Charles Cosgrave born circa 1831 son of Thomas Cosgrave, dairy man. He was living at Windy
Arbour and married Ellen Neill on 28 Feb 1870 at SS Peter’s & Mary’s Church, Rathmines.
Ellen was living at Cullenswood and was the daughter of James Neill, a dairy man. Charles was
a dairy owner of Windy Arbour, Dundrum. He died at his home at Barn Elms Cottage,
Churchtown on 28 May 1901 and left £829 in personal estate. He was buried at St Nahi’s,
Churchtown. American and Australian newspapers were asked to copy the death notice. Ellen
ran the diary after the death of her husband and also opened a butchers shop in 28 Elm Grove,
Ranelagh (117/119 Ranelagh Road). They later opened shops at Richmond Street and 23 Upper
Ormond Quay which traded a E Cosgrave & Sons until 1941. Cosgrave sausages were available
throughout Ireland and they had a fleet of delivery vans. Ellen died 15 May 1929 at 37 Upper
Beechwood Avenue, the residence of her daughter and was buried with her husband.

3 Thomas Cosgrave born 14 Nov 1873 at Windy Arbour living with his mother in
Churchtown in 1911. He married Esther Cullen of Dunville Avenue, Ranelagh on
19 Jun 1916 at The Church of the Holy name, Rathmines. Esther was the daughter of
Peter Cullen, a gardener. Thomas was a dairy proprietor of Ranelagh and died
30 Jul 1935 at 113 Ranelagh.

4 Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cosgrave born 25 Feb 1875 at Windy Arbour. She married John Byrne
on 18 Feb 1903 at Rathfarnham Church. John was a dairy keeper of Haddington Road
and the son of Daniel Byrne, a dairy keeper.
5 Catherine (Kate) Cosgrave born 8 Sep 1876. She died unmarried on 30 Sep 1902 at
Barn Elms Cottage and was buried at Churchtown.
6 Anastatia Cosgrave born 3 Apr 1878 at Windy Arbour. She married Christopher Castles
on 8 Sep 1909 at Rathfarnham Church. Charles was a sergeant in the RIC and living at
Dundrum Barracks. He was the son of Henry Castle ex RIC and was next posted to Athy.
Christopher was later a commercial traveller and they had a least seven children.

7 James Cosgrave born 31 Mar 1879 at Windy Arbour. He was a butcher of Churchtown
and married Mary Teresa (Daisy) Fox on 5 Feb 1911 at St Anne’s Church Tallaght. Mary
was the daughter of William Fox a grocer of Jobstown. James was later a dairyman of
Mountain View and they had at least six children. Mary died at Mountain view on
10 Apr 1940 and was buried at Mount Jerome. James died 24 Jul 1958 and was buried
with his wife.

9 William Cosgrave born 5 Dec 1883 at Windy Arbour. He was a dairyman and married
Clare Rooney on 6 Jun 1906 at Drumcondra. Clare was living at Annadale Avenue,
Fairview and was the daughter of Michael Rooney, a dairyman. They lived at Millbrook,
Rathfarnham and later Oldfield House, Rathfarnham. They had at least nine children.
10 Bridget (Bride) Cosgrave born 5 Jul 1885 at Windy Arbour living with her mother in
Churchtown in 1911. She married James Casey of Cruagh on 9 Sep 1911 at Rathfarnham
Church. James was a farmer and dairy proprietor and the son of James Casey, a farmer.
They had at least seven children.

12 Philip Joseph (Phil) Cosgrave (twin) born 7 Jun 1888 at Windy Arbour living with his mother
in Churchtown in 1911. Philip of Barn Elms dairy farm married Christina Cooney of Belmont
Avenue on 24 Oct 1924. Christina was the daughter of Christopher Cooney, a coachman.
He was living at Barn Elms Churchtown in 1943.
13 Eleanor Mary (Lena) Cosgrave (twin) born 7 Jun 1888 at Windy Arbour living with her mother
in Churchtown in 1911. Helena married John Murphy on 14 Sep 1914 at Rathfarnham Church.
John living in Dundrum was with the RIC and the son of Denis Murphy a farmer.
14 Joseph Cosgrave born 17 Jul 1889 at Windy Arbour living with his mother in Churchtown in
1911. He died 25 Nov 1912 at the Hospice, Harold’s Cross and was buried at Churchtown.
15 Peter John Cosgrave third youngest son born 21 Jan 1891 at Windy Arbour living with his
mother in Churchtown in 1911. He was a butcher and died unmarried on 24 Apr 1924 at
28 Elm Grove, Ranelagh. His sister Helena was the informant and he was buried at
Churchtown cemetery.
16 Valentine (Val) Cosgrave born 14 Feb 1892 at Windy Arbour. He was a victualler of 28 Elm
Grove, Ranelagh and married Rose Cosgrave Rose on 9 Aug 1922 at Booterstown Church.
Rose was the daughter of James Cosgrave, a carpenter of Convent Lodge, Merrion. Rose
died 3 Sep 1924 aged 24 and was buried at Deansgrange. He opened a bacon killing and
curing premises to the rear of their building.
1 Bernard (Benny) Cosgrave born 20 Aug 1923 in Dublin. He married Ann Sharpe on
7 May 1950 at San Francisco. Ann was the third daughter of John Sharpe of Bridge
House, Roscrea, Co Tipperary.
Val was a victualler and secondly married Elizabeth Cosgrave on 15 May 1935 at Donnybrook
Church. He was living at Roebuck Hall and Elizabeth was living at Morehampton Road and
was also his sister in law, the daughter of James Cosgrave. They had a number of children
and allowed dances to be run in the barn in the late 1950s. Elizabeth died 18 Sep 1960 at
Roebuck Hall aged 58 and was buried at Deansgrange. The land around Roebuck Hall was
sold for development and Val moved to 28 The Palms which was built in the grounds. Val, a
retired company director died 4 May 1968 at The Palms, Roebuck and was buried at
Deansgrange.
17 Andrew (Andy) Cosgrave born 13 Nov 1893 at Windy Arbour living with his mother in
Churchtown in 1911 and with his brother Philip at Barn Elms in 1935.
18 Lucy Cosgrave born December 1894 died 23 Jan 1895 at Windy Arbour.
