William* Crawley born circa 1787 married Margaret Brown in 1841. Margaret was the
daughter of Francis Brown of Friars Croft, Irvine in Scotland. William formerly of
Mansfieldtown and late of 44 Gloucester Street, Dublin died 12 May 1861 aged 74 and was
buried at Mount Jerome. Margaret died 25 Aug 1865.
1 William born circa 1844 in England. He married Ellen Maria McCarthy at the Parish
Church of St George’s Dublin on 18 Apr 1870. He was principal of Queen’s Service
Academy of 94 Lower Gardiner Street. He tutored boys for government exams and
also published handbooks through Longman & Co Dublin one being ‘The Handbook
of Competitive Examinations for Admission to Every Department of Her Majesty's
Service’. The academy moved to Ely Place in 1875 and it was here he tutored Henry
Gloster Armstrong (who was later a British diplomat and spy). Ellen was resident at
101 Sandymount Strand Road and the daughter of John McCarthy of, Desart Serges,
Co Cork. William was a freemason and grand treasurer from 1904 to 1915. He was
the author and researcher of ‘Caementaria Hibernica’, a history of the masons in
Ireland which he had privately printed. They lived at Newtownpark Avenue in 1901,
Seapoint Manor from 1902 to 1905 and moved to Merton Park, Sandford in 1906.
Ellen died at Merton Park on 12 Jan 1908 aged 63 and William died same place on
13 Mar 1916. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Francis Hubert McCarthy Chetwode Crawley eldest son born 19 Apr 1871 at
3 Upper Temple Street, Dublin. He entered Shrewsbury School and was in the
School House under Moss. He attended Caius College, Cambridge and took
his BA in 1892. He married Jane Dodd on 4 Apr 1905 at St Mary’s, Rutland
Square in a quiet ceremony with just family invited. Francis was an ophthalmic
surgeon and Jane was the daughter of Sergeant at Law, William Hueston Dodd,
barrister and Serjeant-at-law. He qualified MB in 1896 and took the MD in 1900.
He spent time in Vienne and Berlin and on his return to Dublin worked as a
surgeon at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear and later worked at The City of Dublin
Hospital and at the Rotunda. In listed and was a captain in the Royal Army
Medical Corps. He died on the 15 Dec 1935 at Fitzwilliam Place and Jane died on
24 Sep 1947 at Burrow Road, Sutton. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 William Desmond Chetwode (Desmond) Crawley only son born
30 Jul 1906 at Baggot Street baptised at St Stephens Church. He was a
sales correspondent married Harriett Louise (Lallie) Wilson on 19 Apr 1932
at St Ann’s Church, Dublin. Lallie was living at Woodville, Dundrum and the
daughter of Frederick Wilson, a captain in the mercantile marine. She was
also the adopted daughter of Mrs F B Switzer of Woodville, Dundrum.
2 Ellen Elizabeth Chetwode (Betty) Crawley born 3 Mar 1909 at Baggot Street
baptised at St Stephen’s Church. She was resident at 16 Garville Avenue,
Rathgar and married Gerald Fitzgibbon on 11 Apr 1936 at St Peter’s Church,
Dublin. Gerald was a civil engineer and the son of Gerald Fitzgibbon, a
supreme court judge.
2 William Stoker Chetwode Crawley second son born 17 Aug 1873 at Lower Gardiner
Street. He was educated at Christ Church, Cambridge. He was a partner in Dr
Strangeways school at Stephens Green and in 1906 took over the school. He was a
barrister living at Ely Place and married Eleanor Agnes Obré on 3 Apr 1907 at Christ
Church, Leeson Park. Eleanor was the eldest daughter of Edward S Obré of
Dartmouth Square and the granddaughter of the late Ralph S Obré of Armagh. In
1911 Eleanor was 38 and they had no children. He was a director of Stephen’s School
with his father in 1915. William, a school teacher died 14 Jan 1941 at Sir Patrick Dun’s
Hospital late of Sandford Road. He was buried at Mount Jerome. Eleanor died
28 May 1944 at Sandford Road and was buried with her husband.
3 Herbert Capel Kennedy Crawley born 1 Mar 1879 at 66 Mountjoy Square joined
the Royal Militia in 1898. He was a retired barrister and died unmarried on
13 Mar 1957 at Baggot Street Hospital late of 184 Clonliffe Road, Drumcondra. He
left personal estate of 11K and made bequests to his brother Chetwode and his
nephew Desmond of Manland Avenue in Harpenden.
4 Chetwode George Green Crawley youngest son born 14 Jul 1880 at Mountjoy
Square joined the Royal Artillery. Major Crawley married Nessa Luke on
7 Sep 1915 at Bryce Presbyterian Church, Coleyville, Jamaica. Nessa was the
younger daughter of Rev James Luke of Jamaica and the granddaughter of Borthwick
Watson of Ardfern, Falkirk. He was a wireless officer during WWI and attained the
rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He then worked for the wireless telegraph section of
the General Post Office as a wireless inspector. He was a member of the Imperial
Wireless Telegraph Commission and in 1931 published 'From Telegraphy to
Television'. In 1937 he was appointed OBE in the Coronation honours list.
1 Desmond John Chetwode Crawley born 2 Jun 1917 at Croydon was
a civil servant and later a diplomat. He served as administrator under
the Raj to the Commonwealth. He married Daphne Lesley Mockett at
Madras in 1945.
* William’s younger brother John died on 4 May 1843 aged 47 and was buried at Mount
Jerome. There is also possibly another brother James whose son Joseph married Francis
Knaggs in 1858 and whose children use Chetwode in their name. Also remembered on
the headstone is an Anastasia Crawley 1789 to 1844.
