Dowager Marchioness of Ormonde of Kilkenny Castle & Marley
James Wandesford Butler was born on 15 July 1777. He was the son of John Butler, 17th Earl of
Ormonde and Lady Frances Susan Elizabeth Wandesford. He was educated at Eton College,
Windsor and was MP for Co Kilkenny from 1796 to 1800. He married Grace Louis Staples (born
23 Jan 1779) on 12 Oct 1807 at Ballycastle. Grace was the daughter of Rt Hon John Staples and
Harriet Molesworth of Lissan, Co Meath. James was the 19th Earl of Earl was appointed Knight,
Order of St Patrick (KP) in 1821 and became the first Marquis of Ormonde in 1825. He was militia
Aide-de-Camp to King William, later to Queen Victoria and Lord Lieutenant of Co Kilkenny from
1831 to 1838. James died 18 May 1838 and was buried at St Mary’s Abbey.
Grace moved to Garryricken Castle after his death. In 1857 she put all her furniture up for sale
and moved to Dublin and lived at Marley from 1857 to 1860. Grace died 3 May 1860 at
Drumcondra Castle, Dublin. She was buried at St Mary’s Abbey, Dublin. Her effects, which
included oil paintings and books of music, were put up for sale shortly after her death.
1 John Butler born 24 Aug 1808 was educated at Harrow. He became the 2nd Marquess
of Ormonde after the death of his father in 1838. He married Frances Jane Paget on
19 Sep 1843 in Chelsea, London. Frances was the daughter of Sir Edward Paget and Lady
Harriet Legge. They had at least six children and lived at Kilkenny Castle. John collapsed
on 25 Sep 1854 at the strand near Loftus Hall, Co Wexford while bathing with his family
and teaching the children to swim. His wife pulled him from the water but he was
unconscious and died a few hours later.

2 Lady Harriet Eleanor Wandesford Butler born circa 1811 married Robert Fowler as his
second wife on 16 May 1831 at Kilkenny Cathedral. Robert was the son of Robert Fowler,
Lord Bishop of Ossory, and Hon Louisa Gardiner. Harriett died on 2 Sep 1885 at
Twickenham.

in Dublin.

4 Lord James Wandesford Butler was born on 18 May 1815. He married Lady Rachel
Evelyn Russell on 3 April 1856 in London. Rachel was the daughter of John Russell, 6th
Duke of Bedford and Lady Georgiana Gordon. He gained the rank of captain in the 7th
Regiment and major in the Queen's Westminster Rifle Volunteers. He was Aide-de-
Camp to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland and held the office of State Steward to the Lord-
Lieutenant of Ireland. He was a JP and DL, they had at least four children and lived in
Westminster. James died on 13 Dec 1893 at Dunmore East, Waterford.
5 Lady Anne Wandesford Butler married John Arthur Wynne at Kilkenny Cathedral in April
1838. John was as the eldest son of Owen Wynne and Lady Sarah Cole of Hazelwood, Co
Sligo. John’s father died in 1841 and he succeeded to the Hazelwood estate. Anne took
an active interest in getting to know the families on the estate and set up cottage
industries and schools. She also raised money for tree lined public walkway and a new
cemetery for the town. She died from fever on 27 Nov 1849 and was interred in the family
vault at St John’s, Sligo. John late MP for Sligo died on 19 Jun 1865 at The Palace, Tuam,
Galway and left 18k in personal estate.
1 Sarah Wynne eldest daughter born 24 Jan 1839 at Hazelwood. Sarah was a keen
painter and moved to Edinburgh. She died a spinster at Melville Road from
pneumonia on 26 Dec 1903 and her funeral was held at Edinburgh Cathedral. She
left 11k in personal estate in Ireland.
2 Grace Florence Wynne second daughter born 10 Jan 1842 at Hazelwood died a
spinster at Ballyglass House on 16 Aug 1914 and left 10k in personal estate.
3 Son Wynne (twin) born April 1840 at Hazelwood died same month.
4 Son Wynne (twin) born April 1840 at Hazelwood died same month.
5 Owen Wynne born 5 Feb 1843 at Hazelwood. He married Stella Fanny Gore Booth
on 1 Nov 1870 at Lisadell Church. Stella was the daughter of Sir Robert Gore Booth
of Lisadell, Co Sligo. They lived at Hazelwood, Co Sligo and Owen was a DL for Sligo.
Owen died 21 Nov 1910 at The Royal Hotel, Bakewell in Derbyshire.
6 Son Wynne stillborn on 22 Dec 1844 at Hazelwood.
7 Stillborn daughter Wynne born December 1845 at Hazelwood.
8 James Wynne born November 1847 at Hazelwood died 20 Feb 1848 at Hazelwood.
6 Louisa Grace Wandesford Butler third daughter born circa 1816. She married Thomas
Fortescue on 26 Sep 1840 at Marylebone Church, London. Thomas was an MP of Riversdale
and the son of Lt Col Chichester Fortescue and Martha Angel Hobson. Lady Louisa Grace
was styled as Baroness Clermont of Dromiskin on 11 Feb 1852 and Thomas was Baron
Clermont of Dromiskin. Thomas died in 1887 and was succeeded by his brother. Louisa
died on 8 Nov 1896 at age 80 at Ravensdale Park, Co Louth.
7 Lord Richard Wandesford Butler born circa 1818 died 3 Feb 1838 in Dublin and was buried
at St Mary’s Abbey, Dublin.
8 Lord Edward Charles Wandesford Butler born circa 1820. He died at Marley on 4 Nov 1857
whilst on a visit to his mother. He was supposed to move into Garryricken Castle the following
week but collapsed after breakfast and died a few hours later. He was buried at St Mary’s
Abbey.
9 Lady Mary Charlotte youngest daughter born circa 1823. She died a spinster in October 1840
aged 17 at Southampton.
