Mathew Cardiff of City Quay and Summerville, Booterstown Avenue
1 Matthew parents unknown married Sarah Pitts on 5 Aug 1759. Sarah died in January
1765. Matthew, a ship’s carpenter secondly married the widow Gallagher of Back
Lane in Apr/May 1765. In 1780 he built the Hibernia at his City Quay yard and she
was launched off her stocks into the Liffey at Highwater in November that year. The
Hibernia was the largest ship to have been built in Dublin Port and was purchased by
a company of Liverpool Merchants for 4,500l. In August 1782 Mathew Cardife,
shipwright of City Quay announced that he was taking his nephew into partnership
‘having being bred into the business under his inspection’. Mathew was an eminent
shipwright of George’s Quay in 1783 in partnership with his nephew Michael Kehoe.
His nephew was Michael Kehoe of Wickham House, Dundrum. Mathew died at Sir John
Rogerson’s Quay in December 1802. He residence; Summerville in Booterstown was
put up for sale in 1803 by his executor Michael Kehoe.
2 John Cardiff of Wexford, parents unknow, brother of Matthew.
1 Catherine Cardiff of Wexford married Robert Dempsey in May 1783. Robert was
a merchant of George’s Quay and died before 1795. Catherine’s will of 1795 leaves
everything to her daughter if still alive, and if under 21 to be taken under the sole
guardianship of her grandfather John Cardiff and her granduncle Matthew Cardiff.
