Conor Maguire born circa 1861 only son of Edward Maguire, AB, Queens College Galway and his
first wife, Bedelia O'Loughlin, descendant of the ancient Princes of Burren. Conor was a medical
doctor and married Florence O'Neill on 8 Sep 1886 at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral. Florence was the
daughter of George O’Neill and Mary McDermott. Florence was an editor of prayer books such
as the Golden Censor and author of many books including ‘The life of St Colette’ for the Catholic
Truth Society. They were living in Claremorris in 1911 and four of their six children had survived.
Conor was one of the first founders of the Gaelic League and a close friend of Dr Douglas Hyde.
He was coroner for South Mayo and District Medical Officer for Claremorris. Conor died on
23 Feb 1944 and Florence died 16 Oct 1944.

2 Conor Alexander Maguire (twin) born 16 Dec 1889 at Houndswood, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo.
He was educated at Clongowes Wood College and UCD. He qualified as a solicitor in 1914
and practised in Claremorris and Ballinrobe, Co Mayo. He was elected chairman of Mayo
County Council in June 1920 and nominated as the Sinn Féin candidate for Mayo
Roscommon in 1921. He married Nora Whelan on 2 Feb 1921 at University Church, Dublin.
Nora was the daughter of Michael Whelan, a director of Drinagh House, Wexford. They
had three sons. He was called to the bar in 1922 and took silk in 1932. He was Judge of
the Supreme Court from 1946 to 1961, President of the High Court, a Judge of the High
Court from 1936 to 1946 and Attorney General of Ireland from March 1932 to November
1932. He was elected to Dáil Éireann as TD for the NUI in 1932 to 1936 and resigned his
Dail seat when he was appointed a High Court judge. He was Chairman of the Irish Red
Cross from 1939 to 1946 and a member of the Council of State until his death. They lived
at Ashurst on the Stillorgan Road from 1939 to 1956. In 1956 the household contents of
Ashurst were put up for auction. Conor retired in 1961 and died 26 Sep 1971 at St
Michael’s Nursing Home, Dun Laoghaire late of St Alban’s, Albany Avenue, Monkstown.
Nora was appointed to Dublin Rheumatism Clinic by the Minister for Health in 1952. She
received no remuneration bar travel expenses.
3 George Charles Maguire (twin) born 16 Dec 1889 at Houndswood, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo.
He was a medical doctor and served as president of the Irish Medical Association and was
a member of the Hospital Commission.
4 Brien Joseph Maguire born 15 Jul 1891 at Houndswood, Ballina, Co Mayo died before 1911.
5 Hugh Maguire born 20 Aug 1892 at Claremorris, Co Mayo. He was a university student and
enlisted. He received a commission with the Connaught Rangers but was attached to the 7th
Inniskillings. Hugh was killed in action on 9 Sep 1916 on the Western Front. He is
remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
6 Gerald Maguire born 20 May 1894 at Claremorris Co Mayo was a solicitor of Claremorris in
1944.
