George Clews born circa 1781 at Warwickshire married Sally Finch in 1823. They lived at
Beaver's Kiln in Farnham. George was a gardener and died in 1845. Sally died in 1857.
1 Hannah Clews born circa 1824 in Farnham, Surrey never married was living with her
sister at Devonshire Road, Greenwich in 1901.
2 Elizabeth Clews born circa 1826 in Farnham, Surrey was a dressmaker and married
Henry Moses in 1855 at Lewisham. Henry was a florist and they lived at Devonshire
Road Greenwich where they ran The Sylvan Nurser. She was a widowed florist in 1901.
1 Henry J Moses born circa 1856 was a florist of Greenwich.
3 Martha Clews born circa 1828 in Surrey married Arthur James Tully on 9 Dec 1847 at
Farnham.
4 George Clews born circa 1830. He was a baker living with his family at High Street,
Alton, Hampshire in 1871.
5 William Clews born 1832 died May 1837 at Beavers Kiln.
6 James Clews born 24 Aug 1834 at Farnham. He was a gardener working at Cloone
Rectory and married Mary Davis on 5 Mar 1864 at Kells parish church. Mary was a
servant at Headfort House and the daughter of Samuel Davis, a hatter. James worked
as a gardener for Henry Thompson at Clonard from 1864 to 1869 winning numerous
prizes for fruit and flowers. He was elected a practical member of the RHS in 1867. By
1873 James was head gardener at Rockingham working for the Harman family and
claimed he was the first to grow the Bramley apple in Ireland. He supervised the laying
out of new gardens. Mary was involved in parish life at the local Presbyterian church.
Mary died at Rockingham on 19 Apr 1900. In 1903 as the oldest employee, he welcomed
the Lord Lieutenant (William Ward, The Right Honourable, The Earl of Dudley) to
Rockingham on behalf of the Stafford family when the LL took up residence at
Rockingham. He was much in demand as a judge at horticultural shows and sponsored
the presentation prize for the best looking baby at the Boyle Horticultural Show. He had
retired by 1911 but was still giving on the estate. James died late of Abbey Ville, Boyle,
Roscommon at his nephew’s home; The Nursery, 45, Devonshire Road, Greenwich on
27 Feb 1915. They left no issue.
7 Sarah Clews born circa 1837 at Farnham, Surrey died same place in 1842.
8 Charlotte Clews born circa 1839 at Beavers Kiln, Farnham, Surrey married William Wells
on 25 Dec 1864 at Farnham.
9 John Clews born circa 1840 at Farnham Surrey. He married Eliza Annie Springall in 1864
at Greenwich. He was a gardener to Thomas Taylour, 2nd Marquess of Headfort at
Headfort House, Kells. The family returned to England ans were living at Lewisham and
had two further children. Their daughter Annie returned to Ireland to live with her uncle
James at Rockingham. John died 8 Sep 1892 at Lewisham. Eliza died in 1915.
1 Thomas Springall Clews born 8 Oct 1875 at Headfort. He was a house painter and
married Elizabeth Willoughby in 1898 in Lewisham.
2 Margaret Eliza Clews born 15 Jul 1877 at Headfort, Kells married William R
Whatman in 1900. William was a hairdresser and they lived at Lewisham with
their two children.
3 Annie Marie Clews born 29 Jul 1882 at Headfort was living with her uncle James at
Rockingham Demesne by 1901. She married widower John Joseph Rodden on
26 Jun 1912 at Boyle. The family emigrated to New Zealand in 1924 their four children
and John’s son from his first marriage.
1 Thora C Rodden born 21 April 1913 at Carrick on Shannon.
2 Albert Edward Rosborough Rodden born 23 Jul 1914 at Carrick on Shannon.
3 Phyllis Rodden born 23 Nov 1916 at Carrick on Shannon.
