Charles Tisdall born circa 1756 second son of Charles Tisdall of Mount Tisdall (now
Bloomsbury House, Kells, Co Meath) and later of Charlesfort House, Navan. Charles married
Maria Croker on 25 Oct 1783 at St Anne's Church, Dublin. Maria was the daughter of the late
Edward Croker. Charles of Mount Tisdall was a captain in the 3rd Regiment of Horse. He
leased Bellevue in Booterstown Avenue from Countess Brandon in May 1789. On the night he
moved in ‘some villains attempted to enter the house with the intention to rob same. Captain
Tisdall hearing a noise at one of the parlour windows, got out of bed and discharged a pistol
towards the place where he conjectured the robbers were at work’. He wounded one of them
and with the great quantity of blood, it was reasoned that he had killed him. In November
1791 the 'Hon Mr Wingfield and Captain Tisdall ran a steeple chace near Dublin for a bet of 50
guineas. This was won by the latter. A steeple chace is a form of rational amusement
consisting of riding over hedges and ditches as fast as possible towards the nearest steeple
from the place of starting.' Charles, a captain in the 6th Dragoon Guards died 14 Aug 1816 at
his apartments in Sansome Row, Worcester.
1 Charles Tisdall born August 1784 at Molesworth Street. He married Susanna Fitzmaurice
on 3 Apr 1820 at Carlow. Susanna was the fifth daughter of Harmon Fitzmaurice of
Spring Hill in the Queen’s County. Susanna died on the 1 Apr 1823 in London.
1 Charles Edward Tisdall born circa 1821 in Dublin graduated Trinity College and took
Holy Orders. Rev Charles Edward Tisdall married Frances Caroline Barton on
8 Oct 1851 at St George’s Church, Dublin. Frances was the daughter of John Barton
of North Great George’s Street. They were living at Herbert Place, Dublin in 1901.
Charles was Incumbent of St Dolough’s and Chancellor of Christ Church Cathedral.
He died 29 Aug 1905 and Frances died 1 Mar 1914 at 22 Herbert Place, Dublin aged
86. Both are buried at Mount Jerome.
1 Sidney Fitzmaurice Tisdall born circa 1855. She died 28 Jan 1868 as 63 Upper
Gardiner Street.
2 Henry Cusack Wilson Tisdall only son baptised 1 Jan 1862 at St Stephen’s
Church. Henry (RHA) was an unmarried artist living with his parents in 1901.
He married Haidee Maud Brabazon Pilkington on 9 Jun 1927 at St Stephen’s
Church. Haidee was the daughter of Joseph Brabazon Pilkington. Henry was
treasurer of the Royal Hibernian Academy and died 6 Nov 1954 at a Dublin
nursing home. Haidee died 24 Mar 1965 at Pembroke Road aged 97. Both
are buried at Mount Jerome.
Charles secondly married Anne Lodge on 17 Nov 1824 at Caledon church. Anne
was the eldest daughter of Captain Richard Lodge of Caledon, Co Tyrone. Anne
died circa April 1826.
Charles was living at Millmount, near Donnybrook when he thirdly married
Catherine Elizabeth Gordon at Swords on 10 May 1830. Catherine was the
daughter of Major William St Clair of Clairville, Co Dublin and the granddaughter of
Colonel Alexander Gordon of Bellview, Co Fermanagh. Charles died 28 Jul 1834 in
London at the residence of William St Clair, his father in law.
