George Carleton married Margaret circa 1745. George was a linen merchant. He died
10 Jan 1799 and Mary died 20 Nov 1813. Both are buried at St Andrew's.
1 John Carleton born circa 1748 was a Dublin Volunteer and a wine merchant of 8
Eustace Street in 1779. He was a merchant of 8 Eustace Street and partner in John
Carleton & Co. He was appointed a high sheriff in 1783. He was an alderman in
1787 and later Treasurer of Dublin Corporation and St Andrew’s Parish. He was
Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1792.
1 John Carleton eldest son born circa 1791 died in Liverpool in 1818.
2 Charles Carleton third son born circa 1799 died in Dominic Street in 1818.
John a widower secondly married Mary Mandle on 26 May 1801 at Westmorland.
They lived at Mountjoy Square and he took a lease on High Park, Drumcondra in
1805. He traded from 12 Eustace Street, Dublin from 1806 where he sold ling, Kent
hops, English sugars and wines. He was insolvent in 1815 and the house and contents
of 6 Mountjoy Square were put up for sale, as was High Park. He left Dublin without
leaving a forwarding adress and they moved to Ambleside on Lake Windermere. He
died at Ambleside, Westmorland on 25 Nov 1820 aged 72. Mary died at Oak Bank,
Ambleside on 11 Sep 1839 aged 62 and left 3k in personal estate. Her son Francis was
one of the executors.
3 Francis Carleton born circa 1800. He was living at Monkstown and married
Sarah North on 3 Mar 1836 at Ambleside, Liverpool. Sarah was the eldest
daughter of Ford North of Ambleside, on Lake Windermer. Francis was a director
of the Dublin Steam Packet Company and was a managing director of the
Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company at 15 Eden Quay from its
incorporation in 1840. Francis died 22 Oct 1848 at Sydenham Hill, Kent and was
buried at St Bartholomew Churchyard, Sydenham. His personal estate of 70k in
England was not administered until 1859 by his son Frederick and daughter Louisa
with their attorney Hector Straith.
1 Frederick William Carleton son and heir born 23 Jan 1837 at Clifton Terrace,
Monkstown. He was in Calcutta, East Indies in 1859. He was a major in the
60th Regiment and married Mary Louisa Campbell on 6 Aug 1867 at Thames
Ditton. Mary was the daughter of Sir Guy Campbell.
2 Francis Carleton infant son died at Edge Hill, Liverpool in November 1839.
3 Louisa Carleton born circa 1838 in Dublin. As only daughter she married
Francis Dobinson at Speldhurst, Tunbridge Wells on 8 Jul 1858. Francis was the
second son of Joseph Dobinson of Egham Lodge, Chertsey, Surrey.
1 Ethel Mary Logan Dobinson born 15 May 1859 died an infant at Egham
Lodge on 8 Jul 1859.
2 Grace Logan Dobinson born 1861 in Surrey.
3 Francis Carleton Logan Dobinson born April 1864 in Surrey.
Sarah secondly married Hector Straith at Barton upon Irwell on 4 Dec 1854. Hector
was a British army officer and the son of Alexander Straith. Sarah died on 4 Apr 1856
and was buried at St Bartholomew’s with her first husband. Hector secondly married
Eliza deButts on 2 Jan 1858. Eliza was the eldest daughter of Joseph Dobinson of
Egham Lodge.
4 Elizabeth Carleton born circa 1806 died at Eustace Street in 1818.
5 Son born at High Park in August 1807.
6 Mary Elizabeth Carleton second daughter married George Croft Vernon of Broomgrove,
Worchester on 19 Apr 1827 at Westmorland. Mary died in 1831.
7 Ellen Susan Carleton youngest daughter married the Rev John Ellison Bates of Christ
Church Oxford at Ambleside Church, Westmorland on 7 Jan 1836. Ellen died in April
1848.
2 George Frederick Carleton born circa 1749. He was living at Eustace Street and married
Elizabeth Cossart on 17 Oct 1799 at St Thomas’ Church, Dublin. Elizabeth died on 20 Nov 1821
aged 71 and is buried at St Andrews. He was an alderman and died on 11 Jan 1831 at Eustace
Street. His executor was his nephew Francis Carleton but his will was left unadministered.
3 Peter Carleton born circa 1750 in Dublin graduated Trinity and took Holy orders. He married
Margaret Griffin of Elphin in February 1784. He was vicar of Coolock in 1799. He was
appointed to Aghadowey in 1808 and resigned as Dean of Killaloe the same year. He was
transferred to Killyleagh, Co Down and retired in 1813. Peter died in 1825 at Killyleagh.
Margaret died at the home of her son at 23 Eustace Street on 13 Nov 1843 aged 77.
1 Margaret Carleton eldest daughter born at Eustace Street in January 1785. She
married William Cossart on 7 Apr 1831 in Dublin. Margaret died at 36 Harcourt Street
on 15 Mar 1869.
2 George Simpson Carleton eldest son born 1786 was of Eustace Street and married
Sophia Lamb in May 1823 at Newcastle Church. Sophia was the daughter of John
Audonin Lamb of East Hill, Newtownmountkennedy. Sophia died 1 Feb 1832 aged 41
and was buried at St Andrews.
1 George Carleton born circa 1827.
George secondly married Mary Williams in April 1834. Mary was the daughter of the
late Thomas Williams of Hampton Lodge, Co Dublin. He was living at Seapoint in 1861
when he administered his uncle George Frederick’s will. He died at Seapoint Terrace
on 1 Sep 1863.
3 Henry Peter Carleton born circa 1787. He married Elizabeth Cossart on 17 May 1826
at St Andrew’s, Dublin. He was a major in the Bengal army and died on 6 Mar 1844 at
Albany Place, Monkstown.
4 Charles William Carleton third son born circa 1789 was a lieutenant and died in August
1835 at Monghe, West Indies.
5 Charlotte Louisa Carleton married James Bailie of Ringdufferin, Co Down at Killyleagh
Church in February 1820. Charlotte died at Ringdufferin on 28 Jul 1826.
6 Elizabeth Carleton born circa 1801 married Samuel Wilson of Killeague House, near
Coleraine. Elizabeth died a widow on the 1 Jun 1874.
7 Frederick A Carleton youngest son born circa 1802 was a major in HM Indian Army.
He died at Sahurunpore, Upper Bengal on 11 Appr 1860.
