Hugh Carlile third and youngest son of Hugh Carlile and Mary Macartney. With his brother
Andrew, he was a merchant trading in timber, potash and Indigo, Swedish iron from their
stores in Merchants Quay, Newry by 1786. He also traded as Carlile and Ogle & Co from the
same stores. He married Sarah Ogle circa 1795. Sarah died 28 Feb 1801 aged 29 at Newry
from consumption. After her death he disposed of his house in the town of Newry.
1 Hugh Carlile son born circa 1796 in Newry, Co Armagh graduated Trinity College Dublin.
He trained under surgeon and anatomist James Macartney. He was of Ashgrove Co
Down and married Sarah Macartney on 15 Oct 1829 at St Mary’s Church, Newry. Sarah
was the fourth daughter of the late Andrew Macartney of Rosebrook, Co Armagh. His
uncle Andrew Carlile died in 1834 and Hugh was his executor. They lived at annavilla on
Newtown Avenue from 1842 to 1843 and were at Rockfield, Dundrum from 1844 to 1846.
He worked at the Park Street School of Medicine and when it closed, he was appointed
Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Queen’s College, Belfast in 1849. They were
living in Rathgar in 1850 and at Prospect Terrace, Belfast from 1851. Sarah died at
Prospect Terrace, Belfast on 26 Jul 1855 from scarlatina and was buried at St Patrick’s
Church, Newry. Hugh died 22 Feb 1860 at Holywood and is buried in Newry.
1 Jane Sarah Carlile born circa 1832 living with her sister Sara in Dalkey in 1911.
2 Hugh Carlile eldest son born 15 Oct 1833 was educated at the Collegiate School,
Belfast leaving in 1851 to enter Queens College, Belfast to study engineering. He
married Elisene Wilhelmine Johanna Bosse circa 1860 and they had at least twelve
children. He was engineer-in-chief of the Imperial railway between Riga and
Dunaburg by 1875 and living at Sassenhof, Riga in 1883. Elisene died on 6 Dec 1908
and was buried at Riga. Hugh died in Switzerland 14 Aug 1911 and was buried with
his wife.
1 Elisene Sarah Wilhelmina Livonia Carlile eldest daughter married Heinrich
Eberhard Berens Von Rautenfeld on 8 Jan 1883 at Sassehhof, Riga.
2 Mary Anna Carlile married Hermann Otto Hilbig on 28 Feb 1888 at St Jacobu
Lutheran Church, Riga.
3 Anna M Carlile married Heinrich B Von Rautenfeld at the Evangelical Lutheran
Church on Vienna on 22 Oct 1880.
4 Willie Pierre John Carlile born 1871 in Riga.
3 Mary Carlile born circa 1835 living in Killiney in 1901 with her sister Jane.
4 Andrew Macartney Carlile second son born circa 1836 died at St Thomas’, West Indies
on 5 Jun 1858.
5 Sara Charlotte born circa 1838 in Dublin living at Dalkey in 1901 and 1911 died
unmarried at Waterloo House, Bray Co Wicklow on 11 Dec 1917.
2 Jane Carlile eldest daughter born circa 1797 married Hugh Boyd of Ashgrove, Co Down on
3 Oct 1825 at St Mary’s Church, Belfast.
1 Hutchenson Boyd born circa 1831 admitted Kings Inns.
3 John Carlile born circa 1799, Collector of HM Customs at Whitehaven died 27 Jan 1840.
1 Meta Frances Jane Carlile, eldest daughter married William Clarence Smith of Belfast
on 12 Oct 1854 at St Bees, Whitehaven. William was the son of the late George
Hamilton Smith.
2 Sarah Martha Carlile second daughter born circa 1837 married Randal William
McDonnell on 5 Jul 1864 in Antrim. Randal was a barrister and the son of Dr John
McDonnell.
Hugh secondly married widow Mary Barrett circa 1805. Mary was the widow of Dr Boyle Moody.
Hugh died at Grafton Street on 19 Jul 1825 late of Newry. Mary died on 24 Mar 1847 at Abbey Yard,
Newry aged 79.
4 Maria Carlile born circa 1806 married Captain Robert Crawford of the 86th Regiment in April
1826 at Newry. She was living at Nassau Street and secondly married Edward Courteney, a
solicitor on 30 Dec 1852. She died on 8 Jan 1886 at Buena Vista, Ballybrack. No issue found
from either marriage.
5 Anna Carlile third daughter born circa 1811 married Edward Greer at St Mary’s Church on
10 Oct 1838. She died a widow on 14 Jan 1892 at Ballygowan, Co Antrim.
6 Fanny Cotton Carlisle youngest daughter born 1813 died a spinster on 18 Mar 1847 at
Abbey Yard, Newry.
