James Clandillon born circa 1819 joined the RIC circa 1838. He married Elizabeth Armstrong
in December 1850. Elizabeth died 29 Nov 1870 at Athy and was buried at Toberare
Cemetery. John was head constable in Athy and retired in 1870 on a pension of £50pa. He
was appointed sub sanitary officer with Athy Union. He died 22 Jan 1886 at Athy and was
buried with his wife.

2 William Armstrong Clandillon born circa 1854 at Queen’s County. He was a teacher at
Lough Cultra National School and married Joana Little, a teacher living at Lough Cultra
on 28 Apr 1877 at Gort. Joana was the daughter of the late Michael Little, timber
merchant. They were living at Loughculta in 1901 and Joanne’s younger sister Bridget
Little also taught at the school. Lough Cutra was recognised as a Garden National
School in 1884, with focus on botany and horticulture; a school garden being a key
feature. Johanna had retired from teaching by 1911 and six of their children had
survived. Johanna died 27 Apr 1916 at Loughcutra. William died same place on
7 Mar 1918 and is buried at Shanaglish.
1 James Clandillon born 6 Jun 1878 at Loughcutra in Galway. He was educated at
St Flannan’s College, Ennis, and the Royal University, Dublin. He taught in
Clonmel Technical School from 1903 to 1905 and Clonakilty agricultural college
from 1905 to 1912. He married Margaret Hannagan from Láithreach, An Déise
on 19 Apr 1904 at Dungarvan Church. Margaret was the daughter of Michael
Hannagan, a carpenter. Both signed the register ‘as Gaeilge’ He joined the
National Health Insurance Office in 1912 as a divisional inspector, when in 1922
it was transferred to the Department of Defence he became a civil servant. In
October 1925 The Department of Posts and Telegraphs re invited applicants to
apply for a post of a station manager. They were looking for ‘a man of broad
views and wide sympathies, interested in life, Irish literature and culture, with
a good knowledge of the Irish language’. Seamus was appointed the first
director of broadcasting with 2RN (later known as Radio Eireann) on a salary of
£750pa.
He was a Gaelic scholar and talented vocalist and he adjudicated at Feiseanna.
Maighreid was also a talented vocalist, a classically trained soprano and native
Irish speaker. Together they published a book of Irish songs ‘Londubh an
chairn': songs of Irish Gaels’ in 1927. A review, by way of a letter to the editor,
from Donal Joseph O'Sullivan, an Irish academic, folk-music historian and
politician was published in The Irish Stateman’s Newspaper edited By George
William Russell Æ. The Clandillons took a libel case against the newspaper, the
editor and Donal O’Sullivan. The jury could not reach a decision, and the costs
were shared. He was retired as director of broadcasting in 1934 and returned
to work at the Department of Local Government and Public Health. Seamus
died 21 Apr 1944 at Grangegorman Mental Hospital late of San Salvador,
Newtown Park and left 3k in personal estate. Maighreid died aged 72 on
27 Jan 1952 at the Mater Hospital, late of Clondalkin.

before transferring to the GPO in Dublin. Nora died unmarried on 3 Feb 1957 at
Barrington’s Hospital Limerick late of The Cottage, Gort and is buried at Shanaglish.
4 Elizabeth Mary (Lizzie/later Eilis) Clandillon born 16 Dec 1881 at Loughcutra was a
monitress living with her parents in 1901. Elizabeth a retired national school teacher
died unmarried at the Augustinian Convent, Rathoath on 7 Mar 1968 late of The
Cottage, Gort.
5 Michael Clandillon born 1 Nov 1882 at Loughcutra was a school teacher living with his
parents in 1911. He succeeded his father as school principal. He married Margaret
Hanratty from Drogheda on 7 Sep 1922. Margaret was a National School teacher and
the daughter of John Hanratty, a railway official. Michael & Margaret both taught at
Loughcutra National school and had six children. The school originally opened by
Lord Gough of Lough Cutra in 1867 was replaced with a new school in 1947 and
Michael retired in 1948. Margaret died on 23 May 1960 aged 70, her son Seamus the
informant. Michael died a widower on 10 Oct 1969 at the Regional Hospital in
Galway and is buried at Shanaglish.

6 Mary Clandillon born 24 Aug 1884 at Lough Cutra. She went to Muckross college
graduated from The Royal University of Ireland in 1906 with honours (2nd class) in
modern literature. She joined the Dominican Convent in Blackrock. Sister Mary died
in 1937 at Blackrock.

8 John Francis Joseph Clandillon born circa born 26 Jul 1888 in Galway living with his
parents in 1901. He died unmarried on 7 Sep 1916 at Lough Cutra.
