Austin Cornwall born circa 1824 son of John Cornwall of Rutland Square and Brownstown House,
Co Meath and Dora Clutterbuck. He married Margaret Carleton Joyce Magill on 19 Dec 1850 at
Carrickfergus Parish Church. Margaret was the only daughter of Andrew Cowan Magill of
Kingstown, Jamaica. They lived at Charlton, Dundrum from 1871 to 1875 and from1879 to 1883
renting it out in between. He put Charlton and the furniture up for sale in 1883. Austin was a JP
and a member of the Carrickfergus Urban Council. Austin retired and they were living in Bray in
1901. Margaret died 25 Jan 1902 from influenza and was buried at Deansgrange. Her niece H M
Cornwall present at death. Austin died 27 Dec 1906 at Novara House, Bray and was buried with
his wife.
1 Margaret Carleton Cornwall born 13 Nov 1851 at Glynn Park, Carrickfergus married Walton
Thomas Roberts Atkin on 25 Aug 1875 at St Peters Church, Dublin. Walton was the son of
John Atkin, solicitor and his wife Georgina Roberts. Margaret died at Belfast on 5 Feb 1885.
Major Walton Atkin 23 Oct 1897 at Hastings.
2 Austina Winifred Cornwall youngest daughter born 12 Jun 1869 at 43 Rutland Square
married Captain George B Elmitt, of the Antrim Artillery, Sothern Division on 6 May 1896 at
St Stephen’s Westbourne Park, London. George was the second son of the late John Elmitt
of Mavis Enderby, Lincolnshire. George died at Novara House on 26 Jul 1905 aged 40 and
was buried at Deansgrange. Austina a widow living in Bay in 1911 with her children. Austina
died 25 Nov 1948 at Florence Terrace, Bray.
1 Austin Joyce Elmitt eldest son born 9 Mar 1897 at the Scotch Quarter, Carrickfergus.
He was educated at Aravon School and Trinity College. He enlisted and served with
the 2nd Scottish Rifles and was a recipient of the MC. He was killed in action
24 Nov 1917. He is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, Nord, France
and the Aravon memorial.
2 George Cartleton Brookbey Elmitt born 7 Mar 1898 at the Scotch Quarter, Carrickfergus.
He was living in Bray and Aravon School enlisted in 1915 and served with the 16th
Division, Royal Irish Rifles, 7th battalion. He was reported missing in action on the
16 Aug 1917. His body was not found and the British war office issued the official death
notice on the 19 Sep 1919 and he is remembered on the Bray Memorial.
