Thomas Culleton born circa 1820 son of John Culleton, a shoemaker joined the Royal Irish
Constabulary in 1839 (service number 3491). He was a sub constable and married Sarah
Cunningham on 30 Apr 1856 at the registrar’s office Kilkenny on 30 Apr 1856. Sarah was the
daughter of John Cunningham, a shoemaker. Both with an address at Walkin Street, Kilkenny
City. Thomas retired in 1849 and was an RIC pensioner living in America in 1865 when his
son John was born at Mountrath. He kept shop in the 1870s and was a sexton from 1873
until his death. He died 20 Nov 1885 at Mountrath.
1 Elizabeth Culleton born circa 1857 married Thomas Bates on 13 Oct 1873 at Mountrath.
Thomas was a widower and shopkeeper of Mountrath and the son of Lodge Bates, a
parish clerk.
2 John Thomas Culleton born 12 Nov 1865 at Mountrath. John was a commercial clerk
living at 45 Arranmore Terrace, NCR and married Elizabeth Henry on 13 Sep 1892 at St
Paul’s Church of Ireland, North King Street, Dublin. Elizabeth was living at 25 Prussia
Street and was the youngest daughter of the late James Henry. They lived at 17 Grove
Park, Rathmines from 1908 to 1925 and John was a shop manager (provision trade). By
1925 they were at the same address but also had a second address of Rockfield,
Dundrum which they were still listed at in 1932. John worked for Messrs Andrews &
Company, Dame Street and was on the board of the Irish Clerks and Assistants
Association. John died at Grove Park on 16 Jan 1937 at the Adelaide Hospital late of 17
Grove Park and is buried at Mount Jerome. Elizabeth died at 6 Henly Park, Dundrum on
14 Apr 1946 and is buried with her husband.
1 Constance Elizabeth Culleton born 15 Sep 1893 at 15 Derrynane Parade. Charlotte
Henry present at birth. She married Archibald Malcolm on 24 Aug 1915 at the
Church of St Mathias’. Archibald living at Clontarf was a railway clerk and the son
of James L Malcolm, a contractor. He was later an accountant with the railway and
they were living Naphra, Ballybrack in 1941.
1 Hazel Myra Malcolm born 24 July 1916 at 17 Grove Park. She married John
Harold Douglas at Killiney Parish Church on 2 Sep 1941. John was a company
director and the son of James Green Douglas, a company director and
politician and his wife Georgina Culley. The company John Douglas and sons,
draper was based at Wexford Street. John was a politician and an
independent member of Seanad Éireann. He was nominated by the Taoiseach
to the 8th Seanad in 1954, replacing his late father.
2 Alice Irene (Irene) Culleton born 20 Jun 1895 at 15 Derrynane Parade. She married
John Newell on 23 Mar 1920 at St Mathias’ Church. John a commercial clerk
living at Northbrook Terrace and was the son of Samuel Newell, a railway clerk. They
had two children and Alice died 10 Apr 1957 at Loughlinstown Hospital, late of Westfield
Park, Bray.
3 David Wallace Culleton born 20 Aug 1898 at 27 Berkeley Road died same place on
1 Oct 1898.
4 Lillian Olive Culleton born 3 Sep 1899 at Lower Gloucester Street was an apprentice
in the drapery business in 1911. She married Thomas Gerrard Purcell on
15 Sep 1920 at St Mathias’ Church. Thomas of Zion Hill was a medical student and
the son of John Purcell, a merchant.
1 Kenneth Gerrard Purcell born 29 Nov 1921 at Mount Street Crescent.
5 Evelyn Muriel Culleton born 8 Aug 1901 at 27 Berkeley Road. She married Percy
Reginald John on 1 Aug 1921 at St Mathias’ Church. Percy was a clerk living at
Dartmouth Square and the son of Samuel Page John, a clerk. They had one daughter.
Percy worked in insurance and died at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital on 8 Apr 1939.
Evelyn secondly married Sidney Henchie on 19 Jul at St Ann’s Church, Dublin. Sidney, a
widower was a dentist and the son of the late William Henchie, a commercial traveller.
They lived at Sloperton, Dun Laoghaire.
6 Lucy Florence Hilda Culleton born 1 Oct 1904 at 27 Berkeley Road. She married David
William Pedlow on 3 Mar 1926 at St Mathias’ Church, Dublin. David was a dairy farmer
of Briarley, Churchtown and the son of David Pedlow, a dairy farmer.
7 William Henry (Harry) Culleton born 7 Nov 1908 at 17 Grove Park, Rathmines. He was
living in Galway and a superintendent Omnibus depot with the GSR and married
Concepta McInerney from Loughrea on 5 Jun 1934 at St Michael’s Dun Laoghaire.
Concepta was the daughter of Michael McInerney.
8 Daughter Culleton born 28 Nov 1910 with spina bifida and hydrocephalus at 17 Grove
Park, Rathmines died same place on 30 Nov 1910.
3 Alice Annette Culleton married Harry Jager on 4 Aug 1886 at Mountrath. Harrm was a house
painter and the son of the late Harrm Jager, a sea captain of Amsterdam, Holland.
