William Smith born circa 1795 son of William Smith Cawthorn, near Barnesly and Ann Kirke of
Cowley Manor. He married Mary Ann MacKenzie on 24 May 1828 at the Cathedral Church of
St Peter & St Paul, Sheffield. Mary Ann was the daughter of the late Rev Alexander MacKenzie
of Sharrow Head, Sheffield and incumbent of St Paul’s, Sheffield. They had thirteen children.
Mary Ann’s mother; Sarah died at Cliffe House in 1836. In 1838 William, a solicitor was
auditor of Wortley Poor Law Guardians and later a director of Sheffield Union Bank. They
moved to Barnes Hall in 1849 on the death of his father. Mary Ann died at Barnes Hall on
22 Jan 1874 and was buried in Ecclesfield. William died same place on 30 Oct 1888 and was
interred in the vault as Ecclesfield. with his wife and four of their children.
1 Sarah Elizabeth Smith eldest daughter born 1829 died at Cliffe House on 31 May 1849.
2 Francis Patrick Smith born circa 1836 in Ecclesfield inherited Barnes Hall. He married
Margaret Scott Gatty and had nine children. He died on 30 Aug 1919 at Barnes Hall.
1 William McKenzie Smith of Barnes Hall. He was Lt. Colonel of the Queens Own
Yorkshire Dragoons and President of the Law Society and married Lady Mabel
Fitzwilliam. Mabel was the daughter of William Wentworth Fitzwilliam, Viscount
Milton, the eldest son of William Wentworth-FitzWilliam, 6th Earl FitzWilliam.
Mabel was a politician and social reformer.
3 Arthur Smith was born on 14 April 1843. He was the son of William Smith. He married
Jane Stoney on 19 Sep 1867. Jane was the daughter of Major General George Butler
Stoney and Sarah Howard Ormond. They lived at Hempstead. Arthur died on
2 Nov 1870 at age 27.
1 Herbert Stoney Smith joined the army and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He died 22 Oct 1915.
4 Colin MacKenzie Smith, eight son and ninth child born 1847 at Cliffe House, Wortley,
Yorkshire. He spent his early years at Barmes Hall, a property purchased by his
grandfather in 1823 and rebuilt in 1824. Colin was living at Dykes Hall, Sheffield when he
married Wilhelmina Ruth Butler Stoney on 15 Oct 1889 at Christ Church, Leeson Park.
Wilhelmina born 13 Jan 1865 at 15 Leeson Park was living at 72 Waterloo Road and was the
youngest daughter of Major General George Butler Stoney and Sarah Howard Ormond. She
was the granddaughter of Richard Falkiner Stoney and Jane Butler of Portland Park in North
Tipperary. They were married by the Bishop of Cashel and received over 200 wedding gifts.
She was given away by her father and had six bridesmaids. Rev A Kirke Smith, brother of
the bridegroom assisted. They spent their honeymoon in Italy. Colin was a solicitor and
partner in Smith, Smith and Elliott. The lived at Dykes Hall after they married and then
moved to Oakwood Hall in Rotherham. Colin retired in 1913 to Devon and handed over
Oakwood Hall to the state for use as a hospital during the war. He was a keen sportsman
and a member of Sheffield RSPCA and RSPCC. Colin died on 11 Feb 1924 at Seacroft,
Exmouth and left 46k in personal estate.
Wilhelmina leased Portland Park, Lorrha* from relative Major Charles Kemble Butler-Stoney
for 5 years at a rent of £275 in 1928. She opened the Park for garden fetes, fundraiser and
for parish and charitable purposes. In 1932 left Lorrha to live at Elms, Mount Merrion where
she died on 5 Nov 1935. She left 33k in personal estate, 1k plus a third of the residue was left
to her companion Elizabeth McCully. She is buried in Ecclesfield.
1 Duncan MacKenzie Smith born 19 Aug 1890 at Dykes Hall baptised at St Mary’s
Ecclesfield on 20 Aug 1890 died an infant.
5 Arnold Kirke Smith born 23 Apr 1850 took Holy orders. He officiated at the marriage of his
brother Colin.
*Lorrha was handed over to the Emmanual Home (part of the Bethany Home in Orwell Road) in 1938
to be used as an orphanage. Locals were not too keen on the idea believing that it involved Catholic
children who were being proselytised, and it was burned down in 1938.
