NAME Carrickbrennan Lodge/Carrickbrennan House/Carrickbrennan
AREA LOCATION Monkstown Valley/Arundel off Monkstown Road
MAP LOCATION OSI maps of 1838 - 1845 and 1898-1913 place it in the townland of
Monkstown and it is annotated as Carrickbrennan Lodge on both.
GENERAL A late Georgian house built circa 1811 on a square plan. It has
three bays on each façade and is two storeys over a full basement approached by a long
avenue (Clifton Lane) with outer gatehouse shared with Dalguise, it also had an inner
gatelodge. The colonnaded portico led to an outer hallway with tiled floor which in turn led
to a inner hall with tiled floor, marble fireplace which led to the stairway with circular first floor
balcony. The entrance to Carrickbrennan is now off an internal housing estate road in Arundel.
The stable building once in the grounds is now a house called ‘The Coach House’. The shared
brick gatelodge on Monkstown Road is still extant. Carrickbrennan was for for sale in 1974 on
7 acres and had a four bedroom modernised bungalow style house to the rear of the main
house included in the sale. It was for sale in 1987 on 1 acre.
YEAR BUILT circa 1811
VALUATION In 1894 the valuation was 100 pounds and in the 1911 census it is
noted as having 21 rooms occupied by the family.
