Cumming family of Roebuck Grove
John Cumming married Ann Lewis on 14 Aug 1808 at St Andrew's Church. He was a
bookseller in partnership with Patrick Wogan at 16 Ormond Quay from 1809 until Patrick’s
death in 1816. John was a wholesale bookseller and stationer of 16 Lr Ormond Quay by
1810 and by 1813 John was advertising as a publisher. He published law books and school
books. He acted as agent to many English and Scottish publishers. He was the wholesaler
for Maria Edgeworth’s novels and the Waverley Novels by Sir Walter Scott published by
Bentley of London. By 1832 John they were living at Roebuck Grove. In 1846 Anne had a
ballad ‘in the Scottish style’ dedicated to her by Mr Barton of the Chapel. They same year
he went into partnership with Clement Ferguson who borrowed money to pay the 5k John
wanted for a 50% stake in the business. However, John guaranteed Clement’s loan using
the stock of the company. In 1847 he was bankrupt and in 1848 the furniture and interest
in the lease of Roebuck Grove as well as his premises at Ormond Quay and warehouses at
Swift’s Row were but up for sale by the Court of Bankruptcy. Anne died at Leeson Terrace
in September 1850 and John died at the same place on 9 Nov 1850. No issue found.
