Judicial Commission in
1888. He married Emily Harriette Prescott, on 21 Jun 1893 at St Mary’s Abbotts,
Kensington. Emily was the daughter of Colonel Arthur Prescott. He received a CB in
1908. Sir Henry, former permanent legal under secretary died 3 May 1935 at
Eastbourne.
5 Mary Sarah Hardinge Cunynghame baptised 29 Aug 1852 at the Royal Barracks,
Dublin.
6 Arthur Hardinge David Cunynghame younger son born 17 Nov 1853 at Dublin founded
the Fulham Liberal Club. He married Alexandra Isabel Scott on 25 Jun 1892 at All Saints,
Ennismore Gardens. Alexandra was the daughter of the late Alexander Scott. They had
two sons, and a daughter. Arthur died from pneumonia on 14 Nov 1917 at a
Winchester Nursing home.
